  1. This seems to be a really common question among GC users. I think Magellan did not explain it well enough in the documentation.
  2. The GC is the entry level Explorist and true, you cannot upgrade the map beyond the base map. I got mine in the first weeks after it was released to market. Battery life has never been an issue on mine. I wish I could get top maps sometimes, but it is hard to see much on those little screens anyway. Some level of detail in between base and topo might be best. The Explorist 310 seems to be the same unit, but with upgradable maps. Does this Etrex 10 allow you to update the maps?
  3. Some people would be wary of placing a strange SD card into their PC or phone
  4. Which do you think is cheaper, spraying or camo tape? A roll of camo tape is about $3 and you can do a lot of containers for with a single roll, so I think that is probably a lot cheaper. It doesn't hold up as well in the long term though. Well, in the long run I think you can do a lot more with a can or three of camo paint (brown, black, tan) than a roll of tape. How many rolls would it take to do an ammo can? Tape did not do much good on a homemade concrete rock. It would all depend on what exactly you wanna do.
  5. I wont put a razor in a cache, but I will try to put some cheap sunglasses in here
  6. The Cozumel caches are primarily in restaurant/bars along the road running along the harbor. If you cross the bay to Play del Carmen, there is a Virtual at the dock. And it is a 2 hour bus ride to the virutal at Tolum. Try to get to Tolum anyway, it is an ancient Mayan temple complex. Really cool. Which cruise line are you on? What other ports are you going to?
  7. Then they are opening a can of worms. But at least they are honest and I applaud them for them. I didn't find one last week. No one had looked for it in over a year. I could have said I found it but I didn't. In fact, from my description of it, the CO archived it. Sometimes I wonder if I should have "finded" it, but am glad I didn't.
  8. I think the CO is still talking about me. I tried to log it as a DNF in May 2010, because I did not find it. The CO deleted my several attempts to log the DNF, so I tried logging it as a find, just to see what would happen. He deleted that too, which was fine because I didn't find it. When some more DNFs were logged recently, I decided to try again with my DNF. Again the CO kept deleting my DNF logs. Now that my DNF has been reinstated, it appears that my "find" was reinstated too. The CO seems to have forgotten that the real issue was that he wouldn't let me log my DNF. I honestly think that many of the "found it" logs on this cache are placed without finding a container or log, or perhaps via a throwdown. Of course there is no way to know since, a) the container is so often muggled and there is no-one to audit the logs.
  9. Well the cache has been found and the CO finally updated the coordinates to the coordinates that I recorded exactly one year ago today. The cache is back in business. Long live the Labadee cache!
  10. Just turn it on. Until is gets a fresh satellite lock it assumes you are in the same place where you were when you switched it off. It is the same way with every GPSr model I have ever seen.
  11. I had a lot of trouble with my car GPSr on Sunday, though I figured it was because I was downtown, surrounded by tall buildings.
  12. Otherwise you might have been so caught up in the learning experience that you might miss it.
  13. What is against the guidelines, asking what you get with a PM or soliciting for a free one?
  14. What happened? I'm not going to bring that up here. Let's just say that it was once again, a disagreement between cache owner and cachers that had to be settled by Groundspeak. I thought you meant with the falls themselves. I've heard of a lot of bad injuries climbing them. Everyone is holding onto the next person, so even if you are surefooted, you may get dragged down by someone 5 people back in the line. My daughter and I went to the falls, but decided the climb was not worth it. I do recall the cache requirements were ambiguous, asking the elevation of the parking lot. The lot was on a hill, and GPSr's are not real good at elevation (at least mine isnt). I made sure I logged a photo with my log.
  15. It depends what day it is. This summer I got a boat, so any excuse to put it in the river. Other times, I am happy to find a MKH on a guard rail. I think I am never happy to lift a lamp post skirt.
  16. Me neither and this cache seems to be a poster child for the rule against vacation caches, regardless of its age. It is no doubt a poster child. I will be saddened when it gets archived though (and I have no doubt that the recent arguing in the logs of the cache will only hasten its doom). Perhaps I am to blame for replacing the container last year and prolonging it, but I am glad I did. I can find myself on both sides of the fence on this one. On one side, it would be a shame to archive the cache as it would likely mean that it might be the only opportunity for geocachers taking a Caribbean cruise to find a cache in Haiti. The next closest cache to the port looks to be about 8km away and has only had 2 finds since 2005, and from the logs it doesn't appear that either was from someone on a cruise. I know that I'm not the only one that likes to find caches in other countries, especially when there are so few available (currently 7 active caches in the entire country). On the other side, it's a "vacation" cache, and although it's grandfathered, it *does* have an active CO. However, it doesn't have a maintenance plan other than a request to the community to maintain it. If it were up to me, GS should not allow a cache owner that is still active, from failing to maintain (or having a viable maintenance plan) on *any* cache that they own, even when it falls under the grandfather guideline. There is no possible way to get to the other caches unless you are an aid worker or have a private army. The cruise beach is quite securely cut off from the rest of the island. Maybe the cache instructions should be to write your caching name on a dollar bill and drop it behind the rock. It would make a great Virtual Cache, or even an Earth Cache (the volcanic limestone formations are really cool.
  17. If someone is so desperate for a smiley that they will lie about finding my film can in a guard rail, I am not going to be the one to push them over the edge by deleting the find. In fact, I would never know as I do not audit the log sheets. My puzzle cache is a different story altogether. I do look at the log book of that one and since it has a fraction of the finds, I recognize the names. When my multi along the river gets found I will likely check the logs. Any excuse to run the boat.
  18. If I could turn back time, I would do things differently. Until I figure out how to do that, I am stuck with the consequences of my admittedly childish behaviour. I stated several posts back that I have turned it over to Groundspeak and they can deal with it as they see fit. If they reinstate my DNF, great. If not, I'm sure I will still have a full and happy life, and I will continue to go geocaching every chance I get. For what its worth, I appreciate you admitting publically to the part that you played in this. That's great and all. But by the time he brought it here there wasn't much any of us could do to help. All he accomplished was to make a lot more people privy to the whole sordid affair. You have a point there. Do you get points for patting Avenois on the back?
