  1. Sure.... Just grab the Travel bug and log it out on line.

Don't even think of taking that travel bug without leaving one in its place. :anicute:

    I agree with VK.

    Or do I? :)

I don't... How is a person supposed to start? what if a person HAS NO TBs in his/her possesion? What then???

What if you just got one from the last cache but it's only 1000 ft away? is that travelling? isn't it up to the individual as long as they're not hording them? But I digress, or do I?

  2. ...

    ...

Each day for a week have your GPS navigate you to those coords just as if you were finding an unknown geocache.

this is where i'd have to abort that experiment. occasionally i can get to a spot where my GPS tells me <1 meters distance, but a few seconds later it will tell me that it's 2 or 3 meters away (or even more). so i could never pinpoint a specific location that my GPS considered to be "the spot".

Yes, but what is needed is more people to understand that their GPSr is not that acurate and to find a way to create a better GPS point when placing a cache. Here is where it gets interesting. If you performed this same kind of exersize on caches you are placing then the coords might be a touch more accurate.

Here's what I do. I set the GPSr tracking on with a new track, Then I leave the unit in place at the cache location for at least one hour. I do this on at least two different days and at different times. Then I use an average of the sets of readings as my coords that I post. I've only placed three caches, and only one is currnetly active, but that will change really soon. My goal is to have ten active within 10 miles of home.

    thanks

    Ken

  3. I love the logs where they come right out and say they didn't find it:

    March 28 by Itried,really! (5 found)

The trip in was super muddy. I think this one has been muggled. I found the location where I think it should be but it was empty. Bummer :-(

It's a fantastic location. I think it's also a popular hang out for locals. We gathered as much trash as we could. I'm almost positive we found the original location and will check with the owner to double check.

Maybe there should be a 'ghost smiley' icon for finding the location where you think it should have been ?

I like the ghost idea. but as a counterpoint, I recently found what I thought was the "original location" but IT was wrong and the cache [a micro and part 1 of a multi] was right where it belonged. That's part of the fun. finally finding it after failed attempts is cool. however, if I go out and seek a cache, I'd like there to at least be hints that "help" I don't want "it's one the third tree, 4 ft off the ground in a squirell hole..." but how about. The hole hunt can be like hunting acorns, but not those on the ground. Just hang around long enough and maybe the critters will show you their stash."

On another note, I most often wonder about poeple that post

;) on Blah, soandso found "caching is easy"

    TFTC

and that's all? no decription of their hunt, their day, their shoe size??? really??? did they really find this, or just saw that it was a cache and figured, "Hey, I was in that state once, I'll post some finds there...."

  4. Then follow with pure alcohol.
Have been looking for a "retail" source for anhydrous isopropanol for some time now. Seems like mail order through Fisher Scientific or similar is the only option. Minimum of $78/liter + shipping. Got a better source? I really don't NEED sub-micron filtration.

First thing is immediate removal of batteries. Second is to open it up. but why introduce any more foreign materials? I say, unless it was saltwater or brackish water;

open it up, shake out any exsess water, dab as dry as possible, lay it out to dry in a warm dry place [not over 120deg. and leave it for 48 to 72 hours. then put it all back together and try it out.

Why not dump more stuff on it? because it can get between the display or other places. Minimal moisture contact IMO is better than douching... ;)

    Thanks

  5. anyone have experience with the jensen nvx200. just got one and was looking for more info.

seems to have the telealtas maps

I bought one on Friday. I don't know which maps it has, but it seems to compare well with the Garmin Nuvi200 or the tomtom go 1. :P

But since it was on sale for $117.99, and I really didn't have another $100 to spend on one those others, I went ahead and got it.

I've already been using it and I do have one piece of info... The mount IS flexible, although it's very stiff and I thought I might break it, it will flex. Also, the suction cup is really strong.

I will admit that some of the routes are unusual and it does have two failings.

    1. can't save routes. [that I know of]

    2. Routes don't have enough options. [EG: road avoidance rather then preference.]

Still, it's cool! and my GPS V was starting to have a blank screen after being left on in the car for days and days. <_<

EDIT: OH yeah. It's really a PDA with Windows CE operating system. Stylus and all! also Active sync and the manual are on the included CD!

