  1. I just got this email from a 'no reply' address:

    Log Date: 7/26/2004

    Greetings from Geocaching.com

""It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time.

While we feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and

block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a

reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Please either repair/replace

this cache, or let it remain archived, so that someone else can place a

cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this

location. Also, if you haven't done so already, please pick up any

remaining cache bits as soon as possible. ""

This Cache (Gorley Hill GC4467) has been out for a while and some have found it while others have had trouble. When I checked the cache page, I found it had been archived! I haven't checked it since December, but I have no reason to think that it has been damaged or scattered into 'remaining bits'.

Anyway, what's going on? I've not been as active as I once was, but this was news to me. I have five other hard to get to, seldom visited caches, will these all be archived? Why would anyone from Geocaching.com send me an email from a 'no reply address?

Any insight on this would be a help,

  2. I have always enjoyed the quiet and green in cemeteries. I've spent many a pleasant hour walking and photographing. When I started caching, I thought of a particular spot in a local famous cemetery. While scouting it out, I was stopped by an 'official'. I was surprised when he offered me a map of all the famous graves. It seems that it is quite the tourist spot!

I ended up with a virt that has been very popular. It's a quick grab at a very special place.

All that said, If you're uncomfortable seeking for such, don't. If you're thinking of hiding a cache in a cemetery, use more than the usual discretion. Spend some time observing what goes on during a regular day. If in doubt, 'hide' a virt, but only if that won't cause undue disturbance.

    Keep on Caching,

  3. From a cache that temporarily had us on the run... away, far far away.... we came back a few weeks later and beat it, though!

    ----

Should you decide to expose friends to the Joys Of Geocaching, we'd like to offer a few helpful tips.

    1. Never assume that this'll be a quick jaunt in and out. Take all necessary supplies, including the special pack that carries the 17-month-old baby. Hauling a toddler on your shoulders for more than two miles at a stretch isn't so good on neck muscles.

    2. Cell phones for everybody. Even if the other three adults in the group have one, a fourth will, at some point, be necessary. As a secondary note here, leaving them in the truck isn't conducive to finding lost tribe members in the brush.

    3. Girl Scouts are smart enough to stay on marked trails. You should be, as well.

    4. Yellow jackets build their nests underground. Dogs like to dig. Yellow jackets can bite and sting, and will do both at once when they feel threatened. Dogs go crazy when they are being attacked by angry yellow jackets. Humans go just as crazy. Any questions?

    5. 0.2 miles through the scrub, even when you're positive you can guess at the cache location, might as well be 200 miles away and in another country.

    6. If it looks like the trail has ended, it has. It does not pick up again further on.

    7. Lakes, and the bogs surrounding them, harbor a variety of interesting wildlife, including crayfish, mosquitoes, and angry horseflies the size of Buicks.

    8. Given a choice between impenetrable brush and a sheer rock face, it has now been conclusively proven that half the males in the group will choose one and half will choose the other, while all females will simultaneously yell, You have GOT to be kidding, park themselves on boulders and refuse to move another inch in any direction.

    9. One of the rules in geocaching is to try to be discreet while on the hunt. Screeching the decoded hint clear across a lake to a scratched and bloodied man who has finally emerged onto a rock is not considered discreet.

...and perhaps the most important hint of all...

    10. If you are manually putting coordinates into your GPS unit, rather than downloading from the Web site, HAVE SOMEBODY ELSE DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR NUMBERS. The possibility exists, however remote, that you have transposed digits.

This has got to be the funniest and most accurate post I've read in oh-quite-some-time in these forums!

    Thanks

Since the stats have gone from here, I have changed my style completely. They just don't matter to me as much in my daily caching anymore.

Problem? I perused the Keenpeople site and thought, "Oh, that's nice". The way they make other links to software that uses GC's info and stuff. There really is a lot of nice stuff there, but then you get to the rant part. It seems to be set up to be a place where Anonomous people can rip TPTB on this site. Like we don't have enough here already! icon_wink.gif

I don't know, if someone wants to have a site that adds to Geocaching, that's great, I just don't have any interest in some bitter person ranting about *this* site that has really done a great job of establishing and nurturing Geocaching.

