  1. That is just about exactly what I asked a fellow down under the boardwalk at a bay side park while looking for a cache. Apparently he wasn't looking for the same thing, but seemed to think that I was the thing he was looking for.
  2. You are joking right? That thing is ANCIENT! They sell on ebay for $20-50 in the antiques category!

  4. Yes, you can find an address as you described. Find > Address> Enter address (city, street number, street name) > Goto >
  5. Oops. Forgot that our friends in the UK get routable topo maps! But here in the US we have to buy 2 different sets of maps to get both topo and autorouting street maps. . .
  6. I did end up emailing Garmin about adding more characters to the notes field so that geocaching hints could be more effectively loaded into the unit. I received a very kind response back. I don't have it here but it said that the highest compliment they can receive is for a customer to make suggestions for the improvement of a product. Also said that he would forward my suggestion to the engineers who do these upgrades and that it will be considered for a future upgrade.
  7. Autorouting does not work with topo software. Your unit is just autorouting using the standard included basemap. If you want more detailed routing, you'll need to buy City Navigator or City Select. I have topo and city select loaded at the same time. I use city select to navigate to the parking area and then switch to Topo if necessary to get to the cache.
  8. If you are going to be using a GPS frequently, you really MUST invest in some rechargable batteries. For about $20, you can buy a couple sets of NiHM rechargable batteries and a charger. You'll be able to use these for YEARS and always have good strong fresh batteries. Good for the wallet, good for the environment! The only thing that will hurt will be your backside from kicking yourself for not making the switch sooner!
  9. Think of it on the bright side.. . . . they dropped the price this evening instead of waiting until tomorrow morning!
  10. I'll call on Monday and see what they say. It certainly doesn't look repairable by any means, but it would be incredibly nice if they would replace it iwth a reman unit for their flat rate repair charge. Yes, it was in the bean bag mount. Usually I have it in a more secure suction cup mount but was driving a different vehicle and grabbed the bean bag for simplicity. Word to the wise: don't take sharp turns with the windows open when using the bean bag!
  11. Yes, the length of that bar equals 5m Don't know how to turn off blue circle though.. . .
  12. The 76CS is a bit better for marine use as it is supposed to float. Other than that, I'd make my choice based on your preference for the shape of the case.
  13. One of my Garmin 60CS units fell out of my car after sliding across the dashboard and out the window while turning. It is pretty well smashed up: The screen is smashed and the top part with the antenna and power button has separated from the rest of the case. I suspect it is a total loss, but am curious if Garmin has repaired other smashed units?
  14. If you are going to spend a LOT of your time hiking in the national parks, then the 24K series of maps are excellent. But once you leave the parks, you have no topo maps. I use the standard Topo software because I'd rather have the whole country than just the national parks.
  15. Yes, you do need one. I asked my family doctor for one to keep in my first aid kit and he thought it was a great idea and spent time telling me how and when to use it if someone is going into anaphylactic shock.
  16. If it must be a 3 axis compass, then your only choice is the Magellan. Garmin's electronic compass is a 2 axis version that must be held level. But I wouldn't trade my 60csx for any other unit, period. I like Garmin's quality, but I especially like their top-notch customer service in the event that I have a question or problem.
  17. Good Samaritan law or not, I am going to always help someone in need. Period. I'm not a diabetic, but my first aid kit has a tube of glucose Nor am I deathly allergic to anything as far as I know, but my first aid kit contains an epi-pen.
  18. You might get another bonus when you check the microsd card inside the unit. Some people have stated that they received units with 64MB cards rather than the 32BM one that is supposed to be in there! That will be an excellent first unit!
  19. I would like an explanation/solution to this too since I have noticed it and have been frustrated with it too. My best guess is that the mapsource route that gets transferred to the GPSr only consists of the specific waypoints used to create the route. The GPSr then calculates a route based on those waypoints using a different calculation method. I think that is what is happening. . .
  20. I must say that I think it is pretty darn cool that the first two cachers to find the cache left the GPS there since they did not feel that they had an appropriate person to give it to and wanted it to go to someone who would benefit more than themselves from it. I hope that the person who does take it has the best intentions in mind for it.
  21. Garmin shipped me a brand new 60cs this month to replace one which started having problems acquiring satellites. I sent them nothing but the GPS itself and they sent me a new one in the box. . . Did I mention that it was technically 6+ months beyond the end of the warranty? And they then gave me a new unlock code for my mapping software. Since I already had a second 60CS, I was able to turn around and sell the new 60CS and upgrade to a CSX at very little cost and apply my unlock code to the new unit. Had I chosen Magellan instead of Garmin, and the same thing happenned, I'd be sitting here with an expensive paperweight instead of a new top of the line GPS unit. Garmin rocks!
  22. For the same price, you can buy rechargable NiMH batteries that can be recharged hundreds of times. The only time I would consider these would be for extended backpacking trips or for use in the cold since they are more tolerant of freezing temperatures. Some of the newer Garmin models are not designed to handle the higher initial output of lithium batteries (1.7volts vs. alkaline 1.5 and NiMH 1.2), so that may be a consideration too.
  23. I know it is no scientific study and there are not enough data points to make any conclusive statements, but. . . . . I took my new 60CSX geocaching last weekend for the first time. I found 5 caches and it brought me within 3 feet of three of these caches and less than 10 feet from the others. These were all in heavy tree cover too!
  24. I agree that the Legend might be the better choice simply because it comes with the cable needed to download geocaching waypoints. Plus, it does have some limited mapping features and enough memory to hold topo maps of your immediate home area. If you really get into it and upgrade to a full featured mapping unit, you'll be able to use maps on both and your Legend will become a much more useful backup unit that you can let a friend carry when introducing him/her to the sport.
