  1. Here is a site that I got a lot of useful info from when I was doing my research http://www.stefanv.com/electronics/low_self_discharge.html
  2. Anyone have any recommendations on NiMH batteries? My wife has some Kodaks that are currently shot, I was looking at getting a LaCrosse BC-9009 and some of the Sanyo eneloop batteries. The eneloops are supposed to hold a charge almost (but not quite) like an alkaline and the BC-9009 is supposed to be able to revive worn out NiMH batteries. What does everyone else use?
  3. No harm, no foul. I was worried that I was missing something. I think I will call Garmin on Monday and complain, perhaps they could make a change in there next firmware update.
  4. Under the settings menu, my Summit does have an "interface" menu, but I was unable to set it to anything other than the Garmin protocol, no matter whether I was in S&T or not
  5. That's odd, I'd think the Summit HC and Legend HCx should be very similar, I wonder why the HCx outputs NMEA and the HC doesn't. GPSgate sent me an email for 20% off, so I paid the $10 for GPSgate express, I know it works so I figure it was worth it. I have another road trip coming up tomorrow and my wife does the navigating and doesn't react well when the GPS and/or laptop doesn't work properly, so I am going to stick with what works instead of experimenting
  6. One thing on laser rangefinders, some courses have reflectors on top of the pin that would greatly simplify getting a good reading
  7. The info I was finding was from when the etrex H line was launched, so they may have reversed course, if they have, great. Does xport in fact translate garmin into nmea? What I saw said that it can tranparently pass data and that it uses nmea 0183
  8. Thanks for the input PDOP's I didn't see it last night before I posted Update #2, I followed the link, but it appears that it only works on the GPS 18. GPSgate worked pretty well for me today, only had one issue where S&T stopped getting signal, GPSgate said that the GPSr was still connected, but wasn't recieving data, shut the summit off and turned it back on and we were good to go. I think the GPSgate express license is $12.95, I'd say its worth it at this point
  9. Update #2 Franson's GPSgate appears to be a workable solution, we'll see how it works tomorrow on the road...
  10. After a little more research, it appears that Garmin has abandonded NMEA, which S&T requires, in favor of their own proprietary protocol. Is there any work around solution?
  11. I tried out my new Summit HC today with an older version of streets and trips but it won't recognize my GPSr, it works with my old (and on the fritz) Legend but not the new (and hopefully more reliable) Summit. If I download the new version of streets and trips, will it work with the new garmin? Other work around solutions?
  12. I was wondering how changing Map Datums and coordinate formats affects stored waypoints? I typically use UTM when I am using my GPSr with a paper topo map and I think the ones I use most often are NAD27. If I mark a waypoint when I am in UTM and NAD27, what would happen if I tried to go back to that point while I was in NAD83 and Lat./Lon
