  1. The OP isn't the only one wanting something like this What I'm struggling with is my PDA uses a USB connection, and my GPSr uses a RS-232 connection. Now, if only I can know for sure if my USB to RS-232 cable will take a USB to USB (F-F) adapter so I can string this whole mess together Maybe this site will have some helful information?
  2. What Operating System are you using? Integrated mouse and keyboard? What information can you give about the laptop's port settings? You could always buy a USB sync cable off of e-bay for cheap. Need more info to diagnose the problem.
  3. sbell111, Where do you get Sunrise and Cache Log Book? I use Plucker's desktop and am not totally thrilled with it. Thanks
  4. An inexpensive Palm OS device is the way to go. My Dad just gave me a Handspring Visor Deluxe with 8MB of RAM and it works great with Cachemate. Its memory is upgradeable via the springboard expansion slot (they also have Magellan GPSr units that plugs into this port selling on E-bay for about $40.00 with maps. Before my Dad gave me this unit, I was watching Visor's on E-bay sell for ~$20.00 with shipping (used, but perfect) with a leather case and USB docking station. I'd recommend at least 8MB of RAM. Color would be nice, but you'll pay more for it and the screens can washout in direct sunlight. A lot of cachers really love the Palm IIIxe (similar to the Handspring Deluxe). Just be sure that your Palm OS is at least 3.0 or greater. The new version of Cachemate won't work with anything less. BTW, spend the $8.00 to register Cachemate, it is WELL worth the investment. You may also consider giving GSAK a try. It is a fantastic database program for sorting caches before you go for them. Ask anyone in the forums...everyone raves about GSAK! Here's an example...
  5. That's a smok'in deal! I'll take the other one for that price. I've been using mine for about two years and have been really pleased with it. When you get the unit, make sure you have the current firmware installed (5.34) as you'll get additional maps/features. I'd also look on e-bay for Magellan MapSend Streets and Destinations USA (v. 4.00f ) or the Magellan MapSend Topo for the US (NOT 3D) v. 4.20D. You'll really want one of these software packages to load "detailed" street level maps as the base map is pretty worthless. I've found the SporTrak Map unit to be very easy to operate and locate caches with. Some complain about the lack of USB connectivity, but you can buy a serial to USB adapter for cheap. I download up to 500 waypoints from GSAK in seconds to my GPSr. Loading 5MB regions from the MapSend software is slow, but I don't do that very often. Basically you got a great deal...I paid about $100 more two years ago! Congratulations and enjoy your new toy.
  6. No need for the CD in the drive for MapSend Streets and Destinations USA v. 4.00f This is the only version that I can report on.
  7. Well, I wouldn't give up yet. I have an older Magellan and purchased the Magellan MapSend S&D off of e-bay for about $30. What I did was create a "region" in the software, and then uploaded that region to the GPSr. Doing so will greatly enhance your street level mapping capabilities (although there are still errors). If I want to locate an address, I push the "goto" button; highlight the new region that I uploaded; select "Address"; key in the address. Then I find the house just like a cache. Now, this isn't a perfect solution because the software was out of date the second it was created, but it works well enough to find most streets/addresses. Good luck.
  8. The answer to this question is in this movie...

  10. Hi All, Sorry if this has been covered before, but my search for "Plucker" returned throngs of pages to sort through and this problem is giving me a HUGE headache. Problem: I have a Handspring Visor Deluxe running Palm OS 3.1H3 and keep receiving the following error while trying to read the Plucker v. 1.8 manual: Fatal Error ScrDriverNew.c,Line:500, Invalid Params The only option presented is a [RESET] button...which of course, resets the PDA. Anyone have some ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.
  11. My list of FTF's is on my user page. I use that list as a personal account of fun memories I've had along the way; in the same way that I keep track of my "milestone" caches. It is in no way meant to gloat or belittle other cachers. What good would ever come of that? I never really thought about using bookmarks as a way of keeping track of FTF's. But I guess if you were worried about offending someone, you could always make it a "private" list.
  12. Did you go here? Maybe the coin was never activated or is not trackable. If you are still having trouble with it, try sending a message to the owner of the coin. I'm sure they would be very helpful. Added link to this thread.
  13. How about this...what if there was a way for GC.com to keep track. They already know our home coordinates. They know which caches we've logged. They even know in what order we've logged them. There should be an easy way to enable a [track] prior to logging caches (i.e. a checkbox) and then create a map similar to the one's you've seen for TB's. I don't know all of the technicalities, but I'm sure there is a smart coder that could implement that.
  14. I had a standard PQ in my list that was not checked, but I wanted it to run so I could have fresh data. I checked the box for today, the PQ posted a time that it was run (turned to bold), but I didn't get the e-mail. I had only had two PQ's run before that so I wasn't over my limit. I'm not sure if by attempting to run it in this manner caused any problems. Well, it all worked out for the best because I used data from a few days ago, and managed to go 3/3 on a nice country drive in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.
  15. My setup: Magellan SporTrak Map (serial cable direct connect) WinXP SP2 COMM 1 - 115,200 bps 8 bits/no parity/1 stop/no flow control GSAK settings: GSAK ver. 6.6.1 build 30 Magellan (from drop down) COM 1 115,200 500 Waypoints Check your BIOS setting for the COMM ports and make sure they match OS settings. Are you using a serial-usb converter? If so make sure you have the latest USB drivers installed (reboot afterwards). Good tip on clearing GPSr memory while transferrring data. Check the GSAK forums too.
  16. What type of coin is it? I know that there has been some trouble logging certain types of coins and GC.com is working on fixing the errors.
  17. Confucius' Cat is correct about Disney banning regular cache's within the park; however, a new hobby came from that Disney Benchmarks.
  18. A lot of cachers use Cachemate installed on their handheld unit. It only costs $8.00 to buy for either Palm OS 3.0 (or greater ) or Pocket PC. You can download a limited functionality trial copy here. It works great and is well worth the money to register your copy. Also I use GSAK to organize my cache database and export in PDB (Palm Data Base) file. GSAK is a free download, but registering your copy for $20.00 adds functionality as well as removes the nag screen. Plus Clyde gives really good support and frequent updates for free.
  19. With MS-S&T 2K5, I believe that the default coordinate system is set up for Decimal Degrees (DD). You can change how the software represents coordinates by clicking <TOOLS>, <OPTIONS>, and then setting the UNITS the same as your Magellan. Streets and Trips however doesn't have the accuracy as your GPSr, but still should be accurate enough to help you navigate towards a cache, and then let your GPSr guide you the rest of the way. I use GSAK to dump in my downloaded Pocket Queries as a gpx file. Then I export from GSAK to a Streets and Trips readable file (CSV). You can then do a Data, Import, in S&T to place all of your waypoints. These will appear on the map as a pushpin (by default), but can be changed manually, or automatically with macros and a program. If you want more info, send me a message. I've set my S&T options as follows: Miles (selected); N/S/E/W (selected); Degrees/Minutes/Seconds (selected). The sample in the dialog box then shows: 46°41'14"N 123°43'46"W (note the difference). To do coordinate conversions, you can go here (among other places). Good luck and enjoy!
  20. Don't be too sure that this stuff doesn't happen...check out this TB I found that was spawned from similar activity.
