  1. Set a trap cache. Nothing to hurt anyone just say its a day one only and watch it to see who shows up looking for it.
  2. Chiggers are related to ticks and spiders. Their development goes through the same four stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult. Adult chiggers pass the winter in protected places and become active in the spring. The young chigger or larva, which hatches from eggs deposited earlier in the spring, is the real troublemaker. It is a parasite that feeds on man and animals. After feeding for several days, the larva detaches and finds a protected place on the ground where it develops through the nymphal stage into an adult. Under favorable conditions, most chigger species complete their development in 40 to 70 days and produce one to four generations each year in Texas. Chiggers are active from spring to late fall but are most numerous in early summer when weeds, grasses and undergrowth are the heaviest. Nymphs and adults feed on insect eggs, small insects and other organisms found on or near decaying wood. Larval chiggers congregate in shaded niches near the tips of grass leaves, weeds, sticks and other objects close to the ground. They are activated upon the approach of a suitable host, probably by odor, carbon dioxide output and other stimulating factors, and crawl onto the host for feeding. Chigger Dermatitis The tiny, bright red larval chigger can scarcely be seen as it scurries along the skin surface seeking an attachment site. When it finds a suitable location, such as a skin pore or hair follicle, it attaches its mouthparts to the spot. On people, the chigger prefers places where clothing fits closely over the skin or where the flesh in thin or wrinkled. Contrary to common belief, it does not penetrate and burrow into the skin or suck blood. Instead, it injects a digestive fluid that disintegrates skin cells so they can be used as food. A feeding “tube” formed by the chigger secretion and skin cells of the host permits the chigger to extract food until it is engorged. After leaving the host, it undergoes further development on the ground. Affected skin tissue becomes red and swollen. It may completely envelop the feeding chigger, making the chigger appear to be burrowing into the skin. Chigger bites have a more severe effect on some persons than others. The bite itches intensely and may continue itching for several days after the chigger is killed or drops off. The itching probably results from the digestive action of the enzymes injected by the larva into the skin. Protection Several commercially available repellents are effective against chigger infestations. These repellents usually contain one or more of the following compounds: permethrin, diethyl toluamide, dimethyl phthalate, dimethyl carbate, ethyl hexanediol and benzyl benzoate. Most repellents are also effective against mosquitos and other insects. They are formulated as liquids, aerosol sprays, solid sticks and ointments. Common dusting sulfur, although somewhat messy and odorous, is also a very effective repellent. Repellents should be used according to instructions. Usually, they provide protection from chiggers for several hours. For protection which lasts several days, saturate clothing by soaking or spraying it with a repellent solution. For further prevention, wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid sitting or reclining on the ground when camping, picnicking, or working outdoors. Reducing the Itching Immediately after exposure to chigger-infested areas, take a hot bath to kill and remove chigger larvae. Then apply an antiseptic solution to any welts that have appeared to kill trapped chiggers and to prevent infection. Destroying the chigger usually does not stop the itching completely because the itching is caused by tissue reaction to the fluid injected by the chigger. Normally, two to three days pass before the itching stops. Temporary relief can be obtained by applying a commercial product that contains a mild, local anesthetic. Your pharmacist can suggest an appropriate product for your needs. Any unusual allergic reaction, fever or infection should be treated by a physician.
  3. Please send me to a thread if this is done already. I want to have a GPS event this fall. I have read about a few games but wanted to know if there is a place for a list of games for events.
  4. Are there digital altimeters like the GPS? And yes it is to map and plot a course and a profile.
  5. I am planning a project that ties into GPS and events at work. Well it gives me an excuse to be here on work hours. We want to go over a course and get the altitude changes over a two and three mile course. At about 10 yrd spaces. I have a Garmin Vista. I want to know how to get the most accurate altitude over this course. Is it best to go to the airport and punch in the altitude there? I have also been looking at placing the tracks over an aerial photo with the tracks and I wish the altitudes, but this may need to be done manually. Any help on something like this? Thanks
  6. Guns don't kill people!!! People with guns kill people!!!! Drugs can help people. Drugs can kill people. Ask John Balushi or any other of the other smart and rich and dumb and rich, poor and smart and poor and dumb... or go to the morgue. Fire can help people fire can kill people. Hey we could put some gas and lighter fluid and barbque starter, maybe some TBT in a cache. This stuff is expensive and we can save folks money. Read the label it has a name on it for a reason. Thanks for giving a topic to BS about.
