Yes you can dowload ALL the maps you want either as zipped files of entire states or by individual counties. Each mapopolis map is a county. I downloaded Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsion and Ohio is just a few hours. (each state averaging around 15 megs. Jolly R. 3. For that particular search, yes. But what you can do is create a NEW search. As long as the filters aren't too complex there's a good chance you'll get your gpx file in a few hours. You can have a max of five queries I believe but each will only generate once per day. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "I'd like to buy the world a coke, but I only have fifty cents"
  4. Oh man, this is annoying. I just paid 90 bucks for the Mapopolis NAV (and the subscription to download any maps in the U.S. I want) three weeks ago. Now it appears I could have bought the exact same thing WITH an SD CARD to boot for only for Forty dollars less. mumble, grumble, mumble. Oh well. It's a great program. Well worth the 90 bucks. But still... Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "I'd like to buy the world a coke, but I only have fifty cents"
  5. Ten bucks cheaper here; http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=278783&adcampaign=email,ECOSTPG And free shipping. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "I'd like to buy the world a coke, but I only have fifty cents"
  6. Sorry if someone already mentioned this -- I went through the threads since Thursday and didn't see any mention of it. Did anyone else watch Survivor thursday as they were looking for the buried cache of food and blankets? How many of you saw the tree (the Devil's Fork) and immediately thought the cache was hidden in the hollow of the tree?? The locations for Survivor usually become tourist attractions after the show airs -- somebody HAS to find that tree and put a geocache in it. Jolly R. I think you might be able to find a replacement unit, but you might just try to superglue some rubber onto the cover in the place where you ripped the flap off. If you glue it just right, it'll work like a charm. I've had my GPS II+, which uses the same type cover, for 8 or 9 years without any damage. Superglue's not going to work on rubber. I'd try a bicycle inner-tube repair kit. They only cost a couple of dollars. Just use a piece of a patch, and the cold-vulcanization glue. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't guarantee anything... BTW - DON'T use the stick-on patches - they're junk. Get the kind that comes with the little tube of glue. Be sure to rough up the surface with the sandpaper supplied. http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/3608_2800.gif _"Don't mess with a geocacher. We know all the best places to hide a body."_ I tore mine about a year ago. I emailed Garmin and asked about buying a replacement. They sent me a handful in the mail FREE!! Not sure if I just got hold of a rep who was feeling generous or if it's company poilicy -- but it's worth a try. I still have four left (replaced the one on my dad's a few months ago. By the way I tried using a hot glue gun to fix mine. Then Shoe Goo. Nothing seemed to work. When you do replace the cap with a new one be sure not to over tighten the screw. It causes the metal plate to cut the rubber and you end up with the same problem again. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "I'd like to buy the world a coke, but I only have fifty cents"
  8. Check with your local camera shop. They sell a type of foam that partially cut with little 1 inch cubes. You remove the cubes to form the rough shape of the item you want to protect to create a pocket. Works really well. Been a year or so since I might some but it was 14 bucks or so for 4 2x3 foot sheets (each sheet 1 inch thick). Just about enough to fill the volume of a brief case with some left over. I wish I could remember what it was called. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "I'd like to buy the world a coke, but I only have fifty cents"

Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache. Naah, I'd rent a gorilla suit and run through the area just far enough away to leave the owner wondering. Jolly R. 10. I use VPC 6.0 on my Macs (dual processor 867 mghz) and a (Tibook 550) I've used NG Topo and Delorame's 3D Topo via VPC. On my 867 it renders maps and updates the screen fast enough that I have no problems. On the TiBook 550 it's slow enough on screen udates that I don't like to use it. So it really boils down to processor speed and to some extent what kind of graphics card you are using I suppose. As far as Windows version you'll find Windows 2000 will run the fastest on VPC6 (at least according to Connectix's old forums). Somethings you can do to speed up VPC is to crank up the Usage % in preferences for when VPC is in the foreground. The more RAM you have the better it performs as well. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that OSX 10.3 (Panther) doesn't break anything. VPC 6 runs so flawlessly with OSX 10.2.6 that's it actually running more stable than my PC at work. Go figure. Has a handle-bar type grip (like a ski pole) with a detachable mud/snow disk (which I don't use). Even has a wrist lanyard attached to it. Collapses down to something like 16 inches and can be extended all the way to 46" Fairly rugged. I'm a large guy and I'm able to put most of my weight on it. Mine is blue with white lettering on shank. No chance of anyone mistaking it for a weapon. Well...., I suppose anything could be mistaken for a weapon but you know what I mean. Jolly R. 12. I occasionally get a bad GPS file on my PQs. Not sure why since I hardly ever change my filters. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "Never declare war on a man who buys his ink by the gallon."
  13. I love GPXView. ONly thing that would make it sweeter is if you could edit reports and adde a FOUND/COULD FIND annotation. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "Never declare war on a man who buys his ink by the gallon."
