  1. A group leader resigns from the group? Does s/he get to nominate the next leader when resigning? (I'm assuming that there are sufficient members to avoid probation and stuff like that).
  2. For me, like fi67, visits are a nice bonus, but not the main reason for posting a WM. I get satisfaction and fun out of finding interesting things, and out of creating good write-ups of the things I've found. Way back when I was pretty much the only WMer in my area tha wasn't a bad thing for me. It meant I had a free hand finding things. I log visits to WMs where the category is something that interests me. So is it worth it? For me, very, very much so. For someone else ... maybe not.
  3. Folsom Prison? There's always Immortalized in Lyrics
  4. That's odd, I had my lucky 7 "WMDE47 Lucky 12, Rotherhithe, London, UK" approved no problems and it's chock full of HTML
  5. I'd be worried about prevalence. Personally I've only ever seen the one (pictured above) but I'm open to persuasion to the contrary.
  6. Well, this is interesting. I have a photo of a similar monument taken in Finland. Mine commemorates the completion of surfacing of the road all the way from Kemi to Kilpisjärvi in 1971. And ... er ... no, I can't think of the right category for it. Now, I don't think "Road completion commemoration markers" will fly as a category - starting a whole new category would be overkill for these two But what I will do is ask the other officers of the Milestones category to see what they think about allowing these. I'm not promising but I'll see what the consensus is. Stand by ... Here's my example.
  7. Sure, why not? If that's what you want to do. I've logged visits to one or two of my own - normally when I've made a new follow up visit and want to record the fact. Incidentally I may also log multiple visits to other WMs if that's appropriate. For example in the Building Buildings category I've visited WMBT5M_The_Shard_London_Bridge_London_UK several times adding pics of the building as it is gradually completed. Which reminds me it's due for another picture soon, it's nearly finished.
  8. Figurative Public Sculpture? They accepted the giant fibreglass cat of Catford
  9. I've seen some beautiful ones in Belgium. No pics, sorry. Agree it would be hard to get the category wording right, it could be very subjective. Also, would you want to exclude - say - a modern custom handmade example just on the grounds of age.
  10. I think there would be a prevalence problem with these, but I don't know for sure. My first thoughts when considering a category would be to consider whether there is a more inclusive (higher level) definition that could be used to make it more prevalent. In this case - I don't know I'm just guessing - maybe "designated disaster evactuation zones" which would thus include officially designated zones for volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, biblical plagues etc. (Just thinking aloud here ... may not be applicable in this case). (Oh, and I agree with Bruce that the fact that there are some ... er, shall we say ... undistinguished existing categories shouldn't be used as a supporting argument for a new one).
  11. You could submit Dog Jim along his plaque to the Animal Memorial category I'll give it a go. The only problem is that it means making a special trip to Slough (shudder) John Betjeman was right when he wrote "Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now".
  12. I agree with fi67. My main objection to this would be that they tend to be indoors, and Waymarking is generally an outdoor game. Over-prevalence could also be an issue - there are areas where every museum and cabin and restaurant has a stuffed moose or some such. On the other hand I've long wanted somewhere to submit Dog Jim, the stuffed dog on Slough station.
  13. Does this mean that you have to go back there and submit a News Article Location?
  14. I use: P to separate paragraphs BLOCKQUOTE for the text from plaques etc OL and LI for Ordered (numbered) Lists (eg numbered list of web references) UL and LI sometimes for bullet point lists A for links. That's about it. Maybe also CENTER I for Italics STRONG for bold So a typical waymark of mine (eg WMDGRX) would be: <P>Blah blah, see reference[1], blah blah see reference[2]</P> <P>The plaque reads:</P> <BLOCKQUOTE> Blah blah plaque text </BLOCKQUOTE> <P>References:</P> <OL> <LI> <A target="_blank" href="http://something"> Link 1</A> the first link blah blah </LI> <LI> <A target="_blank" href="http://something/else"> Link 2</A> the second blah blah </LI> </OL> A note on "A" for links. There is (or used to be) a bug where links were not rendered properly by WM.com unless you included something before the href. In the example above I've said target="_blank" but I could have put cheese="tasty" or any nonsense to work around the bug. target="_blank" actually opens a new browser window, and is considered bad form by some web designers, so maybe I should choose something else instead. For more on this bug see this old thread I don't know if the bug has now been fixed. I've never put pictures into a long description as suggested by silverquill. I may try it sometime.
