    Åbo-attack 2010

Siltä varalta, ettei joku ole huomannut tätä fi-foorumilta: Ruotsalaisten vierailu Turkuun lähestyy, eli ensi lauantaiaamuna 24.4 saapuu kätköilylähetystö Turun satamaan tavoitteena viettää päivä paikallisten seurassa purkkeja etsien. Mukaan siis ehtii vielä. Klo 13 aikaan on sapuska Linja-autoaseman Hesburgerilla. Amorella saapuu lauantaiaamuna niinkin varhain kuin 7.35 paikallista aikaa. Poistuminen tapahtuu hyvässä järjestyksessä Isabellan mukana klo 21. Lisätietoja eventin sivulta http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...4c-744361601927
  2. Just one wish to the red banner - would it be possible to indicate even approximate time also in UTC?
  3. Uh oh. My brain was still on the cans ...er... thinking about them.
  4. To the nearest grocery store. Over here, one gets 15 cents refund per can
  5. Got to admit, I understood the hint only after solving the puzzle Now, if this just weren't nearly 7000 km away...
  6. Out of curiosity, would the PQ for Saturday (EET), being run on Friday (PST) contain the date of Saturday or Friday? (Currently the PQs begin to run at 10 AM local time, which I've found rather nice ) How about a more complex way, dividing the day into a couple of slices, and then either defaulting the startup time according to longitude, or letting the user to select the slice one would mostly prefer?
  7. That is exactly what it means. Even if your operator would have no coverage, the emergency call should work if there is any technically compatible cell network available. With no coverage whatsoever, also no call will be possible.
  8. Just about 20 finds, I think. Way too little. Should have been 200...
  9. or 999 999 only works in UK, Ireland and Poland. 112 is the pan-European emergency number.
  10. Just remember to dial 112 instead of 911, if you happen to be in Europe
  11. Over here, the main drawback is not coverage, but cost. Coverage is good almost anywhere, except in some wilderness, but data roaming is expensive.
  12. Also, could the server time please be indicated with 24-hour format. Now especially 12AM and 12PM are troublesome to figure out.
  13. Unfortunately the data plan applies to home country only, doesn't work when travelling over a border. Roaming data is more expensive, thus preloading a gpx is worth the trouble.
  14. I would recommend the Google translator, http://translate.google.com/ While the translation is not perfect, it usually is good enough to find the cache. For more complex mystery caches, this may not be the case, though.
  15. I set the GPX format to 1.0.1 and tried on GSAK. Attributes showed up. Very happy now Thanks.
  16. I would not expect this to be fixed in a hurry. There are a lot of issues to solve before that can happen, despite its seemingly simple solution. Too bad. The date format is the major annoyance on the site.
  17. Any news about when we could expect the date format problem to be fixed too?
  18. I have used OSM, and I both agree and disagree. Agree: data on OSM tends to be accurate, down to the trail level. Disagree: when the data is there, it is accurate, but there are vast areas, where only the major roads exist. While OSM (at least as of now) is a good addition, it cannot yet replace Google maps.
  19. Sigh. More snow expected on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday .. apparently no more on Tuesday. Spring needs to wait for a couple of weeks, at least.
  20. University of Turku states that the latitude is nowadays approx 66.5 degrees north, but moving ~15 metres towards north each year. Additionally, nutation causes ~290 metre variation between each side of this average point, within a 18.6 year period. The definition of Arctic circle is 90 degrees minus the ecliptic. How exact numbers do you need, or would it be sufficient to just go to N67 or further, in which case you would certainly be north of the Arctic circle?
  21. Had to check mine Seems to be 14 at the moment.
  22. The Arctic circle is not fixed, but moves slowly. According to Wikipedia, the Arctic circle moves between N65.5° and N67.9° during a period of 41 thousand years. It is currently around N66.56°.
  23. As expected, it is snowing again, and we already got about 50 cm, or 20 inches of snow. Only -10 degrees though, compared to yesterdays -19 degrees. This is how a local road looked like yesterday. Yep, that is ice.
  24. Nope, no spring yet, got another ~10 cm of snow this weekend, temperature -15 degrees now, and more snow expected for Tuesday...
  25. I could add a couple of things, especially if getting into a larger forest or wilderness area: - have a compass, in case the GPRs happens to hit the ground a bit too hard, or you run out of spare batteries (yes, having a spare battery set is also a good idea ) - a paper map of the area to know where not to head. - when heading to a cache, turn back every now and then to see the route where you should be heading back to the vehicle / road / trail head (of course having the location marked in the GPSr ) It is rather embarrassing to have to find the way back while having no idea where to go to. Sometimes it could also be helpful to take photos every now and then of the trail back.
