  1. "One particular discovery early on in Bridger's career brought him lasting celebrity. To settle a bet in the winter camp of his trapping party of 1824, Bridger set out to find the exact course of the Bear River from the Cache Valley. He returned and reported that it emptied into a vast lake of salt water. The men were convinced he had found an arm of the Pacific Ocean. In reality, he was the first whiteman to view The Great Salt Lake." As a young boy I would take my brass compass and my .50 cent topo map and spend untold hours in the "wilderness" of northwestern Connecticut. Some 50 years later my wife asked me if I would like a GPSr for Christmas. I thought that would be a neat toy to play with. This was before I knew about this affliction/addiction/ sport of geocaching. She never did get one as there are so many to choose from, but did tell me she had set aside $300 for it. I found this site and read as much as I could understand, it was a short read to say the least. So I picked the 60CSx, and many of you agree that I "done good." So here I sit with 2 caches and numerous benchmarks hanging from my "lodgepole" and still not knowing exactly how to make the darn thing do all that it's supposed to. After pulling out both my hairs I hired a young tech-type feller to show me what I needed to know about getting the PC and GPSr to work and play well together. Not only do I (Jim Bridger) need to learn a new technology, but also a new "language!" We loaded MapSource as I found out that I need that for communication between the two. Is MapSource also called an interface? Now, I told you ALL of this to ask, what is next as far as downloads? I like topo maps, should that be next? I live in a VERY rural area, do I need city maps? Will the waypoints and caches show up on the topo maps? Please make this as simple as you can.........don't forget.......it's 1824!
  2. Thanks a lot NordicMan! Just spit my coffee all over my invoices! That was great! Even I can run that one!
  3. Sounds like a good time to double up on pastimes. When I lived back east I liked hiking, backpacking, and snow shoeing. Seems like a body could snow shoe to a cache. (snowshoe, snow shoe ? hmmmm.....? Cross country ski maybe? Where I live now, what little snow we get is gone by noon.
  4. This place just got a lot more comfy with gun folks close by!
  5. Sorry sir, guess I lost my head there for a minute.
  6. Ladies ang gentlemen how irresponsible can you be? Surely, you're not suggesting that the "gubmint" turn loose a bunch of whackos with little electronic whizos running about the country trying to save money? Tsk...tsk... have you not thought of the ever present CARBON FOOTPRINT we would leave? What would AL say? What would Greenpeace say?
  7. E3Chief, First let me thank you for your service to our country. The E-3 is a grand old lady and you must be very proud of her. I like talking to aircrews, having crewed a UH-1 Huey many years ago in a galaxy far, far, away. I am on board with your idea and feel free to contact me anytime if I can be of any assistance. Semper Fi and a big oo-Rah! (or whatever you Air Force-types say! )
  8. Team Cotati, I don't have a clue what that is! Think of yourself trying to have an intelligent conversation with Davy Crockett! I just got a 60CSx last Tuesday. I'm 62 and trying to catch up with you young folks. It's frustrating to say the least!
  9. DNF is all samey-same as DNF in NASCAR= Did Not Finish Capisce?
  10. Being an old veteran geocacher of 3 days now, I was on my 2nd find yesterday. I was standing there, logging in, when when a giant police officer walked up and asked me what I was doing. "geocaching, sir."I replied. "huh?" says he. There I briefly explained this whacky sport and he was truly amazed. I told him there are many families that play the game and really enjoy it. I wrote down the website for him and he thanked me and walked off. So maybe we have another one of the boys in blue on our side. I have no feelins of guilt or self conciousness, heck, I'm just an old codger out having a little fun.
  11. As a collector of compasses, I find the electronic compass amusing at best. Do I own one? Sure, they are a part of my collection, and they are stand alone units. There's one in my 60CSx. I seldom if ever go for a "stomp" in the boonies without my Brunton Pro or Cammenga Tritium Lensatic. High dollar? You bet! How often do you buy a compass unless you're a nut case like me? Sure you can buy a military-type compass that looks like a Cammenga for about $18.00. Bet you're life on it?
  12. I hand load my ammo. On a rare instance I could see unburnt powder in old or impropery stored shells.
  13. I feel sorry for the poor city dwellers with no vehicles. Imagine renting a car or riding a subway to get out in the country just a little way.
  14. This pastime started out with me buying a metal detector for my bride for her birthday. How I wound up here I can't remember, but here I am! Just got my GPSr yesterday and I'm fixin' to pull out BOTH my hairs try to figure the dad-gum contraption out!
  15. Surely there must be a more imaginative container. Lipstick case? We gun folks get enough negative publicity, present administration included.
  16. Looks like it to me. Let us know how you made out.
  17. It's a general decline in our morals. What kind of a person would vandalize a church?
  18. Thanks JB, POI? ........YUK! I was stationed in Hawaii years ago..that stuff tastes terrible! Just joshin' 'ya. POI= Points of Interest. See? I know some stuff.
  19. Inferno, When I was caving, years ago, we used to wear a small pack on our hips, something like a gas mask bag. They were made by a company called Lost Creek. You might want to check them out.
  20. Thanks again everyone. hukilaulau, Was jawin' with Yoda over a cold one after work last evening. He assured me that my Concealed Weapons Permit is valid for derringers, revolvers, autos, AND Light Sabres! My unit came with a 64 MB disk but I do have a 2GB (that's a high capacity magazine in my world) should I bother with it or just go ahead and install the 2GB?
  21. Thanks Larry, It's good to know I have a go-to guy with the same GPSr. Right now I'm taking it one page at a time and have not downloaded anything to the unit although it did come with a disc called MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager, what ever the heck that is or does!
  22. Finally, after waiting 12 days for my order to arrive after travelling a whopping 90 miles. I am now the proud and happy Dad of a 60CSx. I went through the quick start up guide and headed out to my first cache. Wonder of wonders.......I found it!........a micro at that! As I leaf through the owner's manual it becomes a little overpowering, and I wonder if I bought too much machine, especially for an un-tech 'ole geezer like me. I did manage, however, the initialization, calibrating the compass and altimeter. I'm sure there will be many questions forthcoming and thank you all with the advice so far.
  23. I don't get that at all. I plunked my money down and was out the door in micro-seconds!....'course I never use Pay Pal being an NRA member.
  24. Roddy, I had to communicate via e-mail as there is no phone number and there were no explanations given. You just have to keep going back to "Track My Package." Oh yeah......I ride an FLHR Road King.
