  1. This happens more often than folks realize. Those thought to be hoarders might just be thieves instead. The "treasure" in this "online treasure hunt"... We saw dozens of promotion Michelin man tire gauge trackables hit an online site. Some unactivated so that's a dose of reality...
  2. Are you a shared account or not? "Technically" not a thing... Your name here sends me to a profile with the same name. We know of hundreds of "family accounts" over the years, and if you're a couple, no big deal. Log 'em. Cache safe. My other 2/3rds travels a lot more than me because of her job. She usually logs them unless it needs to be wordy. - Think she's telling me something? Anyway... I don't cache solo when she's out caching. That's a day for yard work, hiking, or a fly rod. She does have her own account that's for the hundreds of coins that used-to get in the way of each log.
  3. To be fair, we used to have to Drop and Retrieve our trackables each time we wanted to record mileage. It was called "Dipping". We see a few still doing that. It's not incorrect, just more work. "Visit" came along (late '10 IIRC) to make Dipping easier, but never saw the huge groups of people requesting it in the forums... - Now many can hold onto other's property and easily log all trackables in their entire inventory in one shot. Maybe it's just me, but I 'd be happy if the Visit log went bye bye, much less should be doing... True...
  4. I believe a company called stout stuff ships those for Walmart. Size and metal thickness a bit different, so maybe a military "copy" thing. We bought one at a mega once and the seals fell out before we even placed it. - YRMV. and edited to add much of their stuff comes from china. We bought 30 and 50cals by the pallet at military auctions and shared with other cachers to cut cost. Most needed to be painted. You'd probably find real ammo cans if heading to army/navy stores in your area...
  5. When the other 2/3rds was a FTF monster, we'd go to areas we could see were searched thoroughly (brush with no leaves, grass trampled, assorted footprints in all directions...). No DNFs. We chalked it up to arrogance/pride, that some thought it "looked bad" that they couldn't find it. Often those people would leave a NM without a DNF, cluing us in with their, "it must be missing if I can't find it..." thinking. Saturday, I went to a familiar area and DNF both caches there. Stopped for one at an ice cream stand for IGD. What low D/T are good for IMO. Yesterday I went back to CITO the area and found one in a spot not jiving with logs, and only a tether for the other.
  6. Yep, my guess too. Odd that it's become International Geocaching weekend though. Stats...
  7. Maybe it has to do with none of the 600+ hides belong to the account listed? An alternate site may be cross-listing?
  8. I'm fine as it is thanks... Maybe it's just us, but we "CITO" every day we're out in the wild, caching or not. We didn't have a name for it before the hobby... There's nothing stopping anyone from picking up trash while enjoying the outdoors on any given day. It'd be a shame to find out some geocachers only did it for a souvenir...
  9. Still have to mow the grass n stuff (in slo-mo...), so heat isn't much of an issue. The smoke from Canada kept me in the house a while. Our four seasons go from freeze yer can off to hazy, hot n humid, so I guess we acclimate well. Still waiting for that BCG treatment carp after finding yet-another thing wrong after a stent though, so there's good days n bad. I actually looked at my stat page and apparently, I find most caches in August. This year I'll get Int'l Geocaching Day and be happy... I did find a few the end of last month, and finally got to NM a cache that's needed it since 2013.
  10. I was thinking about doing a Vinney & Sue cache with a drone, when my climbing partner did it solo without me (I was sick...). Years ago it woulda been iffy, but drones these days will grab n carry it easily. Thanks for the reminder...
  11. Here you'd have most of that filled the first day on FTFs... Placing a tiny container requires a lot more maintenance, and if you're okay with that, sure.
  12. Yep, the gasket is important. During testing, we found those without a gasket (using the threads alone...) pulled water inside by capillary action. Nice camo.
  13. Luckily our Reviewers take the NM log into consideration... Can't tell you how many times "No more room in log" NMs are posted to find the other side of the RiR note pad was untouched. Our favorites have been "NM, needs a pen"... - Besides finding that at every OM none of the pens/pencils (and sharpeners too) we put in ammo cans were still there from last time, "Cache must have a pen" is not in the guidelines. NM isn't an end all... Reviewers usually give the CO a chance to fix things. Isn't that fair? I'd be happy to see NMs once in a while. A couple weeks ago I placed the second NM on a cache that's only had one since 2013, had issues since it was published, and "found" by 36 other people...
