  1. The issue certainly isn't bright sun. Turn it the right way, and it's brighter than any backlight you've ever seen. The problem is in half-light (you know, under those pine trees looking for tree hides) where you don't have the advantage of the sun, but the ambient is enough to make the backlight less effective. We've got quite a lot of photons out here in Colorado, too! +1. I just bought mine this week.. I got a heck of a deal on a lightly used 450t with road maps for 200. Couldn't pass it up. I used it in the strong light a couple of times and have had no problem. Definitely better than my droid in the bright light.
  2. The black coating is worn off of them around the edges. Honestly they have been that way since a couple weeks after I bought it. Doesn't affect the function at at. I suppose they could be "touched up" with black paint it you wanted to. I will try and take a pic and upload it here. Thanks, Brian
  3. Lightly used, the in/out button is a little worn, but other than that it is in great working shape. Just upgraded to a Garmin 450T and need to sell it.
  4. Hey. THat's my cache!!! (adopted) Cool!! to see it posted here.
  5. I ordered from j&r on sat for 239.99. Saw this am for 199.99 at amazon (direct). Called jr and they met the price. Needless to say I saw very happy. They also did the same for 2 buddies of mine who also ordered from them on sat. At least one of the sites I checked implies (but does not state) that T8 is included. Says it includes "full US street, road and terrain detail" -- which I assume means T8. http://www.amazon.com/PN-30-GPS- Navionics-...361&sr=8-12://http://www.amazon.com/PN-30-GPS- ...361&sr=8-12 But better to call the vendor to check to be sure. BTW, Amazon is currently quoting $199.99 for a PN-40. Of course, it IS Amazon, so YMMV. We don't all see the same prices...
  6. I just picked up the PN-40 on amazon for 239.99. So far it's the best deal out there on it even better than the best BF ads that are up. Bass Pro cannot touch it with there 300 w/ rebates. I would jump on it if you are considering this unit.
  7. I would buy the 239.99 version on amazon right now!!! It's an unbeatable deal. Just picked mine up a few minutes ago.
  8. Thanks for the wiki links. I have been and still am shopping for a unit. That is a very informative set of pages about the pn-40.
  9. I am new myself, but i use a blackberry and am completely paperless. This just means that have NO printed papers that i take with me containing my coordinates, hints, or previous logs. All that info is downloaded to my BB either through a "pocket cache" at my house when i am planning my trip. Or.. on the fly from the website via my BB data plan to cacheberry (my program that manages my waypoints) Although this is paperless, for a trip with many caches, i usually print out the first page for each on geocaching.com and use these to organize a route. I haven't figure out yet how to do this easily on my BB.
  10. I am looking at the pN-40 to upgrade from my blackberry. I have a couple of questions. Can you log/make field notes on it? What about multistage caches. How do you enter the addl. waypoints? How are the street maps on it? This will be mainly for caching, but i need some urban support for getting to the cache area on this in the suburbs.
  11. I have been using cacheberry for about a month and a half. Found about 80 caches with it. I just bought the full version of it this weekend. I was on the way for a hunt and found out my trial had run out. There are some really good things that i like about it. One thing i don't like is looking up a cache on the run.... which is where geocachenavigator come in. It has a feature to "find caches near me". This is very useful if you are out of town and want to find a quick cache, but don't have the GPX file downloaded. Both of the programs have pros and cons. I would download and try them both out before you buy either. ... or both.
  12. Ok. Let me first say that i am completely new to geocaching. I have been doing it about a month and a half. I am currently using my blackberry curve as my GPS, which as a GPS i think works good.. when it works. I use cacheberry to manage my waypoints, which i download as pocket caches from the website. I take a photo of all the caches that i find using the camera on my BB. I like having google maps on the BB b/c cacheberry only has a compass, but has google maps integrated to be able to switch over to a map view when i need to know what road to turn on in urban situations. Have said all that. There is a lot going on when trying to do all this on my blackberry. And switching between application get to be kind of slow and many time it bogs down the processing power of my BB. I want to get a "real" GPSr and have been looking for a short time. I want to be able to retain the paperless aspect of it, but need something with more than a minimal compass. I dont have to have a camera, although it would be nice, those seem to be a little out of my price range < $300. \ Are there any suggestions/ experiences ?. If there is something that also have POI on it for use on road/urban applications i would be interested in that as well. Although, this will be 90% a geocaching unit. Any input is welcomed.
