  1. Funny this should come up. On Sunday, we were at a family get-together, and we were trying to explain Geocaching to a friend's boyfriend. It was obvious that he thought caching was stupid, by the comments he was making. Someone told him that there are 3 caches on the trail that he walks his dog on every day, and he said he was going to find all three of them and destroy them. I think there are just a lot of jerks out there, who don't understand that people aren't always interested in the same thing that they are. I think that they think they're being funny, and don't understand the financial part of it, either. People may think Geocaching is stupid, or whatever they think, but they need to remember this: some people do it for their health... hiking is a great way to lose weight, do cardio, and for me, keeps my knees from hurting (strange, I know). What better incentive than to have a Geocache at the end? Maybe we should start a Geocaching Awareness Day.
  2. If I had to pick just one, it would be this one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...4d-0674a335144d It is on a trail, and the camo is amazing. I'm not going to say what it is, just in case someone wants to find it and hasn't yet and reads this, but email me if you want to know. I love great camo. I love hides that make me think, and I do enjoy hiking to a cache. We also found one that we had to look all over a huge lime wall in a state park. It took forever, and finding it finally was amazing. Like I said, I love great camo. I also enjoy multi's.
  3. In our city, there just aren't any places left to put a cache, so everyone is picking places that are what some would call "boring". Our city, Oshkosh, WI, is very historic, and even all of the historic sites here are taken. We don't mind the "boring" cache sites, we enjoy them all.
  4. Definitely the best part. I've lived in my city my entire life, and had no idea half of the places existed. Plus, Geocaching is the only healthy addiction I've ever come across
  5. Personally, if it was my display and I saw that, I'd be elated! Somewhere out there is a cacher that knew what it was and signed the log. I really think it enhances the display.
  6. Thanks everyone, I finally figured it out. I had to mess around with it forever, but it worked!
  7. We see a lot of STF logs first here, and no one cares. As long as the FTF logs and notes that he/she was the FTF, it's not a big deal.
  8. Haha, well then, when you do your first lightpost cache, have her "lift the skirt" so you'll be safe! Glad you got it working, I'll see if it'll work for me.
  9. You can't wait to go to sleep because you'll dream of geocaching
  10. Haha yeah, you will probably be doing a lot of skirt lifting!
  11. I'm trying to add caches to my pocket query. It keeps telling me there are no caches available. I'm not sure what else to do. I've read all the other posts about this and done everything said there, and it's still not working.
  12. Well, in my case, my first cemetery cache was on a visit to the Oshkosh Airshow this past July ("Flying High" in Wisconsin). It was a very solemn caching experience, and I kept in mind the whole time a friend of mine who died in a plane crash while returning from the airshow three years ago....so much so that I left an RIP for him on the log. I found it to be a very different, very respectful caching experience. Congrats on your first cemetery cache here in Oshkosh!
  13. We are saving the cemetery caches for the fall (which is never coming since it's still 80 degrees here in Wisconsin). We are all really looking forward to them. I have always loved cemeteries and the history they carry. I think they're ok, and that they're a great way to learn.
  14. I must be having one of those days. I want to load caches into my GPS but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do that. Can you all help me? I know this is going to be a "DUH!" moment.
  15. we have the 76CSx and love it. My fiance worked at West Marine for 8 years, and was their GPS specialist for the store he worked in. He's gotten to play around and take home pretty much every GPS on the market, and Garmin is his favorite. We also have an iQue and an old eMap. Since the 76 is just a little more up on the 60, the durability will be the same. We went up north a few weeks ago and took our 76 on 150 miles of ATV riding, and it held up amazingly, so I'm sure the 60 would do the same. I'm one of those people who misses things in plain sight, and every Garmin we've owned has been so user friendly that even I can use it! My friends have figured it out in a heartbeat, and you can't beat the surf antenna.
  16. We have the Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx and love it. It has a surf antenna so even under heavy tree coverage, you still have an awesome signal.
  17. I'm barely 5 feet, and was pretty upset by some caches high up, until my fellow cacher, and close friend, got an idea: I would sit, or stand, on her shoulders! I'm sure we make quite the sight!
  18. We use a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx. It's around $400, but it's super easy to use and has a surf antenna, so even under heavy tree cover, you'll get a great signal.
  19. For our first 5, we did not find them. We went home to find one close to home and dedicated ourselves to it. We ended up in the woods at 11:30 at night with flashlights looking up, when we should have been looking down. We found what we thought was a HARD find, when now, thinking back, it was super easy. I searched for one three times, and had to call my GeoDad for gloves, since I forgot mine. He came, looked under the bridge, said "here it is", pulled it out, and that was that.
  20. I'm having the same problem. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong. I have it set at my home coords. What else should I do?
  21. Great GPS, we have the 76CSx. We absolutely love it, and I'm sure you will too. It's so easy to use. We are pretty new at this too, and are about to hide our first cache. The best advice I got so far was from someone in The Netherlands. It was that there are a lot of people in this sport, so never walk alone. Happy Caching!
  22. Wow guys, thanks for all the advice! We think we found a spot, but we found it in the dark, so we are going back today to check it out. I found 3 waterproof containers, and had a blast covering them with camo duct tape last night If we find a spot that is not winter friendly, do we just remove it in the winter and wait till spring to place it again? I live in Northeastern Wisconsin and it snows like crazy here. Thanks again so much!!
  23. I'm about to place my first cache. I've read through everything and know all of that, but I was wondering if anyone has any other personal advice about placing them. Since it's my first, I don't want to make it too hard, but I don't want it easy, either. If that makes sense. Thanks in advance for the advice!
  24. Oshkosh cachers here. We just got into it too, and we're hooked as well!