  14. This used to be asked for a lot when phones started to be used more and finally had a decent camera. I can see myself thankful for the kind words on a cache, then a week later ticked off that two spoiler pics were added...
  15. Sounds (to me) to be all about issues with a cacher(s), and not something wrong with the guidelines. Guidelines aren't rules... Before 2017, some people realized that they could do multiple logging on the same cache, and even log their own caches as found. Few did it and now the option no longer works. There's always someone looking to "bilk the system" or stretch the guidelines to the max. Heck, maybe it's even human nature... There's third-party sites dedicated to this hobby's stats. - And now we have the ability to lock most of our profile from view. I understand it's for "internet security"...
  16. We rarely see people log DNF or NM. One recently I'm only the second NM on a cache that's had issues since 2013 (since it was published). Knowing that, we act on logs, rather than wait until it's too late to be repaired and actually needing replacement. Most COs here the same.
  17. I'm not "keen" on the idea... "Just for..." I feel might be an issue. I don't own a dog, but I like dogs and I will be attending... If you center only on owners with trackables on their pet's collars, you might have cut off half the cachers that cache with their pets. We bump into them enough that we started carrying treats in our packs JIC... We've attended events in dog parks. It's important to know which one on the ground is the log.
  18. Congrats on your FTF... Did you know "FTF" can be claimed by anyone finding that cache. Did you take a pic of the log and post it with your online Found It? The other 2/3rds was a FTF monster, yet every once in a while, we'd see "FTF" from another and found later that the person felt they were FTF because they logged online first. "Co" or "group" FTFs and eventually you realize everyone isn't playing the same as you. Probably why FTF isn't on our stats here. No rules, no "credits" given, no prizes won, we finally stopped counting at 350. I like them simply because it's the only time you see a cache as presented by the CO.
  19. Looked and similar to kunarion couldn't find your coin in the cache's inventory. No OM or Write Note, so how did you know it "disappeared" a couple days ago? Thanks. A pain in the can having all those "log every trackable in my inventory" folks in the way. Five pages of visits with only 13 finds... They're all premium members, so maybe it'll dawn on one that they need to Grab It from you. Good luck...
  20. If you notified the CO and wrote about it in your Found It log (you did...), as yours was the only NM, why would you come to that conclusion? You say even in your log that you got all info from the CO... Too late now, but I think maybe since I talked to the CO directly, as colleda said, if it really bugged me I'd put it on Watch JIC.
  21. Maybe it's not possible (or intentionally tricky to accomplish...) because of our actions logs? I'd assume it was disabled, and wouldn't bother to look why...
  22. I feel it depends on whether you want to remain a basic member first... Old school I guess...I feel a GPSr that does one thing well might be just a bit better than a phone that has numerous functions within. To be fair, along with a 60csx, the other 2/3rds used a Blackberry and Trimble Outdoors to cache in 2005... As for "accuracy", a modern phone isn't much different than a GPSr. It's battery, fragilely, and water resistance I feel sets the two apart. I can load batteries in my long-discontinued GPSr forever. Even with a powerbank, a phone's just not the same. Maybe it's just me, but a grand for a phone means it stays in a pocket or case (I like Nutshell's cases...). Like your "old" GPSr, up NE of you you'd need to load caches offline. Not sure that's possible with app as a basic member. As a basic member using the website, you can access all caches, all D/T, but Premium Member Only (I don't feel no PMO is a big loss). With the phone app alone and a basic member, you're restricted to Traditionals and Events and those traditionals are set at 2 D/T tops.
  23. We can't delete messages through the message system. It doesn't matter if it's on the website or phone. If deleting is important, their is usually a link on that person's profile page for email...
  24. We often see tracking codes in photos on Trackable Owners own trackable page. That 'oops...' means many "Discovers"... Sometimes a cacher will post it in their gallery without ever placing it in the trackable's page. That code's now online... I've found hundreds of trackable codes online, and usually leave a Discover log, telling that TO where I saw it (it's on them to fix it...). Many times, my Discover is deleted and I'm fine with that. Embarrassed I guess and want to blame someone for their mistake. And some create number generators, that goes through thousands of code variations before they get a hit. I feel that's a weird waste of time. Curious... what happened to TB 12? It's in an "unknown" location, but not a single log. Thanks.