    I feel better already! icon_cool.gif

Not too sure of the scope of the problem, but I'm so sorry to hear that Brian Snat is having to archive his caches. Will this need to be permanant? I hope not.

I only know Brian Snat from his posts, but he can always be counted on for a knowlegable and reasoned take when he contributes to the discussion. I can only assume that his caches are well-planned and well worth seeking.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Criminal. More details would be nice.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. I dug up some stats on lion attacks in N. America. California has it's own list. It's really scarry to think about, but lion attacks are very rare (unless you're one of the unlucky ones). Of course, I live in Indiana and can only wish I lived nearer lion habitat!

Maybe that's the problem. Every year here in Kalifornia, we have several people killed by big cats because we aren't allowed to carry the type of "Insureance" Mr. Tahosa is refering to.

Call me crazy, but people who think it's better to have a dead human than a dead cat have got thier head screwed on wrong.

I don't think that Mr. Tahosa's insurance would be much help in a close encounter with a cat unless he used it as a club! Something with a much shorter barrel might help. icon_wink.gif

You mention that several people each year are killed by cats in California. I don't live in your state, but that seems quite high. My understanding is that human-cat encounters are rare.

I think it is Sierra Club which missed something here. Cacheing can *not* be equated with gizmo-enhanced hiking.

Around here, overwhelming majority of caches requires ATVing / jeeping (although it may also involve a small hike on top of this). And although responsible use of ATVs and jeeps is about just fine for the environment, it is those irresposible users who leave very visible damage and who give a very bad face to the ORVing community at large, and, by extention, to the geocaching at large.

Wouldn't that make them a "5" for terrain? Surely 4WD is 'special equipment'

My understanding is the same as yours. There was some discusion of this some time ago and there were quotes of the law about Wilderness Areas. These quotes led me to believe that it was OK to cache in at least some of these areas.

Here in Indiana there is only one Federal Wilderness Area. It is managed by the USFS. Hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and hiking are permitted. Nothing mechanical is allowed. There are a few remote caches in the area.

Do I understand right that this is an already existing virtual? Yours? Somebody else's? I don't see a problem with it. I'd probably include a reference to it on my cache page so any seekers could log it,too, while they're at it.

After spending a few hours there, sitting, talking, and enjoying the fire, we wandered back to the car. In the discussion on the way back home, it ended up that we'd both found our mental happy places last night. Fire, beach, clear night, full moon, shooting stars, good, welcoming, generous people, drink, cheer, merriment and a GPS.

Not actually. "You" don't own the land. "We" do. And we have hired him to maintain and regulate it. Sure, some Rangers are full of it and all, but most of them do a great job for very little of "your" money. Then they have to deal with people like "you". icon_rolleyes.gif

  16. I voted "no". It's just gonna be grief, or maybe jail time, who knows?

I made the mistake once of posting a question to the pro-gun thread on these forums. My question was, "why". I think your experience answers it.

No, seriously. You know her better than I do. Your picture of her is fairly bleak, but, she did keep trying (sort of). Is it possible she could learn to cope with bugs and dirt? I don't know about you, but I have a very low tolerance for screamers. Good luck!

It's all in the quantity. We had a similar deer situation here in Indiana at Brown County State Park. The deer had eaten everything in the place (or very nearly). They had become, because of their sheer numbers, an enviromental disaster. Since then, the park, and others, has been opened to hunting pressure. Several hundred deer have been killed in that one park alone. We can't do that with people, though, so when the use gets too high in an area, certain regulations and practices become neccessary.

I've seen popular caches near population centers where seekers have made a real mess. Too many people. On the other hand there are caches in more remote locations that only get a dozen finds in a year. I don't think there's a lot a seeker could do (short of starting a fire) that would be noticable to the next cacher. There just isn't that much traffic.

As far as the poll goes, I had a hard time picking between the last two. But I know Criminal to be a stand-up guy, so I went with sleep-deprived. icon_wink.gif