  14. quote:Originally posted by Bilder:My brother gave me his folder full of Magic the Gathering Cards. There are over 300 different cards, all in great shape. Not sure what the price for these should be. I started to run through the cards on Ebay and found that most are selling for 1-3 dollars plus shipping. Found a few that are in the 5-10 dollar range and a couple that are near 15 dollars. I would be willing to let them go for much less. If anyone plays or collects these, send me an email and make an offer. I am putting together a list of the cards if you would like to see it. Figured I would offer them here before they go on Ebay. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have never been lost. Been awful confused for a few days, but never lost! N61.12.041 W149.43.734 You might want to consider visiting titangames.com -- they buy card collections and used games. They gave me a fairly decent price on a bunch of stuff recently. Probably could have gotten more on Ebay but it would have been a hassle to break it all down into individual auctions and I just wanted to get rid of them. You might also consider searching Google -- there are hundreds of websites for the trading/selling of cards. You'd probably find a buyer quicker going that route. The value of MTG cards can vary wildly depending on the set/edition. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "Never declare war on a man who buys his ink by the gallon."
  15. Apparently it's posted at Garmin's website. Changes made from version 2.30 to 2.40: Fixed potential memory corruption problem that could occur when tracking more than one WAAS satellite simultaneously. http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=123 I don't use WAAS so I'll probably pass on this one. 16. quote:Originally posted by Kealia:Jolly, Great thread! I think I may go grab a few from Henry Cowell here in the Santa Cruz Mountains - Home of the Redwoods (very bad for GPS...very bad....we hatez it!) Anyway, I think I'll leave them in caches in other State Parks and out of state when I travel. Thanks. You know I was just looking at the shield medallions on my old walking stick from Germany. (It must be twenty years old by now). And noticed a lot of them are actually printed on a coated card stock paper which in turn has been placed on a metal (tin I guess0 background with the edges folded/crimped to form a protective border around the paper. I know it sounds cheesey but they are acutally quite attractive. Given they're almost twenty years old and have been through a LOT of hiking they've held up surprisngly well. I'm assuming these would be far easier (and cheaper) to make as far as cutomized designs. (no embossing, die making or hand painting to worry about). If I can figure out how to post them, I'll try to take some pictures. Someone out there must make these. With that aside, Hike America and see what they have. Jolly R. 17. There was an article in time magazine recently (a side bar actually to a larger piece) which talked about gps technology and transponders and the amazing things they'll be applied to in the next five years. One thing use suggested by the engineer being interviewed talked about losing your keys (fitted with the technology) and being able to sign onto a website and have your keys tell you where they are. crazy stuff. (although I'm sure he was just giving an example off the top of his head). The article itself was about increasing privacy issues involved with the technology. Jolly R. 18. quote:Originally posted by Butano:I just got the e-mail back from Hike America. They can do a minimum order of 25 doing a name drop on a bear, deer, moose or buffalo for $1.25 each. This would be similar to my avatar. Roy also said they can do custom medallions at the same price for a minimum order of 500. He also indicated that he has been talking to someone at Groundspeak (Jeremy?) and they may have Geocaching medallions by the end of the year If you are interested, you can contact Roy at 1-800-880-4453. These are probably the same ones that you have seen at the National and other parks. These do attach with small nails. That is how I first found out about them. Check their web site, you can probably find any parks that you missed there. I never get lost! I simply investigate alternate destinations! Very kewl. Thanks!! Glad I posted. I have about thirty such medallions from my stay in Germany on a walking stick I bought in Bavaria. They're kind of fun to collect. If the idea caught on with geocaching it mike add another fun element to the craziness. ;D Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "Never declare war on a man who buys his ink by the gallon."
  19. Hey, SirRalanN, Your avatar is from my game, HackMaster. Do yo play?? I actually had the Fraim brothers base it on myself. 20. Single best cache (as far as disguise) in my book is THE WORLDS MOST VISIBLE CACHE by Kidkrazy. I can't even describe it to you because to do so would be a spoiler. It's one of those caches that has to be seen to be believed. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "Never declare war on a man who buys his ink by the gallon."
  21. When I lived in Germany I used to collect these little metal cane shields that you nailed to your walking stick. They gave them out at Volksmarches and sold them at nearly every train station -- sort of the European take on U.S. State decals and shot glasses sold here. Recently I logged a cache in a local park in Illinois and picked up a brochure. I was surprised to find that they are selling Cane Shields with the name of the park. This got me thinking -- it would be nice to have some cane shields made in the same manner as GeoCoins. Find a challenging cache and recieve a cane shield to affix to your walking stick. I know the ones I have from Germany were made of tin and often hand painted. Many of the designs are identical with only the name of the town or attraction being different. Does anyone know if there's a business that will take your design and make these shields the same way some sites make wooden nickels or geo coins? Might be an interesting signature item. Jolly R. I bought one of those Adapters which allow me to plug my GPSV into AC Power so the batteries don't drain and then go watch some TV. 25. I just placed a cache (and it was approved today) to celebrate my 300th find. I wanted to put some really cool items in this one as my way of saying thanks to all the local cachers who have given me an abundance of great caches to hunt these past few years. The first few finders are going to make out like bandits. There's a pair of working walkie talkies (WalkAbouts), a battery charger (for AA Nicads), a Radar Detector (which I actually found in a cache a few years ago) and some other items. First finder is going to have a tough time deciding which item to take I think. I made it clear that I don't expect anyone to trade up or even trade fairly on this one. I expect them to be replaced with toys and such for the youngsters. It was tough squeezing all everything in the container on this one. Jolly R.
