  3. It's not possible to come up with an automatic scheme that will satisfy everybody, or even one that'll work in most cases. One thing that can help (e.g. where the cache-owner is an overseas visitor) is for someone local (to the cache) who has found the cache in the past to take the time to re-visit it and report back... 5. quote:My avatar doesn't show upThere was a problem with the mark-up that placed the avatars. It rendered the forums unreadable on some systems. The BBS system's coders are trying to correct the problem, but until they do the avatars won't appear. Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  6. quote:"How hard it is to find the cache once you're within, say, 100 ft."That one's closer to the mark. ClayJar's rating only has one multiple-choice question for rating difficulty, so it's of limited help... Check these discussions: Difficulty Ratings from the General forum (and the old archived portion). Difficulty Ratings from the old (archived) Getting Started forum. Purrs... 10. It depends on what the weather's doing, how much daylight's left, where else I want to go, and so on. Usually I'll at least skim through the logs to see who else has visited the cache. Often I'll read everything. Only if I'm very pressed for time or it's raining and therefore difficult to keep stuff dry will I forego any log reading at all... Purrs... 11. quote:I've always felt that you can't go wrong with a few toys for the young ones. With you on that, and postcards of the local area are also good. Sweets not so good. Nothing likely to sour a find quite like having a small kid throw a tantrum 'cos its mum says it can't have those sweets... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk

  13. quote:Pretty much all photos are spoilers, to one degree or another.I've seen plenty of photos in cache logs and descriptions which were just fun to see. If they happen to show the cache's hiding place then they might be spoilers, especially if the description explains things... An example of a log from a Western Australian cache where the pictures are just for fun, and another, also from WA, where it would be nice if the descriptions could be encrypted. Purrs... 14. quote:1. Out of curiosity - what are the rules of caching in London.I guess this comes down to common sense, mostly, but the one thing that doesn't always seem to occur to some visitors is this: Don't place a physical cache anywhere where it might be mistaken for a terrorist's bomb or it's likely to get blown to pieces if it's spotted. Caches at Paddington and Heathrow caused us a little anxiety recently, even though they were micro-caches. Mind you, folks in the US are starting to discover this too, if the accounts of caches being destroyed explosively over there are anything to go by... Hope you enjoy your visit. Purrs... 20. Yep, GLONASS does look a bit like it's falling apart... Oh well. I figure that if GPS is sufficiently widely used by civilians then switching it off might have too great an impact for it to be sanctioned even by the hawks in the Pentagon. The sort of deal that might be done (between governments?) could involve funding in exchange for promises of availability. I think Europe having its own separate (and therefore quite possibly incompatible) system is probably not worthwhile, but putting European money into the development of the next generation of satellites would probably would be worthwhile Purrs... 21. quote:shouldn't we first split the Uk into seperate sectionsThis came up a while back, in this thread (on the old BB). The problem is agreeing on what constitutes a sensible selection of regions... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  22. quote:Could we have a means for "tagging" a particular photo as a spoiler, say a check box on the "upload photo" page, that would automatically plaster the word Spoiler in red across the image...and encrypt the description too! Sometimes photos get into logs, and the photo by itself wouldn't be a spoiler, but add the description... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
  23. I bought my eTrex Vista in July last year, and used it for a while to log just how dreadful the traffic jams on my route to work were. At some point I updated the firmware, and a couple of new icons appeared. That sent me investigating, and the Project APE cache Meridian Snake was the first cache I found... Purrs... 24. Sounds like politics... The Russians have their own military positioning system. No real harm in Europe having its own too, but I suspect some deal will be done... Purrs... LazyLeopard http://www.lazyleopard.org.uk
