I have downloaded several pocket queries to my Garmin Oregan 550 but the geocaches don't show up when I look for them. When plugged into computer the pocket queries are their so know they have downloaded. Have I missed something obvious.
Are they more than 50 km from where you are? If so they won't show unless you sort by name.

I have a watch on a TB. It was my first TB find so I have an interest in its progress. Unfortunately, its number has found its way onto one of those lists and it gets quite a few 'discovered it' logs from (invariably German) loggers despite it being in Australia. The owner deletes those logs.
My question(s) is:

- Does a deletion take away from the armchair logger's tally?
- Is the armchair logger notified?

Hi!
I discovered geocaching this summer. Enjoying it, I decided to purchase a travel bug in October. I placed it near my home and waited. 2 days later, another member acquired my travel bug and mentioned it would be traveling from VA to Mississippi. I waited. It wasn't moved but I thought maybe the user would place it over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Before the holiday, I emailed. They didn't respond. During the holiday, I emailed again and they did not respond. I just emailed again. They were very active at the time of finding my TB, but not since late October now.
I'm very disappointed because it was my first travel bug and it literally made it nowhere. Any advice? How long should I wait before I mark it as lost?
Don't despair it may show up eventually. One of my travel bugs got picked up be a novice cacher in Australia. The cacher then went off the air completely. I had written it off and then, 10 months later, it shows up in the UK! And not even in a cache -- some cachers, looking for a new cache site found it hanging on a fence post.

I live in the corner of a state (Pennsylvania). I can be at a new cache or event in West Virginia or Ohio within 45 minutes, or in Maryland within 90 minutes, or in western New York within two hours. As such, I had little use for a list of the newest caches in Pennsylvania since at least half of the events are in Harrisburg, Philadelphia, York, Lancaster, Scranton, etc. -- a half day's drive. For me it's always been more useful to click on the link in that same "search options" box to "Search for Geocaches Near Your Home Location." If I'm wanting to hunt for a cache I will click on the "Filter Out Finds" version of the link. If I'm looking for upcoming events I would sort the results by clicking on the "Placed" column so that the events bubble up to the top of the list.
I recognize that sorting on columns is a premium member feature, but this method ought to work for those of you who are premium members. It's two mouseclicks from your profile page instead of one.
I'm in the "bring it back" camp.
I'm a Kiwi who lives at the bottom of North Island, NZ. For me the "search newest" gave me North Island caches. I have no use for for other "States" as the only way to get to South Island caches is a ferry trip or flying. They may be physically closer (or even further north) than some new North Island caches but are not readily obtainable.
What was once a one-click step is now five clicks, (discounting all the scrolling to get to my nation).
If you want to clear up that area of the profile page. Get rid of the "Nearest benchmark" as it doesn't work for NZ survey markers, and (I suspect) anywhere other than the US?

my name is Mattea (M@tea on geocaching.com) I'm original from Germany and I'm pretty new to Geocaching, but in just a few weeks I became really passionate about it. And because I'm here for one year to do my Bachelor degree in Communication Design I thought that Geocaching is the perfect topic for my final project. So I came up with the idea of creating a series of books dealing with Geocaching in different countries. They should be Trackables and travel from cache to cache, so be in the possession of a cacher for some time to read it, before continuing its journey.
I will design the edition for New Zealand and for this I'm after some nice, adventurous, exciting Geocaching stories in New Zealand. What have you experienced being out geocaching in this amazing country?

What are your favorite caches / routes / spots?
Any remarkable Mystery Caches?
What is special about Geocaching in NZ?
I would be very happy if some of you are willing to help me with this project and happy about any sort of contribution, whether complete formulated stories or smaller input.

What is special about NZ geocaching? One thing, from what I've seen, that seems unique to NZ is an unwritten convention to name the town the cache is placed in so you will have, for example, "Some Cache (Wellington)" or "Another Cache (Auckland)"
NZ only has two "states" North Island and South Island (and Chatham Island too I think) so NZ cachers have subdivided those states by a naming convention.

I am saving for a nice, new GPS, but being a single mom of 4 kids, it's a little slow. In the mean time I've been using my phone. However, I got my step father to lend me his gps for a little while. He doesn't geocache, so it's not like he needs it LOL. Anyway, I am trying to figure this thing out and I know somehow I can manually enter a waypoint, but I can't figure out how to get it to even be a little bit paperless. Is it possible or is it too old? Garmin refered to mapsource as "legacy" which to me means, old, outdated, and unsupported.

