  1. Hmm,, Anybody going caching at night in wooded areas should excercise prudence and caution.. and should learn some survival skills. I am an advocate of that and a practioner. (See my profile). Also, you should never go into the forested areas alone at night. You never know what you may encounter. Learn about what is out there to encounter... and not just the geocaches.. Always remember that fire will fend off animals.. except one, and that is man. Man is the most dangerous animal in the world. Always be aware of your surroundings.. even in the urban jungle. Women do this instinctively.. learn from them.. Just some thoughts on the subject. This forum space doesn't have enough room for all that a person alone, especially at night in the woods, should be aware of.
  2. Rockey.... What did the other guy do? What was he there for? If he was just there in general .. He may have just minded his own business.. Did you leave the site while you babysat the cache?
  3. Yes! that is what I wanted to do.. I had forgotten about that feature.. Thanks.. goes to less frustration..
  4. Hi, I am having some trouble getting an exact waypoint load to my GPS V. I usually will switch to off road nav. and then take it off the adherance to roads in the map guidance menu. I use the arrow to search for the lat.and long. coordinates and it is set to wgs 84. Anybody know what I am doing wrong? (or) should I first load the map CD with the waypoints and then download them to the GPS?
  5. I am curious to know about all the different forms of Geocaching. What kinds of organized events are there and the themes that those events take. Anybody have any thoughts on this subject? While I have an idea to geocache across the set of the 'Survivor' TV show just for fun, much like towards the end of the movie "Blazing Saddles" when they rode their horses across the sets of several other movies that were being made.. That would be a good way to get yourself on TV. But I am hesitant to actually do that because I don't know what the reaction to that would be.. Hmm.
  6. One of my other hobbies is Outdoor Survival. That hobby takes me out into the forests with almost to literally nothing carried with me. The user name OccidentalErrant .. is a combination of two words. Both words are adjectives with the Errant part that could be used as a noun. Since I like to wander around in the woods.. camping or (practicing survival).. I picked Errant and the other is because I am a westerner in the US. But then, Occidental has a much broader meaning than just the US geographical meaning I give it here and it fits as well with the traditional meaning to it. OccidentalErrant fits this mileau of Geocaching also.
  7. Thanks Sputnik.. More help than you can imagine... you and Alan 2..
  8. Thanks Alan2... Mine was doing the same spinning and reverse pointing... So, now I know where a cache I was looking for is.. and will go back and snatch it when no kids are around.. You have been more help than you may realize...
  9. GPS signals are line of sight to the satellite(s). Therefore, when you are under a canopy of trees that interferes with the signal... weakens it... and you will notice that your accuracy goes off. Mine has been off by 15 to 18 feet and that is under just a few trees in a city park. I used to use this GPS V in a courier business in Eastern Oregon as I needed to know where addresses were when the dispatcher would call me (on the road) to tell me to go pick something up in small towns out there. Well, I didn't have a problem with doing that as there are no trees out there for the most part. I am finding the same problem that you are when it comes to looking for caches in wooded areas. Garmin makes an extended attenna. As to the accuracy of it when you are in wooded areas I cannot attest to as I don't use it. Moot Point: You would have to attach the extended attenna to your body somewhere or hold it out at arms length... what good would that do unless you are in an open field or at the very top of a douglas fir.. so I don't use extentions in my geocaching activities. Unless somebody else has a better idea, I think we are all waiting for improvements in the technology here.
  10. Ah ha!!! I found the rules.. printed them out.. life is good... !!
  11. Well, now that I know what I might be looking for that makes it so much easier.. Thanks..
  12. If you can get a log into a pet tube... How many entries can you put on the log?
  13. I am either dum or ?? I can't seem to find the definitions of what a cache is on the GC web site. I saw it once... stumbled on it but can't remember which link it is at. Also, I don't remember seeing a definition of a micro cache on there when I did stumble onto that page. Help??? Yes, even I have questions..
  14. Soul not sole.. sorry... Yes, fish is brain food... and I can't see Faust walking around with no soles.. so I must have meant soul. Don't tell my retired English teacher dad..
  15. Oooppsss!! I mean I wasn't advocating disregard of existing rules..
  16. When I wrote that post about establishing a way to mark the cache site in an unobstrusive way I was thinking in the back of my mind ... using a padlock with instructions or coordinates written on the back... that is removable by the cache owner. I was advocating disregard of the existing rules of the game, but merely suggesting a standard method to illiminate destruction of public and/or private property. This is an open topic.. and I appreciate all input and ideas. I assume that you mean you want an idea to remove the 'graffitti' on an aluminum culvert on your land and not remove the culvert itself.. which would involve a backhoe. I would suggest a sand blaster for removing paint on an aluminum culvert.
  17. By not being easily removed,,, I mean that it can be easily removed but only by the hider of the cache..
  18. Would it be out of the question to come up with... (invent?) a method for displaying coordinates that we can all agree on as standard practice, that doesn't deface anything, is easily recognizable, is made of such a material that in itself cannot be vandalized, disfigured or tagged to obliterate the message on it or inadvertently removed? Thereby insuring that the message inferred is to those who are in the know about it and others would probably leave it alone... not knowing what it is??
  19. Hi, Well, I was looking for something that said rules of the game... but guidelines for placing.... et.al. will work too.. Today though, I have to get taxes ready and put in a garden in the back yard..
  20. Aaahh,, Here it is RK.. Like I have time to sit here in front of this computer and decide which identity crisis I am going to have.. So, I'll stick with the other avatar. Now, to go out and hide and seek.. Rules seem pretty simple, Weightman.. Thanks.
  21. I may go to heraldry ... if I can find one that isn't infringing on copyright..
  22. Hi Renegade Knight.. I like it better too.... but, that is an avatar called Faust Avatar. Faust, as you know, sold his sole to the devil for knowledge.. I haven't arrived at that crossroads yet.. lol.. I still have that icon.. and may use it some time later.. Right now, I am trying a few different ones.. attempting to define my true personality, which is what an avatar is supposed to do. I have been looking around the web for some unique ones.. I just discovered how to get the several that I had on the edit page deleted so I wouldn't take up a whole screenful of on the monitor.. Thanks for the info..
  23. I have been reading some of the posts that mention game rules and have excerpts from them... so I went looking on GC.com for them.. I want to place my first cache and did read the FAQ page.. But I can't seem to find where the actual rules of the game are written. Are they on another site? Doesn't do me any good to play the game if I don't know the rules.
  24. Aaahhh,, I was looking for a button that said 'delete image'... Duuuhhh... Thanks..
  25. Exactly the kind of activity that I wrote about in a post today in the Northwest forum. (Some) people doing what they think they can get away with.. Shame, shame!! Doesn't seem to put this sport in a good light for positive expansion of the sport. Now, the website has a bad name.. I don't know where this location is, but maybe some members should go out and try to clean it up as much as possible. Better yet, the guy who put it there.
