  1. Hi all, getting back into geocaching after some time away from it. I'm looking to upgrade my current GPS (Magellan Meridan Color) and have narrowed down to 3 choices: Delorme PN-20: Pluses....the included maps would be awesome, not having to pay extra for them, tho if I got the unit, I would likely use the included credit for either the color sat photos of my state or the 7.5 quads for my state. Garmin Vista HCX: small, lightweight, seems to do all I would need. Garmin 60CSX: a step up but is it really that better for the money than the Vista. Using it for the highway is not a concern as I am using a Garmin Nuvi 200 for that. What are your experiences: pros and cons about the 3 units? I'm planning on getting 2 of my nephews interested in geocaching and they seem exited about it. The way I have the three listed is the current order of preferablity for me, but depending on what I find out, any of the three may be the one. Other concerns: Battery life...the Magellan I use is a battery hog, would like something with more reasonable. Electronic compass-Altimeter...options I really do want in my unit Ease of transfering maps, info from the computer to the unit Thanks for any information you can offer Ellery
  2. What about Delorme's Topo USA® 5.0? The eastern region for me would include the US east region for about $50. How do they compare to 7.5 quad topos? I'm leaning to getting this set as opposed to Nat'l Geo's Virginia set for twice the $$.
  3. Hello all, well as a note of introduction, I'm just getting interested in geocaching/benchmarking. I'm in the process of getting my first gps (Meridian Color) and will be spending some time learning how to use it. In addition to geocaching, I plan to let my parents use it alot when they travel to visit my sisters. Unfortunately due to work, I'm not as available to drive them as I used to be and at their age (69, 78) I think they'd appreciate the guidance and security the GPS would offer them. I work in DC in broadcasting and my other hobbies are woodcarving, history, reading and old time radio programming. I dont have much free time during the week but on weekends I like to get out and keep myself occupied. Hope to stay around for awhile.
  4. Thanks for the advice guys . I think that is what I'm going to do in taking photos of the two sites documenting the changes and sending them in to Deb. I may also include documented account (newspaper article) about the move as additional material. I really appreciate the help and direction. Take care
  5. Hi all, I'm just getting into benchmarking/geocaching and in checking the lists of benchmarks for the area around zip code 23922, I noticed that one of the marks definitely does not exist. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=GW0188 This building (the old high school) was destroyed over 10, 15 years ago when Nottoway county consolidated the high schools in the area. It is now a community park. From the description, the benchmark was placed on the outside of the building. Couple of questions: Should I go ahead and log this as a mark destroyed? Should the NGS be notified about this (or is it not necessary?) Finally this benchmark has been moved: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=GW0189 Norfolk Southern wanted to destroy the old station. The residents of Burkeville raised funds to purchase and move the station. The station was moved approximately 2, 3 years ago to another location. THAT location was the site of the old high school. How should this be noted in the logs. Basically at the moment, for anyone trying to log these two: You would not find GW0188 as it does not exist. You would find GW0189 within a few feet from where GW0188 used to be. As a newbie, I'm not really sure how this is handled, so if this is discussed somewhere, please point me in the direction of the information. Thanks and good hunting!
  6. I've sent you email on the unit. I am interested if it is still available....
