What is a "California Style" cache?
two bison replied to boostamper's topic in General geocaching topics
In California we used to call that a "Hollywood Stop" and, In Hollywood, they call it "Stopping." -
As the personalization on the original maps is not working, I went as suggested, to the Beta Maps. I was linking from the new cache GC2TN6F. This cache does not show on the Beta Maps. How can we use it if it doesn't show all the caches that are published? I'm sure you are working to fix the original maps. With both systems broken ... I prefer the original maps to the beta version but I'd be happy if at least one of them was working correctly.

Note to lackeys: Thanks for getting the maps back up and running. -

Note to Lackey: If the maps are not personalized then the site is not functioning. Slow with personalized maps is better than fast without. -
Mention: If you forget to drop a travel bug or geocoin with your "Found it," don't log a "Found it" the second time ... use "Write Note."

I just noticed that the beta maps do not show premium member caches. That means they are not showing the caches I, as a premium member, found last evening.
-
Checkmark "Enable Personalization" Thanks but I had done that before without effect. This time it worked ... partially. Most of the caches I found last evening are not showing either as found by me or not found. They simply aren't there. On the original maps they show just fine. I'm not sure I understand what the whole excitement is about. Having betas only work, for me, less than half the time make them not worth the effort. In addition there are fewer cache types showing ... a traditional isn't the same as a letterbox (letterboxes are, for the most part, poorly written), for example, and an unknown is certainly not the same as those oh-I'm-so-special-because-I-can-do-whereigos. In fact, as I think about it, letterboxes and whereigos should be grouped together as they are essentially the same.

The new beta maps do not have the icons as indicated by the key. The icons look just like the icons on the regular old Google maps. They are not showing "my finds."

The original maps are now showing "my finds" again. How do we get the Beta Mapping to do that? -

Same problem just appeared for me. They were working a few minutes ago and then ... nothing ... that is, no "found" no "placed" just caches. Original maps now okay but not the beta. -

Where do you find Thanks Log a find. The next window that opens is a view of that log. You'll find them there. -

There are a couple of maintenance attributes on the info column in the search results for 2 of my caches and there is no need for maintenance acording to the logs so how I do I get rid of them? Post an "Owner Maintenance" log on the cache after taking care of any issues. Around here, it's very common for a seeker to post a NM, the owner to post a Temp Disable, replace the cache and post an Enable, never realizing that there is still a NM on their cache. The cache can go for years with that cross icon. Perhaps a method can be enacted to clear the attribute after an owner enables thier cache. A check box type of system, "do you wish to clear the Needs Maintenance Attribute"? Just thinking. That's a very good idea. -

What if the site mocked you instead: "Slacker! STILL 4 more caches to go..." Yea we can probably remove that... As a slacker it sounds good to me. Thanks. And, to the Firefox defender ... was it Don J.? We who don't happen to think Firefox is the greatest thing since sliced bread shouldn't have to deal with being sniped at just because we don't want to change. -

Thanks for reducing the size of the favorites information box on the “View Geocache Log” when logging finds. Also, thanks for moving it lower on the page. Another improvement would be to remove the really lame cheerleading: Keep it up. Find 6 more geocache(s) to earn a Favorite Point! Halfway there. Find 5 more geocaches to earn a Favorite Point! So close. Find 4 more geocaches to earn a Favorite Point! and so on … It is hard to imagine there is a geocacher out there who is going to go caching just so they can earn another “Favorite Point.” -
I found a cache, but my pen isn't working ... :)

I just love it when folks log one of my caches by saying, "The log was soaked so we replaced it for you. Thanks for the cache." -

Problem, for me, just started about 3 minutes ago in the middle of logging. An Error Has Occurred Your request has resulted in an error. Please return to this site's home page to continue. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I returned to the home page and tried again without success. I guess I'll go watch TV and wait for the nice people in Seattle to fix it. -

i do not have this issue... My owned caches do show on the new beta map. I have this issue. The cache owned by me is shown but I think the OP meant that the icon is not different from any other cache. I'm guessing that will come later along with smilies for found by me caches. -

Only the distance is displayed for users viewing your stats, not the GC ID. I'm happy to see this change and then new line on the my stats indicating the fact the the GC ID is not shown for nearest find. Thank you. -

Now that souvi's are out what is your final opinion.
two bison replied to Coldgears's topic in General geocaching topics
Since 3 of the 5 State souvenirs we've received are "wrong" due to logging traveling caches that've gone to rest in states where we've not cached, I'm not overly impressed. If geocaching had a way for us to "fix" these like I've done in GSAK to get the maps posted on our profile it would be an improvement. I much prefer the maps anyway. If people are getting enjoyment from them, then they qualify as a good thing. The folks that don't like them can not-click on that tab and never see them. Remember: Look for the fun. -
Hiding Unavailable Caches From Map
two bison replied to gururyan's topic in General geocaching topics
That site is so hard to use I avoid going there. If the comments there were listed like here in the forums so you can scroll through and actually get a feel for what people are saying it might be useful. The way it is now? Not worth the time. The "suggestions for improvements" should be brought back to the forums. The whole idea that you have 10 votes and then while your idea languishes at the bottom of the heap out of sight and therefore on no ones mind makes it even less useful.
