  1. Hi all,

I am off to Vegas and Hawaii in August and of course am hoping to do some caching.

Has anyone got some fairly detailed maps of either area?

I am looking for vegas/death valley and Honolulu/oahu

I want to use memory map if i can.

    Thanks

    Terry

    G'Day stranger!

I made a detailed map of Oahu last year for memory map that's calibrated & ready to use. It's about 10mb & I'll send it to you if you want.

There's some great hikes up the mountains if you've got time but you HAVE to go to Honu Beach Cache and bring your snorkelling gear. There's huge turtles everywhere there - it's awesome!

  2. It's certainly sad to see it go. We always enjoy reading the logs even though we're now on the other side of the world. We've so many fond memories.

For what it's worth as it's now a very old website that'll probably exceed it's bandwidth limit anyway after only a few hits, there's a whole load of photos here.

Here's one of our favourites taken during one of the Taunton camping event weekends...

  3. I am off to the Caribbean in a couple of weeks, wayhay, and am hoping to get a couple of caches in (dont tell the missus) but I dont have a map for MM. Anyone have one or have any ideas on how to get one?

I have a version of Memory Map that can calibrate maps (I have been using it long enough that OS hadnt forced them to take the feature away) but cant manage to convert downloaded maps into a format that can be read in (PNG 8 colour).

Have a look at this video tutorial here to save big maps. You will then need to convert the image file into tiff format using something like photoshop in order for memory map to read it for calibrating.

BTW, I downloaded the trial MM Europe edition from the MM website a while ago, which includes the calibration feature, and used my original registration details which worked fine.

  4. Here's one of our logs from a cache Mr H did last week...

After having a bit of a fright at the previous cache by nearly treading on a rather large brown snake, the chances of seeing another one, I thought, would be pretty slim. So off I went, and about ten minutes into the walk there's a rustle of leaves below me; I look down and my foot's actually stood on the tail-end of a red-bellied black snake as it slithers away!!! Thankfully, he didn't turn!

Anyway, after my heart beat had normalised I carried on and enjoyed the walk out to this one. Spent ages trying to retrieve the cache and then worked out the correct way once I read the clue!

    Lovely spot, thanks,

  5. we are hoping to go caching in the forest of dean as we have heard there are some really nice caches .

What we after is a camp site we don`t need clubs and pubs and disco`s on site as we will be caching all day ,all we need is a nice small site with clean showers and toilets can any one out there give us some help in finding such a site many thanks

G'Day! (yes we still spy on these forums now & again!)

Anyway, we know the ideal place as we had an ace weekend camping and caching in the Forest of Dean a couple of years ago. The campsite's called "Doward Park" and is a lovely quiet site surrounded by woodland with good clean amenities.

Here's a list of nearby caches

  6. Looking forward to welcoming you to Sydney in 7 ish weeks whatever your name is

I can't work these aussie caches out - they're all upside down

Nah they are all good mate, all good. You up to date on your lingo for your trip cobber?

It has been lovely here today about 30 in the breeze and 33 out!!! Now it is 8.30pm and 27 and rather humid. We got a FTF today but for a 3.5 rating.....forget trying a 5/5 here :D Have you seen any caches that have caught your eye?

I'm getting the idea of Kayshing (Kiwi Gary brought that one here), plus I've got to remember that if I find a "Swaggie" then I have to leave it (unless I'm going to log it on the "Other" site). No putting hands in crevaces or cracks, lift stones very carefully etc........ I found some diving gloves on the cheap - they're 10mm ones which I believe could possibly stop a lot of bites (I reckon there might be a market for them out there!)

As for actual caches, I've got the whole database of NSW, ACT and Queensland (and it's being regularly updated). So I dunno if I'm going to go out with a "list" as such, but the Caches along a route might come in handy..... (Sydney to Melbourne and back then to Brisbane via Gold Coast and back to Sydney - all by road)

aww mate ya gonna love it. It's a beautiful place and you will see amazing places as you pass them. Looking forward to catching up with you at some point as you visit Sydney
