  1. The year before last we went camping in New Jersey. Unknown to us at the time, the campground we had arranged to camp at was having a large outbreak of deer ticks. The kids ended up covered with ticks (which is how we found out about it), my husband got bit by one (only on for maybe a few hours as we were very careful about checking for them at that point) and I thankfully did not get bit by any. The kids ended up fine, but about a week after we got home my husband's arm developed a red ring. He wanted to ignore it, but I made him go to the Doctor. The doctor took one look at the rash and put him on antibiotics for 3 weeks. The rash was the only symptom he ever had, maybe because we caught it so early. I did have the kids tested a few weeks later just to be sure they hadn't caught it too.
  2. We geocache with our dog Shadow a lot. Most of the caches in the area are out in the woods, so she can normally go with us. She has climbed scree fields as if she were part mountain goat! Not bad for 11 years old. When she sees us pick up our caching bag, she runs for the door. If we aren't taking her with us, one of us has to distract her while the other sneaks the bag out to the car. Edited for spelling
  3. Unfortunately we won't be able to. The Leader of the gangg has to work, and I have a bad head cold. The Pocono Geocachers adopted a highway this year for our CITO and I had really hoped to be there. Of course if the Leader had the day off, we would have been late to the CITO anyway. Saturday if the first day of trout!
  4. Another possible problem is the brand of batteries. We have a Garmin Etrex Vista, and it will not run on Energizer batteries. Don't know why, but everytime we have put Energizers in it, it locks up or works but tells us we're in China!?? It seems to prefer Duracells, and has worked without a problem when we use them. We haven't been brave enough to try any other brands at this point.
  5. I have 4 young children that love geocaching. Sometimes they even find the cache, but they aren't allowed to open it. My one son was only 6 when he found a swiss army knife in a campground we were staying in. The knife was only confiscated when he thought it would be cool to carve the bedposts. So kids can get knives even if they aren't in a cache. Would I place a knife in a cache? Probably not unless it was one out in the state game lands. Do I carry a knife? All the time. I have a swiss army knife that has just about everything you could need on it. I keep it in my purse and the scissors and screwdriver get the most use. The blade is rarely opened. The only time I had a probelm with my knife was when I was in D.C. and forgot about it being in my purse while I was waiting to go into the Washington Monument They were actually very nice about it because I remembered it when I got to the guard and gave it over to him before they found it on their own. They just held it for me until I came back down.
  6. To help the paint adhere better, rough up the plastic with a fine grit sandpaper first. we made a micro out of a plastic perscription pill bottle. We roughed it up with the sandpaper, and then spray painted it. It seems to be holding up well.
  7. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! BBFlatt! After my FIL gave us his Vista, M stumbled onto that page only long enough to delete a letter the first time he played with the GPSr, but could not remeber how he did it for us to change the information. We have read the manual from cover to cover and scoured the boards, but never found anyone who could tell us how to do it. Our Vista now has the correct owners information!
  8. We take our dog Shadow with us when we cache. She hasn't found any caches yet, but loves to go out on the trails. When it's allowed, she is off the leash, but never gets far away from us. She will run ahead some, but if we don't catch up within a few minutes, she comes back to find us with a "Come on what's taking you so long!" look on her face! She loves to cache so much that if we aren't taking her with us, we have to sneak our cache bag out of the house. If she sees us with it, she knows we're going caching and will throw a fit if we don't take her. She's 11 years old now, but still hikes like a trooper! Oh, and she is a mixed breed (looks like border collie and miniture doberman) from the Humane Society.
  9. Where is the option for paying through paypal? We looked at getting some cache labels through the Groundspeak store, but didn't want to pay the $5.66 UPS shipping for a couple of labels. There was no place that we saw to pay via paypal or to get cheaper of free shipping.
  10. My wife and I work well as a team together. She loves hiking, fishing, crabbing, camping, anything outdoors. LOL, only problem with that is sometimes I have to buy 2 of everything. Haven't bought a second GPS yet though. It's hard enough to be first finder without her having one. We just completed a local caching contest. At the one stage the GPSr acted up and I lost all signal. Well, she found that cache without it in less than 10 minutes! When she gets a GPSr I might as well stay in the car.
  11. In August my in-laws came for a visit. While here, my father-in-law asked us if we had ever heard of Geocaching. We hadn't so he told us about it knowing we liked to hike and camp and do other outdoor stuff. Then he told us there were some caches nearby and handed us his Garmin E-trex Vista and said "That's yours now." He had thought about keeping it as a spare when he upgraded to the C60, but thought we would have more fun with it. [] So off we trekked to our first geocache. Only a half-mile walk according to the webpage (Sure it was but the trail climbed over 900 feet in that half-mile! [] ). We have been hooked ever since and are doing our best to catch up to him in number of finds. He is out in Michigan and we are in PA so we don't get to cache together, but we sure watch each other's accounts! Hopefully we will get out there this summer to try some caching in MI.
  12. 31 here! (Well, soon to be 32 ) So I'm only a little out of the 20's (Still in them at heart! ) I have 4 kids (5 if you count the Hubby ) , 2 cats and a dog. We were just introduced to geocaching in August by my Father-in-law who gave us his old Etrex Vista when he upgraded. It's become a great family activity!
  13. I think it is a shame that this event was cancelled. There are so many ways as has been stated to limit size without limiting it just to a demographic area. A simple "Space is limited to X umber of people due to location. Please post if you are attending and how many will be attending with you." Then after the number is reached, just post a note that the limit was met and ask that those who did not post a note, please be considerate and not just show up. It would be a nice way to limit it without hurting feelings. It would still be predominately locals that would show up anyway.
  14. I like the DCFED7. The current one is too light.
  15. We have a Garmin Etrex Vista and have noticed many times where the arrow suddenly swings around and points the opposite direction from where we want to go. So we pretty much ignore the pointer end of it at that point and go by which way makes the distance numbers continue dropping. Any idea why it does that? My Father-in-law gave us his etrex (he had bought a better model) and introduced us to geocaching in Aug. We have found 18 caches since then with only one DNF, and we think that one was muggled.
