  1. I use a Streepilot C320. Model is discontinued from Garmin but should be able to find it retail somewhere. I think all of the C series StreePilots would work for a non techie dad. If you are technical enough you can get the C320, buy a 1GB SD card for $20 or way less, load up the maps for him and be done. The C330 has its maps preloaded. The C340 you mentioned is also preloaded and speaks street names and can add one of those traffic things (it's optional). The higher and thus much pricier units have things like bluetooth for your cell phone and traffic devices built in. I don't know much about the Nuvi line.
  2. Strange. I have a Venture Cx with 2.70 with the stuck screen that really doesn't bother me. But I don't have any reception issues. Works just fine in my house even not near a window. Difference between Vista Cx and Venture Cx somehow? Haven't heard too much about this 2.70 firmware issue in the last couple weeks. I figured everyone went back to 2.60 and was happy.
  3. Either hide the maps like I explained above or do a hard reset of your eTrex Legend. WARNING: A hard reset will erase all maps you uploaded and all waypoints you have. You do this at your own risk. It will NOT delete your basemap. There is no way you can delete the basemap!!! Hard reset: With your eTrex off hold the page key on the right side, push the click stick in AND push the power button all at the same time. Your Legend will power up and say "Do you really want to erase all user data?" If you do then select yes and push the click stick in. Your Legend is now resest. I just did this to mine so it works. If you don't see that question you didn't hold the keys in right. After a reset you should elave your Legend outside with a clear view of the sky for 30 minutes so it can get data from the satellites. When my Legend came around I switched to the map screen and saw a nice lovely outline of the United States. The GPS location was set to the Garmin corporate headquarters in Kansas. Piggletfamily, your unit will probably show you a nice outline of Europe or whatever county your Legend was originally from.
  4. Sounds like to me you might have your unit zoomed in to far to see any map detail. Definately zoom out and see if any of the basemap shows. Or somehow your position is "stuck" somewhere else on the map. In that case a reset should help. You can't delete the basemap on the Legend, or any of the mapping units from Garmin. Loading maps onto a mapping unit simply shows the loaded map rather than the basemap. You didn't specify what map product you are trying to load on your Legend. Now if you loaded a product like BlueChart then you might not see any streets or things. You probably want to use MetroGuide maps I still have my old Legend and I still like it. I have loaded MetroGuide North America 7 maps on it. Whenver I drive out of the coverage I have loaded onto my Legend I simply see "overzoom" instead of "mapsource" on the bottom of the screen. Now the Legend only has 8MB of storage for maps. There is no way to tell you how many maps you can load onto a Legend. MetroGuide NA 7 uses "chunks" for maps. What that means in that where I am in Indiana most of Indianapolis is in 4 map chunks. I can get several more map chunks into my Legend before the 8MB is filled up. I have all of central Indiana, a good portion of southern Indiana and Louisville KY. That's a lot of map for 8MB. There is a way to turn off loaded maps on your Legend. You have to hide/unhide maps loaded onto your Legend on the device itself not in the MapSource viewer. MapSource is only the program that shows maps you can load. It can also tell you what maps are on your Legend and how much space they take up. To hide/unhide a map already loaded on your Legend do this. When you are on the map screen use your click stick to go to the icon to the left of the big X. Push the click stick in, scroll down to Setup Map, push the click stick in. The icons under Map Setup should have the little "i" at the far right already highlighted. Scroll down from there and if you have maps loaded you should see the name of the map chunk, and a little checkbox next to "show". If you uncheck these maps you'll see your basemap when you get out of the menu system. You also mentioned going to Florida. If you are loading Florida maps on your Legend and you are in say, for example, Colorado, you won't see the Florida maps on your Legend unless you manually move your position on the map on your Legend into the areas of Florida you have loaded. When in MapSource if the maps are loaded properly you will see them in a reddish lighlight when you push "recieve from device" in MapSource. I haven't had to reload maps in my old Legend for a while so I cant recall exactly how that looks.
  5. Hi Indiana cachers. Mike in Indianapolis here. Know about geocaching for several years but just never did it much. Did 2 the other day though! Been taking my Venture Cx around with me as I drive around and had already loaded it with 500 caches. Found one in a cemetary I have a relative in and one in a nearby business. Just wanted to stop by and say Hi. I hope to see some of you out there soon.