I've got a Venture HC and it's a good accurate machine. As others have pointed out it is not paperless. You can, however, load the hint onto it if you use GSAK to load your caches.
I've recently acquired a iPhone 4s and while I think it sucks as a geocaching device (using the free geocaching Intro app) I've taken to using it to read the web page if I get stuck with the Venture.

Use %code for Name if you want the GC code. You can also check the help pages for GSAK. Generally, you'll get much faster response if you ask on the GSAK forums.
I'll second the help pages within GSAK (although they are not intuitive unless you are used to it).
If you have the Send to GPS dialogue box open, click on the Help button. This will bring up a help screen with a screen shot of the dialogue box and if you click on the part of the screen shot you are interested in, it will open another help screen (it took me a while to work this out).
So if you click on the "Waypoint name" part of the screen shot it will open a page on "waypoint name". From there click on "special tags" which will provide you with a heap of different outputs for that field.
I have a Venture HC too and I use "%drop2%smart". This sends the GC code minus the "GC" (redundant) and then appends the Smart Name. I believe this is the best option for the limited capacity of the Venture. (I use "%hint" in the Waypoint Description field).

For example the Australian postcode for Cobar,a town in New South Wales is 2835.
When I enter the code into the search I get caches in Hungary.
If I use a prefix "AU-" I get French ones, if I use "AUS-" I get Namibian ones, & if I use "Australia" I get caches in Antarctica"

I must humbly apologise for trying to help. I must have missed the part in your original query where you said you knew all about PQs and that you were specifically (and only) asking about post code searching using the basic search form.

I have the latest plug-in from Garmin but can't send a single file to my GPS60C unless I use my Mac. I tried Chrome, Firefox, IE11. I have windows 8.1. Put IE into compatibility view at geocaching.com and still no luck. Firefox always screws up my computer so deleted after it didn't work also. Pain to use my Mac laptop. Just want it to work on my desktop. Any help?

My error says I need the Garmin plug-in, goes to the Garmin site and there it says I HAVE the latest plug-in and recognizes my 60C.
Are you trying to send from a Map or the Cache's page? If the former there is a recently introduced bug of which there are a number of threads on the bug forum.

There is a cache I am working on that says to "calculate the checksum of a year"--1984 for example. Does this just mean add all four numbers together? Coming from a technology background, I would not use checksum to describe the act of summing all of the numbers. The difficulty is 2--what is checksum then?

I believe the cache owner is asking you to add the digits of the year together. The better question would have been "The sum of the digits of the year".
So 1984 would be 22. Mind you, for most puzzle cache questions, the answer should be a single digit number as it will be part of the missing digits for the GZ coordinates. Does a 2 digit number make sense for your solution?
Checksum is sometimes used as a check of the sum of all of the numbers required for the solution of the puzzle as an alternative to a Geocheck link.

And I suppose this was due to the iPhone and had nothing to do with the accuracy of the posted coords? What did the map say?
I've got a garmin 60CSx and a 62S. Trust me. My iPhone is just as accurate, and sometimes more. You just need to learn how to use your device.

My eTrex Venture HC had led me bang onto the physical GZ while the map on my iPhone was showing me that I was standing in the middle of the road. (The actual location of the cache on the iPhone map probably wasn't too far off).

On my iPhone (ios 7) if there is a file opened in a particular app which can also be used in another app you should have an icon that looks like a box with an arrow coming out the top. Tapping that will give you a menu that will allow the other app to open the file. maybe that will work on the iPod?
Thanks! Unfortunately, this does not work for me: the box with arrow button when in Safari always suggests mail, twitter, and facebook. The list does not depend on the current URL.
Do you see Geo App on your iphone?I would gladly switch to another way. In fact, bookmarking the target caches was the first thing I tried. I was very surprised to see that Geo App does not see my bookmarks. Then, I tried the convoluted email route, and it worked (then). So, bookmark -> PQ -> saved list idea sounds great. But, how do I make a PQ out of bookmark list?

From your geocaching.com home page click on "Lists"
You should see a list of your Bookmarks. Click on "Create Pocket Query" for the bookmark list in question.
I understand that from there (when you have internet connection on your iThing) you can then download the PQ.
I can't test that as I only have the "intro" app on my iPhone.