EDIT: I didn't absolutely love this unit, so I bought a Garmin Nuvi200. That one I disliked for other reasons, so I took both of those back and bought a Navigon 2100. So far, I think it's a much better unit then the others.

Why? well, it's got text to speach, it has many options not found in the other two, of not found in one of the others. The only things I miss from the others are customizable cars and POIloader on the garmin, and voices on the jensen...

  7. Ok - here's some more info...

It's based on Audiovox [i guess they bought Jensen]

    2. it's a good idea to exit the gps [audiovox navigator] and configure the settings. You can align the touchscreen, set the date and time and change the language.

    3. I set my home location wrong and had to actually read the manual to find a way to edit it.

here's how: From the cockpit tap 'menu' then 'main'

once in the main menu tap 'settings' then 'general'

    Now tap 'Set Favorite Destinations'

There you can change the name of the two favs and their location [change address]

Since all gps maps use 0-100 estimation the address may not match the exact location, so I use coordinates instead. [although it'll tell you the nearest estimated address! :yikes:

  9. My Garmin Etrex definitely has a boomerang effect. I've walked a hundred a fifty feet by several caches. I guess I walk too fast. It's more noticeable when driving and benchmarking. I can drive .20 past a benchmark before the Etrex catches up with me.

You might want to go into your GPS settings and check to see if your eTrex is in "Battery Save" mode. This mode takes readings much less often than "Normal," lengthing your battery life. It also works fine on the road, or when you know where you're travelling, but I find that I like mine set to normal when trying to zero in on a cache. Just don't set it to "Demo" - I don't think that would help much.

As for caches being 50-60 feet off, I didn't see anyone mention other geocachers. Caches don't always get hidden in the exact same spot, and I've seen some like have migrated several feet (or at least to a place where the hint doesn't make much sense). Granted, 50-60 is a lot, but if you include your normal GPS variance...

    DEMO... java script:emoticon(':)', 'smid_13')

    :)

    that's funny.

As for the bat'save thing... Thanks. I forgot that. I need to go check something then...

This is the first I heard about magellan having a sling shot effect, but I am now glad I've used garmins mostly. I had a Maggy 410 for a while and I am starting to miss the 'averaging' feature on it. I think hiders should always visit the new site a few times and average the coords over those visits. I did and I really think it helped my first hide be more accurate. Maybe to hide, a person should have at least two brands of GPSr to check coords against.

another myth: Muggles are the enemy.

I've gotten several PPL interested in caching while heading for a find. In fact, I was a geomuggle and even had a GPSr for about a year. When I heard I could so something with my technology I was pumped..

  10. Hi all... new to the forum, so I hope this is posted in the appropriate spot.

We love the Signal desktop monthly calendar, but I cannot find the May issue.

    Am I missing something ?

    Thanks

Come on GC.com What are you using my $30/year for? Lets get May going!!! And how about getting future calendars up BEFORE each month begins!

    Thanks.

    Ken.

  11. I would recommend also providing the video in QuickTime format, if not exclusively. Cross-platform compatibility, predictable performance, and a wide variety of compression settings and options stomps wmv in the dirt.

BS - WMV is a better choice. The QT a broken on my PC. WMV is smaller BW and there are players for MAC and Linux on sourceforge.net.

I was going to suggest at least two ways to view.

MAC's main way and Windows'. At least have these two.

QT isn't as cross plaform compatible as ppl with MACs want you to think. :)

Other then that, I think a vidoecache is a great idea. As for the clicking away from GC.com, most webcam caches MUST do this in order to reference the webcam in question.

  12. I suggest you separate the garage sale forum into groups.

    Maybe like this...

    Forsale

    > GPS RELATED

    > Trades

    > Other

Something that helps ppl wade through the posts.

    Also... Idea #2

Original poster can set "SOLD" on posts which either grays them out or removes them.... Who wants to read all about what someone HAD forsale?

