  1. I honestly wouldn't argue with a 50 find rule, but I know nothing will change, so just kind of gotta get used to things. I do wish there was a tutorial that was in bright red letters at the top of the hide form. Something about averaging coordinates and not to use an iPhone or google maps aerial views for coordinates among other things. Just a helpful guide to get the best coordinates before people go out there...
  2. Well, perfect besides being part of the geocaching app. I see those kinds of things pretty far off as far as features go, at least the audio half. Pictures uploading and viewing would be nice though. I'm gonna hit a few caches today that are close to home and try this out and see how it works. I'll post back when I get it all online...
  3. I was thinking of this just today. I have an iPhone with voice recording capabilities. My headphones also have a mic in them, so once I get to GZ, I can hit the record button and record myself looking for and finding the cache without holding anything in my hands. I've thought about doing this for most of my caches and then finding somewhere to upload them to and linking these into the cache logs. I'm looking at a couple options, but nothing "perfect" has come up yet. edit: couple things I thought about. I'm currently using my iPhone to geocache, so using my phone to find the cache and to record myself doing it might be an issue. I'm trying to find a cheap venture HC to use once I get to the cache area and my iPhone for the paperless side of things, so until then, not sure how it will work out. I did find an app that's pretty much perfect I think and it's free. Uploads up to 60 minutes of audio, geolocates, adds up to four pictures and does speech to text. Not sure if it gets much better than that really. Here is a link to a test I did in case anyone was wondering what a phone made by a fruit is capable of... http://www.ipadio.com/phlogs/nwcrew/2009/08/30/Last-Test
  4. I don't really worry too much about what people think of me, more than if they see what I'm doing, come back later and take the cache, which would be an obvious bummer. So I just do that. I grew up riding BMX in the streets and have had so many run ins with cops pissed about grinding on handrails, doing this or that, that I don't really worry about that. Like the previous poster mentioned, if you're honest with whoever, no one cares.
  5. I have only traded a handful of times in the short amount of time I've been out caching. I'm just shy of turning 30 and just don't really see the point of moving items because it's usually stuff I have no use for, so I would trade it here, then retrade it back at the next cache. I do have items in my backpack though if the oppurtunity comes up, but for the most part, TNLNSL. I AM working on a few caches that are themed and will hopefully stay stocked up. I won't give them up right now, but I'm pretty excited for them and they are family friendly, but things that appeal to adults just as much as the youngins...
  6. I've been seeing this a bit lately. People logging finds on this site with remarks like, "no pen, but I found it" I even saw this one a cache that had four DNF's, then a note from the owner saying it was missing and it would be replaced and then a person a week later logging a find, meanwhile the cache is still under maintenance. Also seeing a few of the, second time finding this, didn't sign this time. How are people logging two or more finds per cache. Oh well, integrity people...
  7. Isn't there about a $200 difference in price here? The 60csx is obviously going to be ten times better than the etrex. If all you can afford is the etrex get one, make sure you get the HC model though, I hear it'll get you much better results. If I could afford a 60csx I'd get one, but I'll be finding a etrex myself to use with my iPhone...
  8. My luck has been this: The compass in the actual app works well, but if you're not out in the wide open, it will take some time to figure out where to point you and even then it might be off. What I do as far as that is concerned, get to the general area, set my phone down and start searching, come back a minute or two later and see what it says. At that point it should have calmed down enough to help you out. A GPS device is going to work much better than the iPhone for getting you close. Usually my iPhone does the trick, but there are areas out in the middle of nowhere where I wish I had a legit GPS device and not another DNF on my list. Like CanDMan47 suggested, start small and go bigger as you learn the tricks. If you're really stuck on something, 75% of the time you wouldn't even know you were walking on top of it, you just dont have the experience to find them, it's not the GPS device. I still have that issue. I'm under 100 finds and I keep finding new things that I'm surprised I even find. good luck!
  9. I think it's really a risk for you. You can go for it, but it could be gone quick or last a long time. Be prepared for it to get muggled or to have someone not follow the "rules" and have it get removed. I would say to let people grab this when children are not present and try to keep it so people aren't running around school grounds. Are there woods or somewhere near the front gates you can hide this so people aren't wandering around?
  10. Well, I've been thinking about my 100th, got a few in mind, guess we'll see what happens. Thanks!
  11. yeah, wouldn't mind seeing the bottle cap cache opened up edit: well, so we can see how it's built...
