  1. Yes, that's a great help when memory space in the GPS unit is a bit restricted. Which it usually is, of course...
  2. Let's hope that helps. You don't want to be using EasyGPS if at all possible, because... 1) It's horrible, 2) er... 3) that's a good enough reason on its own.
  3. Congratulations to McDehack on getting 100... ... which is in the other thread, but well done him, anyway...
  4. Additional information... Q: How do I customise the waypoint symbols? Garmin's answer: We're not telling you . Correct answer: The icons are stored (on an XP machine) in C:\My Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols. They are 16x16 pixels and can be edited with any decent graphics software that can save as .bmp format.
  5. For those who use it, but didn't know about it... Garmin have recently (12/11/04) made available a beta-release update to Mapsource. The version number is 6.5b, and is accompanied by the usual disclaimers and caveats. There seem to be a large number of changes but, for Geocaching, the most important ones are: Can import GPX files directly. Previous versions needed a third-party conversion utility. User-definable waypoint icons. Some issues related to routing have been fixed (and about time), but the "find address" facility is still complete rubbish. Looks like a useful step forward, though. Link to the download page is HERE Hth
  6. Congratulations to Mike for standing fast and getting the pic, when in mortal danger of being crushed by the unco-ordinated, overfed young galoot, careering down towards him. (Meanwhile...) Congratulations to Donnacha on his escape from mortal danger in an Irish hospital, and best wishes for a full recovery, from myself and all the other Guinness shareholders. (And the local geocaching community.) Congratulations to me for not realising that this isn't the congratulations thread, until it was too late. - Wlw.
  7. Quite correct - but how much difference does that make? Like Pharisee, I recently visited a site where the churned morass of hoofprints and tyre-tracks led right past a six-foot sign which read: "Pony Trekking and Cycling not permitted in the Forest." The title of this topic... THAT might make a difference.
  8. Ye big culchie fool - go empty the water out of all your caches, and do something useful for a change...
  9. I'm slightly surprised that FOF even bothers to read the stuff posted here by that individual. Nobody else does...
  10. Take more water with it in future, Bryan...
  11. And how do you know which plants are "rare" and which may be ripped up, regardless? Could you tell the difference between a Red Grouse and the much rarer Black Grouse - given only a glimpse of a female in the heather? I couldn't - and I'm supposed to be an expert. When walkers approach, a Lapwing can move her brood out of the way, usually without even being seen - but how slowly should you ride your mountain bike, to give the bird a similar chance? To use the countryside "responsibly", you need to know what's going on there - and most people don't. (Edit to remove an unreasonable number of other examples.)
  12. The Caching of the Shrew - William Shakespeare Dramatis Personae: ROMEO, A young nobleman OZADE, His faithful retainer LACTODORUM, The Duke of Venice CLARKSON, A peripatetic scribe ROOKIO, DONNACHIO, KLAUSIO, Hibernian geocachers much given to drink Scene XIV: A forest outside the city. Enter ROMEO & OZADE Romeo : I'faith these multis are the very pants that hasteneth us from one place to t'other. Nor yet hath we but found a single item in this cursed wood - if wood it be and not some web of witchcraft. Ozade: Marry Sir, if curse it be then my poor garmin yet is cursed of all, Beneath these leaves no sight of sky has he, nor pointer steady on the chosen route. Thy woven doublet's sore with bramble torn and falling down yon bank thy knees were skin't, I beg thee Sir - wilt not decrypt the hint? Rom: Would that I could'st for now I would be hence, but yet I know not where the meaning lies. 