Carry On Camping Eventer 2005
lordelph replied to House Of Boo's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I'm more coming along for the "craic" rather than adding to my tally, so Wasdale Head sounds great. Would it still make a reasonable base for the numbers folks? With many people driving hundreds of miles to get there, maybe a short drive to cache-dense areas isn't such a big deal? I think I'd be aiming to make a Friday evening arrival, as mapquest reckons it's nearly a six hour drive for me. Is that what most people will be aiming to do? I've got a "pass" from my better half (she hates camping). I also have a bright pink disney castle play tent, so I'm all set :D -
Thanks for the video capture, nice work. I've made up some button badges - the perfect cache prize

Now available! Simply Paul "it's not an anorak" merchandise! This was really for fun, but if anyone is daft enough to buy one, I'll donate the $2-$3 cafepress markup to a charidee of Paul's choosing!
-
Congratulations Simply Paul! And nicely edited by the beeb too. Loved the closing "this is not an anorak, it's a jumper" quote :-)

Carry On Camping Eventer 2005
lordelph replied to House Of Boo's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Both days equally fine with me. I really want to tackle the Quest for the Ring, but if that leaves time for Scafell Pike I'm definitely up for that. I have 4 months to get a "pass" from my better half.... I'll start today! -
As a relative newcomer, it was nice to meet so many fellow cachers who share my love of beer, and my new love of (dare I say it) Bunty? Thanks Peter for bringing it alive with your readings from those hallowed pages! Lots of photos here including a disturbing panorama of distorted faces I look forward to seeing you all again soon.... If anyone has the tb number for the event log, could you email it lordeph at gmail.com ?

How To Get Speed Camera Locs On My Garmin?
lordelph replied to M3ZPY's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Locations of cameras, even mobile ones, is public information (at least it is in Hertfordshire - no doubt you could lodge a FOIA request if you can't find your area) So in effect, we're already pre-warned via the magic of the electric interweb -
I'm a web software developer with experience of large datastores (I manage 15 terabytes of online data, I've learned a few tricks there!). I'd love to contribute to the project in any capacity. The CIA World Factbook says the UK has an area of 241,590 sq km. Lets assume a maximum of 200KB per image+thumbs, that comes to 46GB (assuming one image per square). Not too large really, even if the "average" pictures-per-square is >1. You just need to ensure you have a good backup procedure in place. The idea of a poster is cool though, I'd love to have a crack at writing the software to build that!! Incidentally, check out the new Google Maps beta - it's a nice interface (US only) particular when you scroll the map. It would nice to have a similar interface for browsing the project....

Richard emailed me to ask if I could get the room booked (as I'm sometimes working nearby). I'll not be in London until Thursday so I called them and it's all sorted. Room is booked from 7pm in my name (Paul Dixon) but he'll be happy to open it up for any early arrivals.
-
Yeah, book it possible, if only to give House of Boo somewhere private to read Bunty.

I'm going to close this thread to avoid being "Mr GMail" forever :-) There's now 13,000 invites available at http://isnoop.net/gmailomatic.php - just enter your email address and you'll be sent a GMail invite. This allows you to choose your own whatever@gmail.com address. Smashing.
-
I've sent one to everyone who has requested one so far, but that GMail-o-matic link is a great idea, thanks NickPick. They've got 900+ invites, so get one from there! I've donated a few, but if you find they suddenly run out, feel free to ask me...
-
Did anyone else hear a whooshing sound? No? Just me then...
-
Google must be ramping up the GMail beta, as suddenly I have 50 Gmail invites. Besides being a great web mail client with good anti-spam filters, it's a good place to direct all your caching mail and pocket queries with 1GB of storage. If you want one, let me know, either on the thread or via email (lordelph at gmail dot com)

Ah yes, nothing like a bit of last minute form filling. I had double the fun with having to visit Companies House in London to file a company annual return and visiting the local tax office for my Self Assessment return. "Tax doesn't have to be taxing" - my arse

Anyone Know Any Good Online Games
lordelph replied to The Hokesters's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
A Tale In The Desert is an interesting massively multiplayer roleplaying game. No combat, just exploring, building, learning and cooperating. Just the thing for a geocacher! Popcap is good for quick fun, although I've lost hours playing bookworm.... -
Oooh, October 1973 issue? Hard to come by that one, due to it having the final harrowing installment of "Mary's Lovely Pony". I'll do what I can, but it's likely to be costly. But a connoisseur like yourself doesn't need to ask the price. As for the TB tags, yes, just bring your money to the event.
-
Final tally of stuff I'll bring to the event: 5 x TB tags for simply paul 5 x TB tags for house of boo 3 small cache labels and 2 medium size for globetrotter If there's any last minute requests, choose quickly and leave a message here by 12pm.
-
Congrats on your efforts, I'll take 5 too!
-
The 5-pack from there seems to be the cheapest place to get them in the UK. So far, I'm getting 5 for myself, 5 for House of Boo, and for the time being I'm assume 5 for Simply Paul. The 5 pack works out at £3.37 per TB, so if folks that are coming let me know how many individual TBs they'd like, I'll get the appropriate number of 5-packs and keep any leftovers.

Once you're finished with it, can you fine folks try to send the Event Log Book on it's way doon sooth to the big smoke for the London Event on Feb 10? If gets close to Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire I'll do my best to retrieve it!
-
Yup, here's the TB page for the "Event Log Book" - it's at the NE get-together today - hopefully we can encourage it to travel south over the next few weeks!
-
Alternative mobile gateway that works for me: http://www.rtr.ca/geo - it's got some nice features
-
That room ain't so big, but we should definitely book it. Doesn't cost anything. I'll give Richard a nudge, I don't work near there anymore. Beer!
