  1. You don't mention if this was an urban or remote cache. You could check with the appropriate law enforcement agency (or park ranger, etc.) to see if anybody has reported it lost. I think generally their policy is to hold the item for a while (if it has any actual value) and then return it to the finder if it goes unclaimed. Is there a local geocaching club/organization in your area? They may have a forum or other means to report lost or found equipment. You might also try posting in the appropriate regional forum here. I know if I lost something that valuable, I'd be putting the word out to local cachers to be watching for it. I agree with previous posters who said don't put it back in the cache as the next person who finds it may not be ethical about it. The closest I would come would be to post a piece of paper in the cache saying, "Lost your GPS? Email me a description of it and let's talk. <email addresss>" And when it's all said and done... if the true owner can't be found, you might consider donating it to a school or something.
  2. I'd forget about it and move on. What's one lousy FTF in the grand scheme of things? I'm not a huge FTF hound, but I've had a 2nd-to-find or two where the only way somebody could have beaten me to it was enter a property before it opened. I followed the rules and waited and got burned. But they got the FTF, as far as I'm concerned. If the other guy found it first and made an honest effort to get to the log and just couldn't, I'd say you got beat fair and square. Sounds like he left "proof" that he found the cache that under most other circumstances people would be fine about. How many times have we seen, "Forgot pen, left muddy fingerprint on log" etc. People like to assume the worst about other people's intentions.
  3. This is Tilley. She's a noob, but we've got high hopes for her. She went on her first caching adventure on 10/10/10, the day after we adopted her. She likes to ride shotgun...
  4. This may be my favorite I've written. My DNF log from http://coord.info/GC2CW7C, Don't FENCE Me In! I came back and logged the FTF the next morning.
  5. We turned our neighbors on to geocaching which went fine until what they thought was a cache turned out to be a box of dead kittens. :-( I don't think they've cached since.
  6. That one works nicely as well, I use it, too. Thanks for putting it out! Any way to fit a Thomas Guide challenge format into that macro?
  7. I don't think this will do. I have it and it only prints out which sections I have done not what cache is in that section. I know I could use the map to locate them but that is very tedious. Sorry, I should have elaborated.. The MapDelorme macro will update your UserData4 field for each cache in the database with the Delorme Page it falls within. You can then filter against that any which way you choose. To do so, click the "Update Delorme" button rather than the "Map It" button.
  8. The GSAK macro MapDelorme http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=9643 will do this for you.

This is a fun concept, and I just played with it a bit by generating a barcode and scanning it. Unfortunately, it attaches the exact address where you are to the barcode when you scan it. There are no options for reduced granularity (i.e. zip code or city only.) You can mark your scan private, but it appears buggy and sort of defeats the purpose. For instance, I tried to mark my scan private, but my home address appears permanently associated with the barcode now. It's basically all or nothing at the moment. Ideally, it would be fun to send out a unique barcode attached to a travel bug. People could scan it and virtually "attach" things to it. You could watch it move around and see what sorts of interesting things people attached, like photos, videos, audio, or text comments. Unfortunately, until they get the privacy stuff sorted out, I wouldn't send one out, and I wouldn't scan one I found.
  10. Or if they logged it via iPhone, I suspect it wouldn't show up in the audit logs, either.
  11. Krystal, once you download the PQ into the iPhone app, you can access the cache information any time, regardless of whether you have a signal or not. But you won't have map tiles. When I've gone up to do a cache or two in the Tillamook, I mark it as favorite and download the map tiles first before I head out.
  12. Would Chrysalides "Nix white space" grease monkey script do the trick here? http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/66749
  13. I am getting Internal Server Error 500's trying to download PQ files that were generated this afternoon. I was able to download one just fine earlier today, at 3:49pm Pacific.
  14. I can't get it to change to version 1.0.1. Every time I save my settings, it reverts back to 1.0. Is this a known issue? I would like to get the attributes included in my Pocket Query GPX's. I've examined the GPX files themselves and they are indeed coming through as 1.0, not 1.0.1. Thanks!
  15. And the Geocache Tab issues I mentioned above appear to be fixed now, thanks!
  16. I think I found a bug. On my profile page, if I click on the Geocaches tab I get the two columns, Found, and Owned. The Found side works fine. Unfortunately, clicking any links on the "Owned" side show me my found caches, not my owned ones. Edited to say the "All Hides" link works. But the individual links don't. So I am hosting one event, but if you click on Owned Events, you get all the events I have attended.
  17. Same here, although 40 Gal Cammo Can is pretty big, as well. When I found it, it contained a Chevy's sombrero, a full sized computer keyboard, and tons of other fun stuff.
  18. Sounds like http://coord.info/GC1YQ90 "101 Caches along Hwy 101" might be right up your alley. http://coord.info/GC1C1ER Elliovatte in Astoria is a good one Lots of great campgrounds all along the coast. And lots of great sights along the Oregon coast as well. Cannon Beach, Depoe Bay, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, oh and Sunset Bay/Shore Acres down near Coos Bay is not to be missed. Have a great visit!
  19. Thanks, I've added that to my event, 10 Years! Beaverton, Oregon ( http://coord.info/GC25PGT ) that I will be hosting on the west side of the Portland area on the 2nd. I'm also hoping to make the GEOregon event on the 1st.
  20. Once you've done "Mark as Found" or "Add Field Note" with the upload flag on and saved the field note(s), go to the Data tab and click "Upload Field Notes" .. this will upload them to geocaching.com. You can then go to http://www.geocaching.com/my/fieldnotes.aspx at geocaching.com and convert those into Found It or Write Note logs for the appropriate caches. You won't see your Found count go up until you've processed the field notes at geocaching.com. Hope that helps!
  21. Awesome puzzle, great hint, difficulty matches the puzzle nicely. Wish I'd thought of it. Don't change a thing!
  22. Ask and ye shall receive. Watch your inbox, Fred!
  23. I was doing some night caching at an urban cache about an hour from home. A twig popped off my eyeglasses and I couldn't find them in the dark. Had to drive home without them and then come back the next day to recover them. Thankfully they were far enough off the bike path that nobody stepped on them or rolled over them. Oh and I found the cache itself on the return trip, so it wasn't all wasted. :-) For those of you prone to losing your pens, check out the Inka, a nice keychain pen.. you can get them at those well known three-letter outdoor stores. I don't leave home without mine.
