  1. These aren't particularly clever, but there's a chain of stores on the west coast called Storables who carry great waterproof containers of all sizes. www.storables.com
  2. Extra batteries are brilliant! Probably why I didn't think of it <grin>. I'm using a very small backpack by Victronix, not much bigger than a fanny pack. I think I just spelled that wrong... I noticed that most of you carry spare log books - I assume that's for when you find a log book full??? Auntie - you carry a stick, I've been thinking of carrying a walking stick so I don't have to put my hands in dark, dank, holes in tree roots, etc. Thanks everyone, I'm getting some good ideas here!
  3. Thanks that helps. I hadn't thought about first aid supplies! You're in Wisconsin? I grew up there, small world!
  4. I'm slowly figuring out what to keep in my caching bag besides trade items. Like a small flashlight, pen, & compass. Would you share the contents of your bag with me? I'd like to learn from you more experienced cachers rather than get out there and say "I wish I had a ____ with me". Thanks!!
  5. REI is my all-time fav. The quality is great, the staff are helpful, and the selection is usually vast. The print brochures comparing an item by several manufacturers, like one for tents, one for sleeping bags, etc
  6. Oh, it's just the y chromosome that doesn't want to call it small...
  7. I don't know if it's my siggy item, but I have a bunch of chunky froggy stamps. I usually leave another item as well, depends on what's on hand.
  8. Yeah, I hadn't thought of connecting the quality of the cache with the quality of the log. I guess I like reading detailed logs. Mostly online, 'cause as someone wisely said standing in the rain surrounded by poison oak is not conducive to reading! I tend to write less in the cache log than I do online. Comfy chair, dog at my feet, hot cuppa... Thanks for your responses! I've learned so much in these forums.
  9. Might the air freshener be attractive to animals? Just wondering...
  10. Hmmmm, very good points all!! Thanks for your views.
  11. Ok, I guess I'm over-sensitive. Imho geocaching is not a good place for proselytizing, but I've been voted down. Sorry <:-)
  12. Right up front let me say that I don't want to start a flame war here. But is it appropriate to leave religious materials in a cache? I know that the guidelines say a cache shouldn't be political or religious in nature, but what about that stuff as trade items? The reason I'm asking is that I found a bible in a cache and thought it was not appropriate, especially as I don't subscribe to that particular religion, and I don't geocache in the hope of being "saved".
  13. I've noticed on several caches I'm watching that cachers (2 in particular) leave log entries like "Thanks" or "Nice hide". That seems lame to me, but then I'm new at this. I like to hear what they thought of the cache, problems or tips in finding it, and what they took/left. Or am I off-base on this topic???
  14. I know how you feel. I've been active all my life, now I have degenerative disk disease, which means the disks in my spine are falling apart! I have 6 ruptured disks as of now, and it'll only get worse and I'm only 50. I've had to give up so many activities, but I can still geocache as long as the hike is reasonable for me. Hang in there, I'm sending all my positive thoughts your way! I'm in Oregon, not so far from you!
  15. Let me know if you drop a fossil fish in Oregon - I'd LOVE to find that!!!
  16. Have you checked the TBs on e-bay? There's one now that's starting at $4.99 plus $2 shipping - that brings it to more than I can get one from geocaching.com! And the amazing thing is that people are buying them at these inflated prices! One recently went for $8.89 with shipping. I just don't get it...
  17. Is there a place to find info on planning a geocaching event? We'd like to do one next year, but don't know how to go about it.
  18. Elf looked it up and sent me the coordinates. I'm also convinced I need Streets & Trips and a paid membership to Geocaching.com!
  19. Great, I'll keep watching. I wasn't sure if they were available very often.
  20. I'd like to find a used PDA. I've been checking e-bay, but they'e going for more than I can afford.
  21. I'll be travelling to Chicago soon, and was looking for a travel bug hotel near O'Hare but didn't find any. Now I'm looking for caches near my hotel, but I have no idea where the hotel is! I have an address, but no GPS coordinates, even after extensive google searching. Searching geocaching.com for zip code or area code won't help me when I don't know the area. I suspect there's a way to do this, but I'm a newbie! Heeeelp
  22. Yes, we save lives!! Hands on hips, cape flowing in the wind...
  23. He headed onward, but there's no way he could have made it all the way around the lake before dark! Hope I don't stumble over him next time I'm there (Oooh, grim)
  24. I had wondered about the fear one! I thought it looked like someone using binoculars! And no, I didn't think the green ones were radioactive (LOL) but I made the mistake in another forum of using an emoticon I didn't understand and got blasted!
