  1. I enquired about the batteries again whilst placing an order yesterday morning. This time the reply was "They have arrived.". However, they hadn't been entered into the computer yet and will be dispatched as soon as that had been done. I was assured they would be forwarded yesterday. Oddly enough, I don't know why they couldn't simply put them with the equipment I ordered at the same time, as that order arrived by same day courier less the long awaited batteries. In theory they will be here on Monday, and I will forward them on Monday afternoon.
  2. Thanks for that. Doesn't look like I'll get the chance this weekend, another challenge is more likely. I'm sure that will be helpfull when I find the time
  3. Well done Nandor, This is much better than the existing Buxleys site. I'm sure it will be a lot of use, Thanks
  4. Hmm, I've just printed out Island rock in the last couple of days and been considering doing that one. I suppose I should look at the fullers timetable and work out how I can fit that in. It would be good to be able to acheive it in a daytrip. Even better if I could find the Coastal cache on the same day. Might have to go visit a friend in Whangarei for a couple of days too, oh and maybe have a catchup visit with another mate in Kaikohe Mind you it sounds like my workload is about to pick up again. Introducing a friend to geocaching tommorrow all going well, I need to do a maintenance visit to Vanishing River, so will let him hunt it, and then possibly Kiwi Xmas Tree and Braemar Springs as well. In any case, the additional activity is all good

  6. Not a problem Tony, when they turn up . I read somewhere the best external aerial was called a mighty mouse or something similar, but it required a +5V feed up the coax to power it's internal amplifier, apparently not many GPS units could supply the feed. I also recall people were pairing it with a lowranch GPS100 or similar. It was a while ago that I read it though, and it's just from memory. Did price the GPS at the time though, Ouch is all I'll say (I might buy one after I win 1st division lotto )

  8. Good to see some healthy rivalry from TeamHunterGatherer and Ariwa. Don't forget guys, you could always have a contest to see who can put in the most caches too

  10. Thanks Nick, once again I used to much haste in one of my "quick looks" and don't find what I'm looking for. Mind you, I could just be lazy relying on someone like you to do the hard work for me . I feel validated now that my comments were justified, I'm sure glad I'm not paying for that kind of hardware, let alone the other costs involved, all so we can enjoy our hobby. I personally feel the US$30.00 per annum is a very reasonable fee. In any case, at this point in time you can enjoy this sport without paying any fee's and it appears this will remain the case for the immediate future at least. However, people do have the option when placing caches to restrict access to members only. I'm not aware of any such caches in NZ yet, but you just don't know what the future will bring. I personally won't place any member only caches, and I suspect most NZ Geocachers will feel the same way, but I might change my opinion if I get a few plundered (I have one to check on at this stage). For those of you who have paid your Charter Membership subscription, I thank you for your contribution towards our sport, you are helping make this sport accessable for everyone, and that is why I'm more than happy to pay it myself

  12. As far as I know Jeremy has resigned from the position he held when he started Geocaching.com and is now doing the geocaching website full time. He said very little when he changed to the charter membership system, but I'm fairly certain he is now only doing geocaching support full time. He had tried to run geocaching.com on a donation basis but it wasn't working. For some reason when I was looking breifly a few minutes ago I was unable to find a lot of the postings about the changes to a charter membership system, it's almost like they were deleted! I hope not! The servers hosting the geocaching site must be fairly large, with a rather quick connection into the web, after all, there are now a huge number of members. I imagine his costs for the web hosting alone would be more than an average mans salary these days. I don't think it's going to be neccessary for anyone to start up our own site just yet (and hopefully it never will), but it is reassuring to know that we have the domain name secured and people prepared to help. I'm fairly confident between Gav, Nick & Steve that if worse comes to worse our sport can continue. Thanks guys

  14. Well, I'm not to happy with my digital camera after yesterdays event's, something I'll be careful of in the future. My camera has a Macro Mode, which alters the focal length of the lense to allow really close photos. Somehow the Macro switch got knocked (In my pack ), and it sat halfway between the normal and macro setting. I never noticed as the LCD screen isn't high enough resolution, and took a large number of very blurry pictures. I never noticed until I downloaded a whole days worth of blurry pictures! Darmit, all the pictures of a new cache that isn't pleasant to get to (and the resulting blisters) for blurry pictures, dadgum! I'll be checking that switch regularly in the future. Oh well, live and learn!

  16. Thanks Nick. In true form, it's time to start putting more caches in. Watch out for Christophers wet feet, more to follow

  18. I queried those batteries when placing an order this morning. They were apparently out of stock with my suppliers supplier and are expected to arrive mid to late this week. Sorry about the delay guys

  22. Well, an interesting link has been provided to me re this camera by a NZ Geocacher. I was looking mainly for sample pictures on the net, technical specifications of the imaging sensor were also of interest. I didn't pay a lot of attention to detail about the cameras manufacturer or feedback from customers. If anyone else is interested, here's the link I was provided with. I'm still keen to see some samples taken locally though The link

  24. Well, that camera sure looks reasonable. I want to see sample pictures please. Interesting no-one seems to provide any that I could find with a quick look. I suspect it's imaging sensor is CMOS not CCD hence the low price (and usually low quality pics), someone please prove me wrong! CMOS are ok in good lighting, but are lousy in low light conditions, the automatic flash might compensate for this, but I'm keen to see a picture of a cache taken under bush canopy with the lower light level there. If it takes good pictures, then I'd seriously consider buying one to keep in my pack all the time. I look forward to feedback from someone with their hands on one of these. Demo pics to tgsnoopy at xtra dot co dot nz please