Here's my usual hike preparation procedure.
- Using geocaching.com on my computer, find caches around the route.
- Download cache coordinates into my GPSr.
- For each cache, click on the cache id and copy/paste the link there into an email.
- Send the email to myself.
- Open the email on my Ipod.
- Click on each link there.
- The link opens in geocaching app.
- Save the cache that opens in an offline list.
Then, I can get all the information I need on the trail from the saved list, maps, images and all. Great feature!
It works fine on my old, now broken Ipod Touch of generation 4, but not on my new shiny generation 5 Ipod. The problem: on step 7, the link opens in Safari!

If the GC website can't do it you can probably do it in GSAK.
As other have pointed out, the easiest solution is to create a bookmark list and then click on the caches on the map that you are interested in. Once you have all the caches you are interested in, you can convert that to a PQ and then load the PQ into you GPS.
But that can be a bit tedious. A more sophisticated technique is to load the general area into a GSAK database and run the Google_Maps macro. This will show all the caches in the database in Google maps.
You can then draw a polygon around all the caches you are interested in and then send all those caches to a Filter query in GSAK. GSAK can then upload to your GPS

Amazon Amazon won't ship but some of their sub vendors will ship to NZ (and presumably Oz).
I purchased my eTrex Venture (through Amazon) from "JM Prime" in 2009. You may have to shop around to find a vendor that will ship out of the USA. (It looks like JM Prime won't ship outside of the US now).
Why do you want to buy from the States anyway (price?).
I've just tried Amazon UK for a 600 and they have let me proceed through checkout to a NZ address.
Price 290 quid versus $US 470.

You could ask your friend to download and then send you their "My Finds" PQ.
Last I checked, sharing any downloaded PQ is a direct violation of the website TOU.
I agree in principle that sending a PQ to a non-Premium member is naughty but I can't see the harm between premium members.
Perhaps I should have said to get the friend to send a non-information loaded version of their My Finds PQ such as a KMZ file?

Is it possible to see a map of caches found by one of your registered friends? That is see the smiley icons of caches they have collected.
You could ask your friend to download and then send you their "My Finds" PQ.
You could then load that into any number of mapping programs, Google Earth for instance.

Isn't there a GSAK macro that prints cache pages? Any GSAK experts out there who can confirm?
GSAK can print lists exactly as the OP asks. But due to the part about "avoid laborious", I resisted suggesting GSAK. I've worked on GSAK off & on for years, and have never reached a point where I can use it. It took me 2 weeks of research & programming just to set my "location"

GSAK is not that hard (IMO).
My GPS (etrex Venture HC) is not "paperless" so if I'm going on a trip I'll either create a PQ or if I'm wanting to be a bit more specific, I'll create a Bookmark list, choose the specific caches I'm interested in and then turn that into a PQ.
Either way, once I have the PQ, I'll download it into GSAK as a separate database. I can then 'print' the list of caches. The print dialog box enables you to make a few choices such as show last 5 logs; decode hint etc. It also enables you to preview the printout in your browser.
If you have a portable device that can read PDF files you can 'print' to PDF.
You can also load the caches directly from GSAK into your GPS. You can adjust the standard settings on what is loaded into the GPS. For instance, loading the hint into the Venture's description field.
The latest version of GSAK also uses the Geocaching.com API so you can update an existing PQ directly without have to re-run and download from the geocaching website.

I just put it out there but agree there must be a better way. As the last post says on frequent trips it is nice to have a new one to find without getting of some of the toll Interstates.
Must disagree here. If a cache is replaced at a rest stop (or anywhere for that matter) at a regular intervals just so people can find it again, that's just number crunching.
If it is a nice spot just stop anyway. Get out and stretch your legs. See if the cache is in the same spot you left it last time. Have a look at the log book for interesting comments. Pick up or drop off a trackable.

As others have pointed out these old devices don't appear as a drive but software such as MapSource; BaseCamp; GSAK; etc should be able to write to the device.
I connected my Venture this evening for the first time and, shock, horror, I get a pop-up message saying something along the lines of "grmusb.sys - Windows has blocked a digitally unsigned driver" Both MapSource and GSAK fail to find the device.
Further investigation needed. Good job I spotted this thread, I hope to use my trusty old Venture in a week or two.
Problem solved.
Downloaded the latest Garmin USB driver and everything is sweet. You do need to reboot the PC for the drivers to install properly.
Hopefully this will solve the OP's dilemma too.