  6. Garmin Extrex Venture Cx Garmin Extrex Legend Other units not really used in Geocaching: Garmin Streetpilot C320 (main nav system for my car.) Mio C310x (used in a 2nd car or loaned out.) Navman iCN 510 (retired since it has old maps and a nonfunctioning battery.) Used on a laptop: Streets & Trips 2007 with Sirf III GPS DeLorme Street Alas
  7. I am one of those lucky ones. I got a StreetPilot C320 back in November that came with CityNav NT 8 on DVD. The DVD even says it's for the C320. When you install the software you even see C320. Just before the end of April I used the online unlock thing in Mapsource and I was able to install maps on my new Venture Cx. I honestly didn't think Garmin would unlock the software that came with my car nav for my handheld unit especially when C320 is all over the printed software and DVD. And looks like I got in just under the free 2nd unlock code.
  8. Ok, I have a Venture Cx and see this issue. When I select a Geocache as the destination but choose "Off road" so the Venture just "points" to where the cache is I get stuck on the compass page. The Compass page using "Off Road" has buttons for Found, Note and Stop at the bottom. If I choose "Follow Road" it will calculate a route ro the cache. The Compass page does not point to the cache but points to next turn and does not have buttons for Found, Note and Stop. And I can go to other screens. I will hopefully get to cache this weekend and I will see if mine gets stuck on the Compass page when auto routing but when the route is over. I have only had my Venture Cx for a little over 2 weeks and have not cached with it yet. Mine came with 2.60 from the factory. I put 2.70 on it when I read it was available on here yesterday. May also help to note that I have City Navigator NT 8 on my Venture Cx. You didn't indicate if you have any map software loaded on yours. Did your GPSr get "unstuck" by itself when you arrived at the cache coordinates?
  9. Easier way to go paperless with a BlackBerry is to download caches to your GPSr with the name of the waypoint being the GCxxxx name. When what you have in youyr GPS is not enough for you to find the cache go to the wap.geocaching.com site and look up the cache info. You have a perfectly good web browser in your BlackBerry so use it. The wap.geocaching.com site is nice and quick on a BB. The only drawback might be if there is no cell service for your BlackBerry where you are caching. No signal=no web browsing. I was looking into paperless and was going to get a Palm or PocketPC. Then I read here about using the BB for paperless. So this idea isn't mine but I read about it here.
  10. But i am not selling the software. City Navigator software is locked to a unit once it is installed. If you haven't used the 2nd unlock code it can be installed on another compatible unit. I remember reading this not too long ago. http://www8.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.js...phy〈=en
  11. MetroGuide North America will work fine on the old Legend blue. The best part about MetroGuide is that it is not locked so it can be transferred to another GPSr later. I do not think any City Navigator will work on the original Legend blue. Those maps would be way too large anyway even if you used the NT version. I just got a Venture Cx and it is great. Found it new on ebay for 180. Very good price and just about what I paid for the blue Legend over 3 years ago. No need to buy the more expensive Legend or Vista Cx. The Legend Cx is just a Venture Cx that is a different color and comes with the USB cable and a rather worthless 64mb microSD card. I was also lucky that I got the low end StreetPilot C320 that came with City Navigator NT 8 on DVD. I was able to get a second free unlock code for that software and was able to use that on the Venture Cx. The StreetPilots that come preloaded and have no maps on DVD don't get a 2nd unlock code. Now I can start Geocaching soon. Did a few geocaches several years ago, got sick, forgot about this fun activity and now plan to start again.
  12. I meant to bring it up here a while back but I saw this well over a month ago at target.com. Checking the link and it is still the same. Description of the Legend C while showing the picture of the regular Lengend and having the same retail price of the regular Legend. This has been there for a while. I found it when searching Target.com for info on accessories for the Etrex series. I wanted to know if they had some in stores but doesn't seem Target.com lists a lot more than what the brick and mortor stores carry.
  13. Yeah now that I would like to know too. How did you get Best Buy to match Officemax's price? Did you just print off the part of the Officemax website and take it into a Bet Buy retail store? I'd be thrilled if they would do that. I would return my Lengend to Circuit City to get the charge taken off my credit card and take it to Best Buy to get the Vita for the same price as the Legend.
  14. Dang. I just bought a Legend for 169.99 at a local Circuit City store this past weekend. Maybe I should return that since it is still within it's 30 day return period. Circuit City doesn't price match online nor do they carry the Vista.
