  2. quote:Its not clear to me what to do at this point, but I'll keep this on my list of things to try to work out.I'd guess having a noscript block that added a short bit of explanatory text (eg "JavaScript disabled. You know who you are. ") might help. Maybe include a link that, if clicked by the user, will trigger the login check and reurn to the main index? Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk

  6. quote:No I mean the forum rating system. Each topic can have a rating out of five stars. One star probably means that someone rated it 5 stars and then everybody else thought it was less interesting than that and rated it way down... Yeah, I get the impression that one star does mean "less than useful..." Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  7. quote:The link I was referring to is on the forum main page. Here's what it looks like:I get a blank grey box there. No text or link as shown in your screen-grab... Is this one of the bits that needs JavaScript enabled? quote:Let me know if you're still getting logged out.I have switched the cache-check option to "check every time" and now I get through the second (and subsequent) time, which fits with the known pattern. Setting the "once per session" option triggers the behaviour I was seeing. Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  8. Thanks, that's an interesting graph. The really tricky statistic to gather would be the rate at which caches get removed. I checked the Project Ape "Mission 10b - Meridian Snake" on my way to work this morning, and can confirm it's no longer there. That set me to wondering how long caches survive... Purrs... 10. quote:If you or anyone else notices the problem, if you could post the time of day its happening along with your timezone, I can more acurately check the server during those periods to see if perhaps the load is causing this. From my system logs, it seems: March 10 12:03:17 GMT looks like one attempt March 10 22:22:37 GMT looks like another I'm not absolutely certain these were my trying to look at those particular images though. 12. Have a look at the Geocaching Australia board for an Australian view of things, and in the "Getting Started" and "GPS Units and Software" forums on this system for lots of comments on the different models available. They don't vary all that much from one part of the world to another, so the mostly-US-centred discussion is reasonably relevant. As far as features go, it's mostly when folks start talking about maps that the differences between what you can get in the US, Europe and Australia matter. Unfortunately the one thing that does vary hugely is the price you're asked to pay... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  13. Well, if you give the address then there's a chance me might get some folks who don't yet have a GPS coming along, and we can them subvert them... ;> Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  14. quote:The key is the link at the top that says "Hello Lazy Leopard [logout]". If it says that and you're still getting logged out, let me know and I'll keep looking into it.I don't seem to get that even when I am logged in. There's a logout link in the "Post A Reply" page, but not on any of the others, even though I have been able to get into this topic... I made sure to force (shift-click reload) a reload oon the main page after visiting this topic, and that doesn't make it appear either. Next test. Turn off the cache... Purrs... 15. quote:For whatever it's worth, this doesn't seem to work on Netscape 4.7x for Windoze.I'm beginning to suspect there's a cache-preferences issue getting in the way so that, if you've been dumped once, it'll keep looking like you've been dumped until the cache page expires... Something that might help would be a link on the main index page that forced the login check and then returned you to the main index. Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  16. quote:Can you provide some examples that are causing you this problem?Yesterday, the images in this log were giving me trouble. Destination IP was 158.152.11.180. Today, from work, I'm having no trouble looking at them, but the response from geocaching.com is much faster anyway at this time of day... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  17. quote:This is a registered only discussion. You get kicked back out when it verifies you.Ah... So why does it sometimes kick me back even when I'm logged in? Something somewhere is still having hiccups... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk

  21. Often, when I click on the link to get into the list of topics for this section, I get dumped back at the main section index instead. I also notice that in the main index this section doesn't get its most recent topic shown in the box on the right... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  22. quote:CI think it gets real fidgety the closer you get to the 100k limit.Yeah. The images I was having trouble with most recently are reported by the server to be 92kb and 96kb, so under the 100kb limit, just. The trouble with delivering only part of an image is that it encourages folk to re-try, possibly several times. Images are all-or-nothing content. Send it all or don't send it at all. Purrs... 25. When I try to look at the "original" version of images I usually find that I can't download the whole thing. I get something between 30k and 60k (or so) just fine, then the download just stops, and never continues. Any ideas what's happening? It is a problem I'm seeing a lot from geocaching.com, and not from elsewhere. I've tried different browsers, and "wget", and they all suffer the same problem. Purrs...