'Tis but a single character, after the manner of those ancient Greeks... (Enter CLARKSON): Could it be an Alpha, Romeo? Romeo: The devil dadgum thee black, thou cream-faced loon! Clarkson: Suiteth yourselves. But soft - here comes a motley indeed! (Exits) (Enter ROOKIO et al, singing) "... do the Shake 'n Vac and putteth the freshness back..." Ozade: Good travellers, where is thy haste this evening. Doth cache, perhance? Donnachio: Not we! Our batteries are spent this hour and more, So now we seek some welcome hostlery, to there repose and get ourselves a Guinness, ere they close. Klausio: 'Tis a sore trial indeed, bejaysus, that the stout be within and we without! Rookio: Forsooth and begob, we are without stout indeed! Kla: 'Twere better far, if the Guinness were in us! (Enter LACTODORUM, in his robes of office) That's enough second-rate Elizabethan humour. Move along there. Romeo: Lo, in this drear and fearful wood I lie bereft Wherein no cache nor clue-thing can be found, As evening falls, all creatures steal away, and in their leafy bowers rest awhile, No marker leaps to meet my weary gaze, nor... Lac: He does go on a bit, doesn't he? Oza: Nay, noble Sir - 'tis his soliloquy. Rom: ... nor even a BAFTA last year for Learning all this stuff. Fie on't! And sod this for a game of halberdiers. If The cache cannot be found, then all must end in tears. Lac: Which cache are you looking for, anyway? Oza: 'Tis GCL4C7 - behold I have the sheets here printed nice By Master Caxton's wondrous new procedure - but naught in colour for That hasn't been invented, yet. LAC: Oh, that one's been archived since last week - it was destroyed by a Tigger at the beginning of this thread... (Exeunt)
  13. They should contain the same data. The self-extractor might know the proper location for the offline cache, and put the files there automagically, but I can't be sure. At the time I was doing this, it all had to figured out from first principles and, initially, I had the files in the wrong directory so it didn't work.
  14. When making this distribution on CD, you will also need to get the 1.2d patch, which is HERE The full installation of 1.2c must be done, then the above patch applied.
  15. Yes - and a close eye on the WorldWind homepage for any future patches and upgrades, as the thing is very much a "work in progress." That comment related only to the off-site mirrors which were set up as described. In "proper" operation, WW only goes to download the data it needs to display the area selected, with the layers chosen. Depending on how far you zoom in, detailed 'tiles' will be fetched from the servers as they are required. The implications of this are: if you have WW on CD - and are only interested in a small area of land surface - it could be possible to use this with a dial-up connection (and a bit of patience.) If on the other hand, you want to roam all over the place, with maximum resolution, then a (very) high bandwidth link to the net is pretty much essential.
  16. No. The image (and elevation) data is cached locally on your HDD, so that a big net session isn't necessary each time you want to view an area. During the period when the WW servers were overloaded, some nice people put up mirror sites with zipped files of the data. One of these was for part of the UK, so I downloaded it. Since then, this cache has grown to nearly 1.5Gb (as of this morning.) Many thanks to the hundreds of folk who e-mailed in, pointing out my typing error.
  17. Jings - it's worse than I thought... Sample image as requested by Bill.... HERE Loch Lomond and the Trossachs 800x600
  18. Right. It's good news and bad news... The good news is: I have the program, and about 1/3 of the British Isles cache files on disk. (JPL pansharpened false-color and visible light.) The bad news is: One CD won't do it - the whole shooting match at the moment totals 1.33Mb...
  19. I've been using this for some time now, and have labelled images on a couple of my cache pages. The server access problem is more or less sorted out, and only seems to be an issue during peak (USA time) periods. The "lakes that run uphill", don't. This effect is seen when Worldwind is asked to exaggerate the vertical scale, and has to start interpolating points to do so. Results for Ireland are a bit mixed: there are a number of areas which have NO LandSat7 images without cloud cover - even after three years...
  20. I would agree also - if I thought about it at all. BUT... perhaps "BlueDeuce" is right - keep at least some kind of geocaching element, else all is chaos and mayhem.
  21. Just purged my browser cache and accessed the site again. Everything loaded correctly. The images have a mod date of 30/11, so they seem to be the correct ones. A shot in the dark: if the site is hosted on a UNIX machine (as it should be check the file and directory permissions, in case they are set to something bonkers.
  22. Me neither. But you must be getting close to your own 300 as well, so well done.
  23. I just tried this and it updated immediately. Changing the 'Profile' image and 'Avatar' image are two seperate procedures, so perhaps you missed a step somewhere.
