  1. Sorry for the bad link. I tried to put an illustration here, but did not have success. What I wanted to show is a combinaton of 8 batteries giving 10-12 volts for the GPS unit and the Palm. This lasts an all day long for GPS, Palm and external antenna. We can find pieces at Radio Shack store. Jacques
  2. [/img]http://www.velocarte.com/illustrations/batteries.html[/img] For me this trick solve the problem for the batteries. Jacques
  3. In my Garmin 60CS, I always use NiMH batteries. My GPS unit usually pulse a bip after 4 hours on continual use. Then I replace the batteries. I am satisfied with that. I put my unit under my coat and use an external antenna, most of the time, for the gain of accuracy. Jacques
  6. [ Fugawi just uses the actual maps - none of the SoftMap software interface is used and the data is imported and stored by the Fugawi program in it's own database ] Well, I understand that «actual maps» are the SoftMap's Maps, the 1: 50 000 and the 1: 20 000 ones. Wow ! I think if I understand well, I will bought this program. Thank you PDOP's Jacques
  7. Good question ! If wou go in a one week trip and want a PDA to dowload way points, tracks and routes every night after your travel, just to not loose the information you collected during the day and to clear the space on your GPS ? (If you do not want maps ..s on the PDA for sure) .. What PDA ? Jacques
  8. [you can also export sets of waypoints as comma separated variable text files and include the UTM coordinates. Fugawi will also open loc files - so it's easy to plot cache locations. I have put all the Ontario caches onto Softmap this way and it worked quite well.] And how do you import those informations in SoftMap? How are linked Fugawi and SoftMap ? Just by external exange ? Jacques
  9. One way I have used to get a list of waypoints as well as editing them is to upload them to your GPS and then you can edit them and download them back to Softmap or to another application (like GSAK) where you can print lists etc. You can switch your GPS to UTM and edit the waypoints in UTM although you'd have to look around for an application that you can download to and print a UTM list (GSAK is restricted at the moment to deg mins) Yes, this is the way for now. But its time consuming to maintain the list up to date. Uploading waypoints in MapSource is a convenient way. But I hope SoftMap will make it possible in the future. Is it possible to work only with UTM with Fugawi ? Jacques
  10. Your comments are interesting ! They open some doord in my mind ADVANTAGES OF FUGAWI The advantages of Fugawi are, if I understand correctly: 1. in the use of other maps and photographs 2. in the possibility to not be restricted to SoftMap 3. in the posibility to edit tracks and routes for mapping I will examine with more attention this software. For now, I use SoftMap and SoftMap Pro, which give me the same fonctionalities. LIMITATIONS OF SOFTMAP CONSUMER'S ACTIONS FOR CHANGES (excuse my bad english, I'm learning) I would like that SoftMap extend the opportunity to work wiht UTM coordinates in their software. We are able to see the coordinate in UTM, but we are not able to edit waypoints in one single list) and we are not able to export those coordinates for working with paper maps to replace a dead GPS (I always print and carry a paper map for security, and a list of waypoints). There are also some lacks in exporting tracks and routes, the manual is a pity, some bugs and so on ... I met a technician here in Quebec (SoftMap'office is here in Quebec city) and he told me that those changes will possibly be include in the future upgrades. If all users ask for the same thing, we have more chances to have a product tailored for our needs ?? Have a nice day, Jacques
  11. Somebody interested to exchange tips and knowledge about using the software called SoftMap ? This software is specific to Canada and Quebec. May be we could talk about PathAway to. I am in my first year of geocashing and a new user (one year) of this software, I got problems and would like to know if somebody have the same limitations. I use this software to keep tracks, waypoints and to make maps for hiking. Hi, Jacques from Quebec city. jb@velocarte.com www.velocarte.com (velo et randonnées pédestres)
  12. If you live in Canada, you could use SoftMap Plur or SoftMap Pro. This sotfware comes with topographic maps of Quebec or Canada. Jacques
  13. [Do you know if these places ship to Canada? ] Try www:gpscity.ca, they have all what you need. Delivery is prompt. Jacques
  14. Thank you for all the responses. I understand. I will look for a Palm to link to my 60cs. Have good trips. Jacques
  15. Does somebody know how to remove some pages on the 60cs unit. I want to use all the memory for maps and traces, so I would like to remove informations about geocashing, games, fishing, hunting ans marine. I dont'n need all those pages. For Geocashing, I need only UTM coordinates. Thank you. Jacques

    Sweet!!!

Quote: [The Mapsend topo does at least have the rivers and streams that are missing in S&D Canada which is helpful when navigating to a cache. Contours aren't much help (not that there are many contours round this area anyway). Comparing Mapsend Topo Canada, Mapsource and S&T, Mapsend looks pretty good, although not as up to date as S&T 2005, at least around here.] _____ I looked on the line on the Garmin Maps and I am not sure I will buy it. After I compared with SoftMap which provide maps from Canadian Topo maps (from Government). I saw the region of Mont Gosford, near the frontier in the south of Quebec. Rivers and streams are there, but the small roads arent not on the map. All roads and trails are on the maps of SotfMap. I compared with another region, in the mountains in the north of Quebec City. I had the same regret: trails are on SoftMap'maps but are not on Mapsent's topo. In addition, this software provide maps at the 1: 50 000 and at the 1: 20 000 scale with one clic of your mouse. Unfortunately, the SoftMap'maps cost about 80.00 $ for one region and for one scale (Quebec is divides in five regions, but I dont need them all. Maritimes provinces are on one CD for 80.00 $. Unfortunately, I cannot download maps on my Garmin. I would be able on a Palm. Voilà ma réflexion. Goog walks in the forest. Jacques
  17. You are right about downloading Maps on garmin. But if you got a Palm, SoftMap has a module to download maps on your Palm (PathAway). Jacques
  18. Try SoftMap (Software and Maps for Canada) I use it and bought all the set. A very good software to use with your GPS. Jacques.
