I've been using Oziexplorer for about 2 years now and personally I think it's great. We use it for Geocaching and hiking. I've got most of Alberta in 1:50,000 digital maps. For other areas I need, I download the Toporama maps - lower resolution and less detail, but free.

  3. quote:Originally posted by MrGigabyte: Toporama maps are created with an equal number... Thanks for the help understanding this MrGigabyte, I knew there had to be some relationship. Not exactly the fastest method to acquire maps, but for the price, you can't complain! What do you do when a map image (such as 072M16) shows from Lat 51 45 0.0 - 52 0 0.0. Do you use the cos of 51.5? or just stick with 51 0.0? Can't see that it makes a huge difference for geocaching or hiking anyway, just wondered. Thanks
  4. I have my digital maps from Spectrum for most of the areas we go to but just recently read here about the free Toporama maps and calibrations and I've been using it to fill in the areas I don't have and it's great. I do have a couple of questions though. 1) In Ozi, what projection should I select in the calibration? I have Lat,Long but wondered if I should be using UTM - does it matter? 2) Most the map images are created the same size (3200 X 1600) which means when you use a UTM grid, you end up with a rectangle. I understand why this is, but has anyone found a method to set the image size to end up with a more correct image? I know this would be different with different Latitudes since Longitude changes. I now resize at 3200 x 2500 which gets close for some maps.

You can save this and in Ozi select File - Load From File - Import Waypoints fro Text File. Then all you need to do is save the waypoint in Ozi and you'll have the complete list. One problem that might come up is depending on what GPSr you selected in OZI, it may set the maximum waypoints to 500 and the waypoints file for Canada holds over 700. In the Configuration menu under GPS, just change it to 1000 but realize that you can't load that many at once into your GPS. If you need any more help, feel free to email me

I use MS S&T 2002 and there are a number of file formats to import from, such as txt, csv, and Excel which is what I use. I'm able to put all the caches for my province or all of Canada in one file and then import them. Works great, but not sure if you have that ability in 2001
  8. quote:Originally posted by DrTazz: This is just an inquiry into how many GPS users know how to Project... I have a Garmin GPS76 which allows you to project a waypoint and if you have some basic navigation skills, not hard to use at all.