  15. Actually, more likely to be the other way round. The manners of the dog being governed by its training by the owner.
  16. Do you mean the first hint? There is,not a misspelling there. Hint 2...I've changed that as I can't spell! Yeah, that was what I was referring to (of coarse)
  17. I didn't know about the special equipment attribute either. You learn something every day. As you've pointed this out, I could make a guess from the second hint (although I'm puzzled by the apparent mis-spelling of the first word in the hint ... is there a subtle meaning there?).
  18. That would be post #199. See http://www.coaldutyposts.org.uk/today/list.html I have a bookmark list of caches near coal tax posts, which I set up using a "caches along a route" using a route that passed through all coal tax posts, but I haven't updated it in ages ... because it was such a faff to maintain. One day when I get a bit more free time ...
  19. Personally I'm disinclined to support a category where the target WMs are only in one country. I realise that not many (any?) categories are evenly distributed globally, but (with the exception of specific local ones like survey markers, historic markers) all should at least open the possibility of finding waymarks elsewhere. I did a very brief bit of research on this and found that there is a Unitarian church in the UK and there's an International Council of Unitarians So I would oppose this category if it excludes such churches and limits itself to those in the US, to the exclusion of those in Canada, Europe, Asia and elsewhere. My opinion - for what it's worth - is that if the targets for a category are limited in area then the first thing one should do is to consider broadening the category definition so that it becomes more inclusive. If it's the case that at present the proposed cat is limited to the US, but by widening the criteria it becomes more global, then I would make my support conditional on doing such widening. If, however, the UK and international bodies would be included in the definition anyway (I'm not sure I understand this) and provided that Unitarianism isn't a subset or offshoot of one of the existing church categories (I have no knowledge of this area) then I'm OK with it. In the past I have supported geographically limited categories and I think that was a mistake. I resigned from the Victorian Postboxes group because a perfectly valid Victorian era box outside the UK was declined on vote. I realise that I may seem like a bit of a nit-picking killjoy over this, especially as I'm unlikely to submit any WMs to this category, but that's just my three ha'pence worth. All IMO of course.
  20. Having done the RESEARCH, RESEARCH part, you might want to stop for a moment and CONSIDER: CONSIDER making your category a broader concept to make it more inclusive and more global, (Global and Prevalence criteria) not applicable in every case and you may instead want to ... CONSIDER making your category a narrower concept to rule out mundane and uninteresting submissions (Interesting and Informative, and Prevalence criteria) CONSIDER the kind of submissions that you might get, but don't actually want. How can you write the rules to be clear, simple, but also to rule out "junk" submissions. CONSIDER what it would be like to submit one of these waymarks. Would you know what to do based on the category description and submission rules? Are the rules too fussy? Does your description clearly describe what's required?
  21. The fragmentation of church categories kind of mirrors the myriad different denominations that exist. There are sooo many different categories. It's one of those areas that I think we'd do differently if we had the opportunity to start over again. A couple of things to think about: Are these global or a US only thing? Is the proposed category at all redundant? ie are the Unitarian Universalists a subset of any existing category (sorry for my theological ignorance) Personally I stick to the "this old church" category if I waymark churches at all, so I'm just sounding a note of caution We already have: Presbyterian Churches Anglican and Episcopal Churches Church of the Nazarene This Old Church Orthodox Churches Lutheran Churches Wesleyan Churches Baptist Churches Methodist Churches Country Churches Roman Catholic Churches Assembly of God Churches Medieval Churches Megachurches Cathedrals (and Wedding chapels and a few other church-related ones) I'm sure there must be a fair degree of redundancy in there ... if only I knew the difference between all these -ans and -ists
  22. The first in Wales was The First in Wales and a fine cache it is. (I know you're working on a UK basis, but I thought I'd just plug one of my favourite caches)
  23. We just passed 100! But you have 2 years on us.
  24. So how about putting nappies in caches? Good idea?
