  1. Rechargables, I know......I have a great set of 4. (Garmin GPS 12) BUT, one of my kids lost one of the set somewhere. (At least I'm blaming them! ) So that's another thing I ought to get one of these days.....
  2. Sounds cool. Like you and I both agree on X date we're going to launch our bugs from local caches (wherever local is) to GCXXXXX and whichever bug gets there first wins? Neat idea. If I ever have some allowance left after batteries I'm going to buy some so I'm collection "mission" ideas for them. That's a cool one.
  3. I almost hesitate to say anything.... But that e-Trex doesn't look turned on.
  4. It's been a while since I've tried to make a top ten list..... 10. Someone ask you how to get to the local ____ and you give them a distance and compass heading. 9. Duracell made you an honorary share holder. 8. You've ever said, "Well officer, it's this game where we look for these boxes....." 7. You know the location of all of your TB's. You think you still have kids. 6. In conversation someone tells you where they're from and you reply, "Oh, that's near GCX15T!" 5. You know what UTM, WGS84, NAD27 and HH MM.MMM are. 4. You CARE about #5. 3. You have a trunk full of more happy meal toys than the local McDonalds. 2. Your kids either say, "we're not going GeoCachning AGAIN" or "Can we go Geocaching?" every time you get in the car. 1. You have ever missed a flight or appointment looking for a cache.
  5. Here's some ways I've done it. I originally wrote the mapping section of this page and agreed to let Alan use it way back in, gosh...1997? GPSU is a good program, BTW, I still use it, though serial ports are getting harder and harder to find.....
  6. Travel Bugs! I like the battery idea, too. Insect repellent? Calamine Lotion?
  7. What a cool idea...a way to track, at least ATCF, my geo-caching mileage. Now if I could "plant" it at BM's then that would REALLY be cool.
  8. I regularly carry quite an array of electronics into the field for my job--GPS, FRS Radio, Cel Phone and PDA along with a flashlight, water, etc, etc, etc. I used to carry my GPS on my belt but found I tend to block signal too much. I now carry it on the shoulder strap of my stuff and get much more consistant reception. My FRS and Cel phone are all shoulder-mounted too.
  9. Sounds like a bunch of you all are AFRAID of the dark with your array of BFL's. I haven't done any night caching...yet. I spend a fair deal of time out at night though and unless it's cloudy, you'd be amazed how well you can see most nights. Granted, I'd take a light or two...one red-lensed and one white.
  10. No police department has ever come out and shot one with a .50-cal after a find..... Sorry, couldn't reisist in light of the furor over the recent "incident" in Hartofrd City, IN.
  11. NOT the Palm Tungsten E. Great PDA, but not GPS connectable, so if you're thinking of being all high-tech and interfacing the two, skip this one.
  12. Is there a website that allows you to input a street address and returns GPS Coords? Some of the map sites used to do that (sort of) but seems that most of them don't even 'give' coord info anymore. (Trying to seel it instead? I dunno.) Just thinking it would be nice for traveling and Geocaching. I know what address I'll be at or near, then I can search by coordinate to find nearby caches....
  13. It would be nice if there was a way to find caches along a route too...like you can find all the mcDonald's along your route in many online direction sites. Good for getting some geocaching stops on roadtrips.
  14. You have a DNF on a locationless cache that someone thinks they own...... The metaphysics involved in that is just mind-boggling! I know, I understand the locationless thing, but, think about it.... It'll make your brain itch!
  15. Reminds of of the Mr. Obvious bits that I used to hear on the radio in Indianapolis. A guy played a caller to the "Mr. Obvious" show and asked questions as if he was dumb enough to need warnings like that.
  16. Well, since I actually ahve a different response, I'll respond. I've done both. I agree, kids increase my trading. I guess TB's don't count as trades? it is LS, though. For me, seeing a new/interesting bird or dragonfly on the way to or near a cache is a big kick for me since that is my other hobby. I've got swag, but I guess it depends on my mood. I'm trying to come up with a signature item that would be inexpensive but nifty.
  17. I am planning a trip soon for business but hope to take a couple travel bugs I've found with me and plant them in new areas. It would be nice if there was a search for geocache option like the ones ont he map sites that let you find all the McDonalds withing n miles of your route. Not sure how possible it is, but it would be a sweet idea.
  18. Well, I haven't found any yet, but of the whole "geo-game" realm (My term, I think, to include geocaching, letterboxing, bm, etc.) It is the niche that intrigues me most. I happen to be stationed on a military installation so I don't think caching is goin to be too realistic here. However, trying to find BM is a possibility. I agree with the above post about the whole "techo-nerd" thing. That's me. My wife thinks letterboxing sounds interesting, so this may be a hobby we can converge on. We can try to find multiple "targets" in an area I hope. -WS
