  1. Metroguide version 4 DOES autoroute. I know you have it on your computer. Do you have it on your GPS?
  2. Also, you can select a cache or waypoint, or any map point and have the gps street route you to it. In the case of a cache it will bring you as close as possible by road, then you can switch to offroad navigation to continue walking to the cache.
  3. Sorry, but I can't agree with that. I will take one model: Starts with the etrex legend: mapping gps with serial connection, monochrome Next, Legend C: color mapping, autorouting, USB connection Legend CX: Legend C with added expandable memory Legend HCX: Legend CX with twice the waypoint storage capacity, and a much better receiver And if you want a compass and barometer, the etrex vista followed the same evolutionary path. Same goes for the 60 and 76 series. This seems to me to be a very logical and progressive series of steps. I think it also shows how much the consumer likes the gps. If they didn't Garmin would scrap the design totally and come out with a totally new design, which I think Magellan does. Also, as far as the Triton goes, it seems like 90% of the posters here would be weary of buying it right away. Did that high percentage feel the same way about buying the new "H" series from Garmin. I think the numbers could be reversed. A totally new design does not mean a better product. To the contrary, continually adding features to an existing proven product seems to me to be a better route. If Magellan had added the new features to the existing Explorist series, I don't think consumers would shy away from the unit as much. Just my opinion.
  4. yeah in my opinion, if you don't have the extra maps it's just as well to save money and get a gps with no mapping at all...cause the basemap is practically useless.
  5. To answer your question, the HC is handsdown the winner. No comparison. It has a color screen, faster processor for redrawing maps, more features, much better antenna, USB connection for faster data transfer. And you can get it here ( http://www.tvnav.com/venturehc.htm )for $178 here including shipping. Or this one for $168 http://cgi.ebay.com/Garmin-eTrex-Venture-H...1QQcmdZViewItem And I bet others can chime in with cheaper prices.
  6. Nope. Topo Canada does autoroute, but metroguide 7 does not autoroute without some work. You can't just enable it. But Topo Canada does autoroute. The data source for the Topo Canada maps are pretty old, and some of the roads may not exist on the maps. That would cause the gps to continue recalculating. Which map was actually displayed at the time this happened?
  7. Hey princess. You should return it and look on ebay for a Legend C. It's way ahead of the Legend and the Explorist 210, and you WILL get it for $150.
  8. I've pm'd you. I had some computer trouble so I am not sure it went through, so i will send it again. If it's there twice, my apologies!!
  9. Are you zoomed out to far? If so, it may be updating but the scale is so small that it isn't noticeable. Go to the satellite page and see if the coordinates are changing while you are walking...or trip page and see if moving time is ticking off while you are walking. That being said, I have seen that happen on a Legend CX. Usually a power off/on fixes it. Of if you leave it on it will fix itself. I have seen the problem ONLY WHEN I AM NAVIGATING A ROUTE. And only a couple of times.
  10. Metroguide v7 does not autoroute, unless you have manipulated it somehow. If you haven't manipulated it to autoroute, then your GPS could be using the basemap to calculate the route, which could explain the problem due to lack of detail and accuracy in the basemap.
  11. Let me know if it works. If not, we'll figure something. Also, if you want, you can send me one of your files to see if I can open it in mapsource. That will tell me if you are saving the file in the proper format. I'll PM you my email address.
  12. Yep. It indicates that the satellites are receiving WAAS corrections and these corrections are being sent to your GPS. If you disable WAAS on your GPS you won't see the D's. They may hang around for a couple of minutes but they'll disappear eventually.
  13. Atta boy Fizz...i believe that you got the best deal on a gps that anyone here has had in quite awhile. I checked our local walmart here last night and they are selling for $275 plus tax. A local Canadian Tire store is selling them for $320 plus tax. Yes, some people really pay that much for the etrex legend cx. People who don't shop ebay, or some other online source don't usually get the deals that others do. And yours is one heckuva deal!! P.S. check the software version on the GPS. If it's lower than 2.6, the firmware needs to be updated. If it's version 2.7 you should revert back to 2.6 in my opinion. If read some other posts here you'll see why. Here's a link to the Garmin firmware versions: MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE!! Don't update from the Garmin website or you get version 2.7 http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/etrex/legend/
  14. Dogwalker is exactly correct. Do what he says, and this as well: Load the Mapsource program on both computers and check for updates. Click Help, Check for software updates. This is not an update to the mapping programs, but to Mapsource itself. I'm inclined to think that the guts of the mapsource program on each computer is a different version. After doing the update on both I believe he will be able to load your tracks. Or perhaps only he needs to update. You may already have the latest version. Either way, the update will let you know.
  15. Yes, you can do that if you can get the right maps. I have used OziExplorer in this manner. I use topo canada maps and connect the gps to the laptop. You cannot however load these particular maps to the gps but otherwise works perfectly. It is however a little difficult with initial setup and importing of maps. I imagine that others here will offer other, perhaps better, solutions to your question. I only have the topo maps for Newfoundland. I notice you are in ontario. Too bad I don't have those maps or I'd send them to you on CD. The maps I have are the actual topo maps like you would buy at any forestry station. I guess they were scanned as raster maps or something like that.
  16. Thanks for that little notice. I have enough GPS's as it is, but I couldn't pass up that deal. According to the website there was ONE left in St. John's, so I went and picked it up last night. $149.99 Canadian plus tax. That's a good deal on a Legend CX. Explaining that purchase to the wife ain't gonna be easy!!!
  17. Great, thanks. I've read the #3 problem, so I'm a little familiar with that. I guess that will be fixed in a future firmware update. Again, thanks, exactly the answer I was hoping for!! Oh, and the power on trouble. Is that specifice to the vista hcx i wonder? I guess if it's not related to the electronic compass then it could arise in the legend as well.
  18. Just one little bump to see if there's any input.
  19. The boy is correct!! They are there for $150 !!!
  20. WHAT!!! I am not sure that I understand what you are saying correctly, so forgive me if I'm wrong. But, if you are saying what I think you are saying, then even if you used a handheld compass for years, you used it wrong. You don't set the compass at zero degrees and then sight along the magnetic bearing number. You set the compass at the magnetic bearing number and sight along the center of the compass. MUCH easier to follow the bearing. Again, perhaps the wording of your post is confusing me, and perhaps you are saying the exact thing I am!!
  21. $150 Canadian is a super deal. GET IT !! The Legend C without the X (expandable memory) is still fetching that price even when NOT new. And let me know where you came across this deal!!!
  22. I'm in the same situation, and from what people have been telling me, the Garmin Nuvi is a good choice. I posted this same question a few days ago and only got 2 responses. Hopefully yours will generate more response.