  7. For a bicycle holder I have cut a bicycle inner tube into 1/4 to 3/8 inch strips. Used two of them slipped together with a larks head knot. Then one loop on the top/front of the GPS, under the handle bar and the other loop on the bottom. As an addition I wrap the neck strap around the inner tube behind the unit to take up slack and tighten the tube.
  8. I bought a cell phone holder at Radio Shack, it has a suction cup for the windshield or comes with a disk that fits the suction cup and the disk has double sticky tape on it. The suction cup has about an 8 inch flexable plactic covered "pipe" attached to it. on the other end is the holder that has sides that can be squeezed together with foam inside it, back and sides. As for a bicycle one I have cut a bicycle inner tube into 1/4 to 3/8 inch strips. Used two of them slipped together with a larks head knot. Then one loop on the top/front of the GPS, under the handle bar and the other loop on the bottom. As an addition I wrap the neck strap around the inner tube to take up slack and tighten the tube.
  9. None of the logs are from the members only cache. I cannot do that yet. And the owner of the cache was the first to know it was done.
  10. There is enough information on the web pages to get to members only cache. A little work is involed but it is there. This for non members and Jeremy so he can fix it if he wants to. I still will be a member some day.
  11. Maybe we could get gov't money and make a memorial and a flag to the bugs. We can come up with some money from buying $350.00 toilet seats.
  12. Hey RaD Dad Go to www.letterboxing.com check out the clues they put down. You don't need a GPS to get out in the country like they do. There are some close to you in Or. Besdes you can add some of these ideas to your geos.
  13. isn't there some mathoholic that could take the drop in altitude and the speed and make this come out
  14. I wrote on signs and things one my first mulit. I have made another multi and used signs that already exist. I think the better we leave things "clean" the better we can get this accepted all over. Look at some of the letterboxing clues thay have learned the art of telling but not everything and keeping the boxes from being found by people just wondering. I say no.
  15. I added this to my newest cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=21699 about picking up trash. I took out one bag and it was just a start. I agree safety is the first aspect, and washing after or hand wipes. Lets make it better, then when someone ask what it is we do, part of your response can be hide and seek and cleaning up after others. Sounds like home. I don't think any of the articles I have read about this "sport" have mentioned about helping clean.
  16. In reguards to the private proberty. A mall has private property. From around the building to the inside of it including the walkway. A Mall hhhmmmmmmmmmm maybe a good spot for a micro. Cords might be rough.
  17. one, Nebraska but will be traveling this summer to make more.
  18. I haven't taken mine on a plane but some concern might be a digital camera. I use one on the job and a police scanner. If I have the camera turned on it sets off the scanner on one channel. We had a simulated bomb explosion test here once for fire and emergency people and they siad they would take all our scanners and cell phones because of the transmissions. They would have a fight from me. I don't believe in gov't thinking they own my stuff and can take it when they want.
  19. To join or not join wasn't the question of the the cost. Mine was hoping the members only group would keep the things they trade for in the the public caches stay in the public caches. Not take from the public for the members only caches.
  20. Another new thing I have found with GPS is at http://www.seaotters.net/~scout/MinuteWar/ only one game has been played and they will start on the second soon and are hashing out some of the questions and answers of the game.

  22. I know that it takes space and hardware and manpower to run a fun game such as Geocaching. I think it is great and I know it will be around for a long time. I am surprised we don't have to pay a fee now for the space and time, but I thank you for that. My concern is with the members area. I may become a member sometime but I think its kind of a high price right now. I hope it doesn't turn into a hiding place for things that have been put in the public caches like bugs and any of the other items.