  13. It is truly an ugly truck but big folks can fit with no problem. and yes I love it

Sorry did not mean for this to turn into a JoGPS thread

OK - so you bought the rubbermaid truck, and I have only one question...

Do the doors close easily or do you have to "BURP" them first???

    LOL :D

  14. :D

A small note. When placing caches, you can get by with just a basic gps, but for best coordinate accuracy, you should consider using one of the newer GPSr units that has differential capability.

If you DO use a simple GPSr to place the cache, consider asking others to contribute their gps readings while standing over the cache. Then you can average all the readings and update the location on the cache page.

IE: if a simple GPSr is getting 20 ft accuracy and someone comes looking for your cache with their simple GPSr with 20 ft accuracy, they could possibly be 40ft from the cahce and get a dead on reading. so, the more GPSr readings you get, the more accurate if you average all the readings. I did this with my first placement. I visited the location 3 times and took readings every ten minutes for 30 minutes. then each visit was at a different time of day. Then I put all the points in my easy GPS software and used the reading gotten most often as my point. I believe this method helped me be more accurate since I don't have a differentiol GPSr.

  15. There is already a Yahoo group alabamageocachers but I am not dead set on yahoo... I wouldn't mind an all state group but in the past a group of cachers Calling themselves AL geocachers Assoc. have been metting in Huntsville... Clearly, not all AL cachers can afford the time and gas to drive to huntsville and back.

Oak mtn park is a lot better, but still a 2 hour drive for me... That's why I voted for a central AL cache assoc. I would like for the meeting to be within an hour drive, but that would be impossible for everyone since the state is SO TALL... Mobile area would have to drive 3 hours to get to Montgomery, as would ppl in huntsville... That's why there should either be a central assoc, or at least a centralized meeting place. Oak mtn park is arguably within the 'centralized' deffinition and the fact that it's a huge park and there are several caches in the park, makes it a nearly Ideal locale. This could be said for Ft toll ousse also!! cute.gif

I would support a statewide assoc., but again, I really don't want to drive to huntsville for meetings...

Real men don't need to ask for directions. That's why we have GPSRs!

Remember, the glass isn't half empty, or half full, it's too big for the amount of liquid it contains.

  16. I Try to match or better any items I trade. I have only once not done this to my satisfaction. I have found several 'light' caches and I try to add some interesting nicknacks. I only take things I will use or want to collect. The best things are hotwheels and travelbugs!!

I worry about ppl stealing caches and the nicer the cache, the more intrigueing to the would-be thief. So, it probably wouldn't do to make them too nice!

    Cache on dude!

  18. One of the big tricks is getting to the location if you've never been there. I use arial maps and expertGPS to help with road to the locations. GPSS also is helpful. I would not buy a GPS that dosn't map even if I only use it in the woods because you can mark trailheads, bathrooms, the car, a turn... track back using the 'breadcrumbs' feature... OK I change my vote... I wouldn't want a GPS that doesn't have mapping. My GPS is an eMap with external antenna and I hook it to my notebook while driving through the country. It is like having stacks of paper maps that I never have to fold.

NEway... the other issue is wasting my green ink... blue and yellow actually...

  21. I am all for having a set of rules for geocaching. We should be very careful not to destroy or mame the landscape. But I also can see how difficult it would be to mostly hide a cache if you disallow any digging whatsoever. More to the point would be a rule that states... "Only dig where it's allowed or you have permission and doing so won't harm the land in any way." Plus... "never dig in an national park or reserve, and then only hide a cache with permission."

As I see it, there are some places that you just can't hide a cache without some digging. There are other places of course where there are so many natural hiding places that digging would be stupid.

By digging, I mean recessing, I can see NO REASON AT ALL to completely bury a cache.

There is one cache I went to that is in such a totally open and public area that I am shocked that it hasn't been plundered yet. I'm talking about the vererans memorial cache in B'ham AL. Standing where many many ppl probably stand daily, if you look in the right direction, you can't miss the cache. To me, it should be hidden well enough that you have to be practically standing over it to see it.

As a side note. we need to be especially causcious as we move into summer so as not the get bitten or disturb the fauna! Thanks

    Ken
