  1. This site seems to have some utilities for converting between S-Record and other formats... http://www.keil.com/download/utility.asp
  2. Thanks for the info on S-records. I may tweak with it when I get some time. I reckon the worst that can happen is that I have to three-finger-salute it into the upload mode and re-load a good copy of the firmware.

  4. That patch didn't work for me. Not a high priority for me to puzzle through it though, since ExpertGPS does a kick a** job of data management. quote:Originally posted by Ranz:There is a patch you can download from the Delorme Website that adds the additional funtionality for the Magellan units. I have been able to get all features to work on both my MeriGold and my 315.
  5. For the purposes of the game, centralization is definitely a good thing, for all the reasons Jeremy mentioned. There needs to be a central authority that is responsible for updates and quality of the cache data. Unfortunately it can also be a detraction because you're limited to whatever access/features the central authority wants to provide, and have no recourse. I know there are people who would like to use the cache data that Groundspeak has accumulated (from all of us!) to enhance the geocaching experience (WAP, PDA, stats, etc.), and we are not allowed to.
  6. This concept had come out in a discussion a while back too, in terms of decentralizing the data so that the load on Groundspeak was lower and some of the people that are interested in large data feeds (to present WAP, Palm/PDA, cacher statistics, etc.) would be able to do what they would like to do. The big drawback is (a) developing the necessary software and ( dealing with freshness issues. The data would likely lag and could be inaccurate. A malicious person could present bogus caches or real caches with bogus data. A better solution would be a situation where some web site that wanted a data feed could pay to license that data feed. Everybody wins that way.

  9. After a long hike yesterday I stumbled in the parking lot after getting back to my Jeep. I guess I wasn't used to the hard surface. At any rate, my beloved MeriGreen went sailing through the air, hit the ground hard and tumbled end-over-end on the asphalt surface a half-dozen times. AAAAAAAAAGH! Well, nary a scratch, the unit was still turned on and working. I must say the rubbery outside and the raised edge along the screen did their job. I expected the worst! This morning I was driving my daughter somewhere and noticed that I didn't have any street detail! I popped the cover off and sure enough the tumbling fall had dislodged the data card so that it had "ejected". It wasn't going anywhere, since you have to remove the battery to get the card out. I pushed it back in to the click position and turned the unit back on and all was well.

  11. I just got the vehicle mount (the one that suction cups to the windshield) and the card power adapter. So far it works quite well. I wish the bar on the mount was a bit longer, since the combination of dashboard width and windshield angle on my Jeep makes it shorter then optimal by about 2 inches. Ideally it would sit a bit lower. I like how the power cable clicks into the cradle so that you don't have to fiddle with it. One thing I learned is to remove the silver retaining screw from the power cable...in my case the mount pushed the screw in enough to lock the Meridian into the mount! I had to remove the whole mount to detach the Meridian. Without the screw, that problem goes away and it's easy to mount/dismount the unit from the cradle.
  12. On the other hand, one has to be comfortable that sponsorship does not lead to incompatibility or favoritism. How would we all feel if Garmin became the primary site sponsor? Or Magellan? Or Microsoft? Those of us with different brand or computer orientations might worry about new "features" that would marginalize us, or affect editorial content.

  14. When the latest firmware came out I made a mental note to look at the file with a hex editor to see if something like this was possible. Has anyone tried this?

  16. Grrr...that really ticks me off, seeing as I just got 3.0 in late December as a gift. Seeing as it doesn't support my Meridian very well, I won't be in a rush to upgrade unless they have some really significant features that I can't live without. I've been using ExpertGPS more and more and Topo USA 2.0/3.0 less and less. Topo USA has 3-d features (not that important in Florida) and lots of data, but for geocache mapmaking/planning and waypoint management, ExpertGPS is hard to beat.
  17. More like "use our new MapSend Topo - Intragalactic Edition to transfer data from your creaky old Garmin into your Magellan Meridian with Alien technology. Never be stuck with a GPS that only works on your home planet again!".

  19. I contacted them and am waiting to hear back.
