  1. The easiest way is to use GSAK and export a CSV (comma separated value) file and then do <Data><Import data wizard...> to bring in your *.csv file. You can also do *.txt, *.tab, and *.asc imports. What's even a step up from this is to bring your gpx file from Pocket Queries into GSAK, and then follow these directions. Totally great! Just follow his directions and wait for the program to finish importing all of the caches before resuming computer use.
  2. This may be of some help to you. I would imagine that the 400 and 500 use the same battery. Good Luck.
  3. Good information on Geocaching with Kids.
  4. Well, here is a temporary work around until GC.com does something: RSS feed for new Oregon caches that I built. Here's hoping that the web masters will take this lead
  5. I’m not sure about the Meridian Gold, but when I upgraded my Magellan SporTrak Map, it was like night and day. It didn’t change my base map (as that is stored in ROM), but it DID enhance what I saw on my GPSr screen. Now I have street-level maps, as well as dirt roads in National Forests, etc. Unfortunately, as soon as the software is released, it’s out of date; but it is still worth the price of admission! The best feature is being able to load these detailed street-level maps by “region” when I travel. With your GPSr, you can load a lot of extra maps on a memory card which is a great feature. Also, I saw increased performance/features when I flashed my GPSr with the latest firmware from Magellan's site. Check on e-bay for a copy of the software. I saved a lot of money going this route, rather than buying it in the store.
  6. GSAK is a very powerful and well supported program. It kind of depends on what you are trying to do. If you just want to upload waypoints to your GPSr, then maybe Easy GPS is an easier program to use (although I prefer GSAK for this). What types of problems are you running into? What type of GPSr are you using? I'm sure anyone that uses GSAK could assist. The more you play with it the easier it becomes, and the more features you'll discover. For example, I love the macro feature and then importing filtered GSAK databases onto my GPSr; so I don't have to load caches I'm not interested in finding at that time.
  7. I thought only in Oregon did it rain like that...guess I'll have to enjoy the upcoming weather! Cheers
  8. Try [tools], [options], and make sure [RegEx] is set to your unique geocache name. Also make sure you have the latest revsion of GSAK (I think it's 6.6.0 build 50), and that your gpx file is being built correctly. Good luck.
  9. I have an old Hewlett Packard 320LX (hand-held PC) running Windows CE v. 2.0 with 4.0MB RAM and a 48MB CF card installed. What, if anything can I use (like cache mate) to go paperless on this machine, or should I just buy a cheap Palm on e-Bay? I know, I know, it's OLD, but it is free and I'd like to use it. I have been successful in loading MS-pocket streets, but it's clunky for cache management. I'm looking for more of a database program to run on the hand-held device. I'm a GC premium member running PQ's and am a registered user of GSAK 6.6.0 builds 50. Thanks to all! [Reposted from World Wide Forum without a reply]
  10. I always have one of these, as well as a multi-tool. When I head out into the bear/cougar area, I carry pepper spray and as a last resort one of these. However, I don't have a CCP so I just holster it in plain site !
  11. I like Ziggy Crew's idea. I'd only add this feature to TB's as well.

  13. Congratulations on joining the geo-ranks. This truly is a family sport/hobby/recreation that young and old enjoy. First and foremost, become familiar with your GPSr. You need to be comfortable with entering/uploading coordinates into the receiver’s waypoint database and creating a “GOTO” to that waypoint. Practice with it so you can perform this in the field. It’s also helpful to know how to “mark” your current spot so you can find your way home. Using the “backtrack” feature of the GPSr can be critical out in the woods (or a Walmart parking lot). Second (as stated before), choose easy caches 1/1 [difficulty/terrain], and regular or large caches. These types of caches are easier to find, and usually have better SWAG in them for your son to rummage through--this keeps the kids happy and excited. Try looking for newer caches as they are typically in better condition than caches that have weathered the winter. Finally, be prepared! Like the Boy Scouts motto, you need to be prepared when you venture outside. Bring food and drinks in your geo-mobile, extra batteries, hints to the caches or printouts, proper clothing, a map or knowledge of the area, etc (and keep it with you). We wouldn’t want to read about a geo-casualty…and HAVE FUN!
  14. Yes...you can do a full installation at the time of setup. Then you don't need the CD each time you run the program. This is a really useful feature if you have a laptop and a desktop. Hope THIS helps.
  15. Hi, I would like to request a feed for the Northwest. Also, I put a request in on April 26th on the GC website forum, but have not received any replies for creating RSS feeds that spawn from PQ's or new listings. Please see the original post here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=130822 Any idea's on the feasibility of doing this? Thanks, and keep up the good work. We love the content changes so far.
  16. This might not be a good thing. Some people log finds well after the find date for many reasons. Sometimes up to a year later. I agree that "locking" an archived cache from being logged as "found" is a BAD idea. Personally I've found, and subsequently, logged two caches that were archived by the owner. Apparently they had gone unfound (and logged as DNF) for some time. The owners just archived them without checking on them or removing them.
  17. Congratulations on trying geocaching! We started caching with a Magellan 2000 (lesser quality than yours) that I bought for $20.00 at a garage sale. We found our first 50+ caches with it and found it to be pretty accurate; as long as you set up the GPSr correctly. Go to page 52 of the manual. It will tell you how to select the correct LAT/LON coordinates. I used WGS84 datum and DEG/MIN.MMM which will give you accuracy to 3 decimal places. Good luck with your new hobby.
  18. Hi, I have a SporTrak Map and purchased a Belkin USB-Serial Adapter (F5U109) at Staples (open product). It works perfectly in my desktop or my laptop. Product information can be found here: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage...roduct_Id=91042 Try e-bay for a deal: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?f...&satitle=F5U109 Just follow the adapter installation process and you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck
  19. Make sure your GPSr has NMEA turned "on" (v 2.1 GSA as an example) and the baud rate and COM port on your GPSr matches your GSAK settings. Some receivers reset to NMEA "off" if the batteries completely die or if it's brand new.
  20. I have not found any information on this topic yet. It would be helpful if gc.com could publish an RSS or XML feed for the "Newest Caches" by state where users could subscribe and have them downloaded into an aggregator. The feed could be limited to the first newest 25 caches and be a feature reserved for Premium Members only...just a thought. Thanks
  21. I recently picked up a Texas Geocoin in Newport, Oregon and am unable to log the coin at: http://www.txgeocoins.com Can someone give me any information as to what happened to the Web site and/or how to log the coin? I'll keep checking the site, but if I don't hear anything back, I'll just move it along and hope for the best. Thanks in advance, Dude/Sweet
