  1. Anyone experience trying to upgrade their firm ware? Downloaded the app, followed the directions online, and the upload program won't find the GPS. My computer finds it no problem because when it stops my G drive pops up again which is the explorist. Are there any tricks to get this to work?
  2. Sorry for the double post but forgot to check off email notification. Out of curiosity, is there any correlation to having a poor signal in the mornings compared to the afternoons with Satellite positioning? The problem I am encountering is that while riding with my GPS mounted to my handlebars in the morning I will more than likely drop signal. Whereas, if I ride the same course in the afternoon I never lose signal. Any thoughts why that might be? Where I am riding has heavy tree cover.

  4. I was wondering how many Geocachers ride mountain bikes and bring their GPS along to record where they have been?
  5. You see more water on the Google Map because its assuming its one big lake and not a series of flooded valleys.
  6. I was wondering if anyone could compile waypoints into a gpx file of the perifery of the Cabonga Reservoire in Parc de la Verendrye. I am going up there to go fishing in July and would like to have some coords in my GPS. I have found a few. Thanks
  7. Anyone know why its not happening this month? Or did someone forget to send out an update?
  8. Is anyone using National Geographic TOPO with a GPSMAP60 series successfully? It appears the NG software is the most detailed but I don't see the 60 series listed in the compatibility list. I noticed there is a software upgrade but it doesn't say whether that includes USB support. Thanks in advance. Mark
  9. Thanks for the recommendations. I couldn't wait so I went to GPS City and got a car and home adapter along with the USA Topo. The basemap stinks indeed. I had it on and drove around and it only showed routed roads. Can't wait for the Topo map. Also, downloading and uploading from Geocache.com, I had to get a third party application, EasyGPS.
  10. I just got the GPSMAP60 the other day and I was wondering what accessories do I definitely need to get for it. I was thinking definitely an A/C & D/C Adapter, but for the A/C adapter does it make more sense to go with the PC connector or just use USB? I am good to go on the car mount. Thanks in advance.
  11. I just bought the GPSMAP 60, arrival pending, but I didn't buy any addition software becasue I wanted to get some feedback on what is the best software to get. I want TOPO software with the most detail, contour lines and land features. What's better, the Garmin or DeLorme software (is DeLorme compatible with this GPS unit)? What other software is compatible? I guess the other question is what kind of maps can be uploaded? Is it just the OEM software or will it take others? When uploading a map to the unit, can you edits to the map and upload that information as well? Thanks Mark
  12. Ahhh, yes, the Red Dress Run! Nothing brought me more joy than running around the streets of Tokyo in Red Fishnets and an old red dress belonging to my GF. Those were the days!
  13. Thorin, finding a buddy in this area might be a bit tough. It would be cool though.
  14. Gonzo, I see the implication. If something were wrong with it I really don't see myself driving 600 miles to fix it. Thanks for the insight - I guess this idea won't be happening.
  15. Good point - is there any "ground" rule that says I can't check it but once a year?
  16. Thanks for the quick response. I was thinking of doing one in up there the next time I visit. I go fishing on the Cabonga Reservoir every summer and thought that it might be fun to stash a cache up there. Any rules that I have to pay attention to? I figure I would put it somewhere along the logging road we travel to get to the camp.
  17. Does anyone know whether there is a cache in Parc de la Verendrye?
  18. I started hashing in 1986 in Tokyo. Quite a few Ex-Pats were involved and many natives, too. Never saw a NA hash, though. Was this some sort of religious group? Hashing and Beer drinking are pretty synonomous ... I can't fathom it. It does not compute!
  19. Sorry, I wasn't thinking that Geo Hashing was a family affair. Pardon my ignorance on Geochaching in general - still sort of new at the whole thing.
  20. Did my first Map-only find today. Took MajorMinor for a very bumpy ride in the jogging stroller. It was a cake walk because I know the area and terrain assocation wasn't really needed. None-the-less, it was fun and a great workout. 84 degrees in 70% hummidity! Can't wait to try something more challenging, which there are two, also near my house to try. Probably try one next weekend.
  21. I think this is an immensely bad idea. All we need is for some kids to get out ahead of their parents and find this 6 pack of beer. What if the cops found it? That would go over really well. Geocaching is a family friendly game. Hashing is not. I think the two need to be separate. I'm not saying that as an adult that hashing might not be an interesting idea (though public drunkenness will get you arrested in most cities). I'm just saying that the two need to be kept separate. In addition, this is against the guidelines for the site. The guidelines say: I guess I should have prefaced that this is more of an adult event and the beer cache is reminiscient of hashing today.
  22. Check out this website: The World Hash House Harriers Home Page Contains everything you want to know about hashing. ON! ON!
  23. And don't forget Web-ling. It's easier to find them with a map if there are terrain features to go by. Streams, hills, mountans, cliffs etc... So if you live in Kansas, it will probably be difficult, but if you live in the northeast, or Rocky Mtns, then it will be a lot easier. NE, yes and no, because it depends upon tree density in the forest and visable terrain features. If you can't see the hill top to shoot your azimuth, its going to be hard. Terrain association is your best bet and also, check out the clues and spoilers.
  24. Any Hash House Harriers out there? Has anyone else thought about this? Combine Geo Caching with a Hash? So, here is the plan: Using a GPS, the Hare would leave coords and some clues to find next coords. Do this 3x (chicken) or 5x (Eagle) within a 2 or 4 square mile area. Make it a timed event, which would encourage running. Of course, at every cache, there should be a six pack of beer that the PACK should consume. So, what do you think? For those that don't know what the Hash House Harriers are, in short, its a drinking club with running problem. I know, that doesn't tell you much, so try this on for size:
  25. While I plan on getting a GPS eventually, it will take me some time to figure out which one is the best for all my interests, which now includes Geocaching! Until then, I thought I would put 13 years of military land navigation training to work and use maps instead. Sounds more challenging, anyway. I will keep you posted on my progress.
