  1. I wasn't able to find anything to confirm this or not but:

I have an Axim X5 running Pocket PC 2003 or 2002? I can't tell for sure.

If I were able to upgrade, which I believe is possible according to things I've found on ebay, and purchased a external GPS such as the Pharos 360, should I be able to run the Wherigo application?

  2. I'm not sure you should really bother.

If the thought of caching is not that exciting to you, then I can't see you lasting long anyways.

    Just a thought!

Perhaps you misunderstood me. I am not as excited about the geocaches that have been placed while absent.

Geocaching still interests me a great deal.

  3. You don't want to be a Premium Member for the Premium Member caches. You want to be a Premium Member for the Pocket Queries, caches along a route feature, and bookmarks.

There are a few PM caches that "great" caches or caches release first as a PM cache to give an edge to the PMs on the FTF hunt. But the ability to ask the Groundspeak database to give you information on up to 500 caches (soon to be 1000) by way of a PQ that are of your choice of type, difficulty, terrain to your liking it's what rocks. If you do any road trips the ability to create a route from point A to point B and retrive information on your selected type of caches within your determined distance from your route sure can add fun to the trip and ease in planning a geocaching road trip.

Oh, I most definitely agree. It is definitely a must feature, and as I get back into geocaching a bit more, I plan to use it a great deal.

  4. To say the least, I have been absent from geocaching for the most part for about a year and a half. My premium membership has long since expired, but I'm considering renewing it.

As I look at the caches in my area that have been created in my absence, I don't feel quite the excitement I once did. Sure, there are now an abundance of unfound caches for me to get out and enjoy, which is especially cool for an area that has traditionally had a fairly low density of cache placement. My only problem, is that I considered most of the caches in my area to be of great quality. Many of these newly placed caches aren't living up to my expectations.

Which brings me down to my question. I'm considering placing premium member caches of good quality in the area. Are there others out there that place premium member caches for this reasoning: to have a group of "elite" geocaches? What are your other reasons for doing so?

  5. Our second cache find had been missing for months. We thought we'd take a look on the way back from our first find, because we thought we knew where it was, and guess what? It was back. Same container, same logbook. Strange... The owner moved it to the other side of a valley, closer to our first hide, shortly after.

  6. Great topic. It is these types of Geocaches that keep me in the game. I am rather proud of my relatively low number of finds because many of them took me a better part of the day to hike to.

Since we are sharing favorites here is one of mine: (GCA942) Forget Me Not - WWII Crash Site

And I was gonna do that one last year, unfortunately, I was busy the day a couple friends did it, and never got a chance to head up there.

  7. Steak and Mashed Potatos

This is really just a "luxury meal" that I'll reserve for my first night on the trail. For the steak, when you grill steak at home prior to your trip, freeze a hefty piece along with any sauce in a ziploc bag. On the day of the trip, grab the steak out of the freezer and stuff it in your backpack as you're heading out the door. During the course of the day it will slowly thaw and by the time you reach your camp site it should be at ambient temperature. Fire up the stove and boil about a cup (or two) of water, letting the steak basks in its baggie. When hot, remove the steak from the bag and place on a plate. Use the still-hot water to mix with some instant potatos. Your campin' buddies will be so jealous while they're suffering through their ramen noodles!

I may have to try this is BBQ chicken.

  8. If your team wants to log Premium Member only cache finds, then yes, the team account will need to have a Premium Membership.

    :(

Unless you use the well known "workaround".

(or are you saying the recent site update eliminated that - hmmmmmmmm......)

Ah, the famous "workaround". I wonder...

  9. Ok, so I've waited to post, but I've been following every post made. I think the ODS project is kind of a neat idea.

    Cache Logs

    February 17 by huggy_d1 (3522 found)

Solved the puzzle earlier in the week and just had to come find it. Thanks for the view and the smiles. Found caches like this before, so it was not too unexpected. The puzzle was quite the good one!

The things we'll do to sign a sheet of paper. Good one! Thanks for the cache and view!~~GS!

Looks like they had fun doing this cache...

  10. I don't really have a great answer - but how about this:

Maybe decide how many you need (3 - 1 for each of the 3 teams) as an example) - then post that info in the Garage sale topic here on this site. You never know - someone may have a few used ones they will sell to you for a good price.

At the end of the party - if there are folks who really dug the hunt - ask them if they would like to buy them off ya for what you paid - or better yet - give it to em. What goes around comes around!

Hope that helped and I hope you have a great birthday!

    Nice idea.

  11. I know of a place around here that rents out GPSr's, but I'm not sure about the pricing. A school last year had a science night. They got some sort of group to help out, and they had GPSr's leading groups. I'll try an find out who it was...

  12. Some interesting ideas have been posted here.

People hide caches for many different reasons. I'm at work so I don't have the list I put together of reasons someone might have to hide a cache. People look for caches for different reasons too. A few broad categories seem to be emerging here:

    • I like to find cache that take me to an interesting place. The fact that there is a cache there is not enough by itself to make it worthwhile.
    • I like to find caches that challenge or entertain me. I like to see the creativity of the hiders.
    • I like to find cache that are easy to get to and easy to find. I admit it, I'm just a numbers junkie.
    • I like any cache. I get out and get to use my GPS. If I happen to be going to Wal*Mart to buy socks, its great to be able to find a cache in the parking lot. If I have the whole day to take a hike, I like to find caches along the way.

So the isssue is: if you're not in that last group, how to filter for the hides you like.

    The suggestions are

    • Use existing tools to filter. Existing tools include PQs, maps, bookmark lists, and reading the cache page.
    • Improve existing tools. Ignore all caches placed by a user, searchable bookmark lists.
    • Develop new tools. Ratings, group managed categories or bookmark lists
    • Change your attitude/expectation. Not every cache is going to be hidden per your criteria. Expect to find some lame ones. The good ones will be that much sweeter.
    • Change other people's attitude. Try to convince them to consider your criteria when hiding caches. If you use the forums to do this, expect to be flamed.

One point about developing new tools. Some 3rd party tools can be developed (like GSAK) to help but most of these suggestion require some programming by Geocaching.com and this is a limited resource. I don't think anything will be done unless it gets thuroughly discussed here and some kind of consensus reached. This (along with the pressing issues of improving site performance) is probably why we haven't seen anything yet. Jeremy has indicated that an affinity system of some kind (like NetFlix) might be in the works. He has also mentioned some way to give recognition to exceptional caches or cache hiders.

I think we should add the the develop new tools: searching by attribute.

  13. My main beef with TC is you can rate a cache that you never even visited and are encouraged to do so.
This does seem strange but I think it provides a way to bolster votes on poor caches to keep them out. It is really no different than what peer reviewers do with waymarks because they vote them in or out without visiting them too.

It seems a little different to me. At TC they are voting on the quality. At Waymarking, the group decides if it meets the category guidelines.

  14. Perhaps some sort of group could be formed to help promote quality caches.

This is similar to another idea I've had, but it's independent from a GC.com solution. You could essentially create a group that created a higher standard and caches could be submitted for review and they could essentially earn the seal of approval from the group.

I am sure there would subsequently be a way to make that searchable in GSAK.

If I'm not mistaken, that is the idea of TerraCaching. I was going to try it out, I wasn't really sure about the idea of listing a cache outside of geocaching.com.
