  1. Couldn't have flipped the Trackable's code around before the pic? We had a few Trackables go missing within a week after placing it in a cache, so thought we'd try another area, and mailed a promotion Trackable to a Cacher in Australia for International Friendship Day (who wasn't in the promotion even though the company [IIRC] was from there) to see if it'd last longer. It was Dropped in a cache in September '22, lasted twenty days in Australia, and Retrieved by a German cacher who took it to Germany with them. "Visited" a few times by others, and now supposedly sitting in the same cache since January '23... So, location doesn't matter. It's all luck of the draw. Maybe being "stuck in your region for roughly a year" wasn't such a bad thing...
  2. Yep, no point. When we used to take new folks out, most used their real names until they decided to join. Some joined months later. All remembered to mention they were with us, so finding us in the log would solve any issue (if they even looked). I sign the first open space I see. It may not be in with recent finds, but the date right next to the sig should suffice. I do that after getting NM from people who didn't have the common sense to realize there's two sides to every piece of paper...
  3. Please explain further. Wording isn't clear... Thanks. Is this a group find, or is someone writing in names of people not there? Are you physically watching who's signing your cache? You have a large number of finds; you never went with a group? The first months we started, we went with a "group" of cachers on a multiple cache series. One person signed for everyone in the group (they signed it as a "team name").
  4. Did you consider asking the CO for a hint? One restriction under the terms of Use says, 2.4.15 Publish on our websites or anywhere else, solutions, hints, spoilers, or any hidden coordinates for any geocache or Adventure without consent from the owner.
  5. IIRC, one of the few things you can't change on a cache is it's type...
  6. Agree with others, hole on each end not good for keeping water out. Nice n secure for decent sized outdoor lighting cords though. Looked online and they don't seem to have a hinge, but simply bending plastic open/closed. Doesn't appear to be the same plastic as a lock n lock, so it'd probably be broken in no time...
  7. We did one that said maybe it's a good idea to bring a hammer.
  8. Here and your profile show PM, so it must have been that "takes a while to settle in" thing...
  9. Trails like this are often a cooperation with many jurisdictions, with tribal, federal, state, county, city and even park entities that own and maintain sections. Agree with WRASTRO, looks like PTC is your best bet. If they're the ones who aren't responding, your area's Reviewer may be able to offer helpful info on permissions (who owns where).
  10. The only "tree fishing" cache I've done included an actual fishing reel. I'm dyslexic, so seems I'm not seeing the same as others... This "small" magnet must be heavy enough to swing up into a tree, right? Is it heavy enough to hit a kid in the face if they missed? Many we know throw heavy shot bags regularly (to attach rope), and we've seen how uncoordinated friends who don't are. We have a small, rounded lead fishing bank weight for throwing light mason line to do the same, and found most prefer the leather bag than maybe getting hit by that thumbnail-size piece of metal when they (almost always...) miss. I like the retracting part, cool idea! But I see most bringing a pole and taping your magnet to the end once word's out...
  11. We put events we're not sure about on our watch list, but like GeoElmo6000, if we might go we say we might attend. Head count helps the EO... The watch list helps us know if friends I'm holding onto something for is going, how many kids so we can pass out toys to keep 'em busy, and even tells us if someone we bumped heads with recently is gonna be there, and whether the other 2/3rds is ready for that yet.
  12. Similar to a few I guess... I've passed on many "smileys" for assorted reasons (none having to do with access...). It's up to you as long as your name's in the log... When I could climb (still outta commission), don't need, but could use a spotter, cameraman, and maybe even a go-fer. A team. - All participated in some way and claim the "smiley". I'd bring it down or drop it to them, so they decide whether they sign the log... I'm dyslexic, and sometimes have issues with math n such. - A disabled friend would solve the puzzle cache, get as close to GZ as he could, and I'd access it for him. A team. With so many "creative" with caches and Trackable codes, it's refreshing that someone feels guilty enough to post it in the forums. You were a team, log it if you'd like. Or not...
  13. "Unclimbable" location for me is apparently a bit different than you... If you can see it, it's a D1 or 1.5 22-23 feet is kinda low-end for a rope cache, but I'd rate it a T5, as "specialized equipment" would be used (or someone lugging a ladder). One of our few remaining hides is a huge camo rural mailbox 30' up, positioned from a branch, and it's D1.5 and T5.
  14. No. That doesn't make sense. I'd guess since it was "camo" you lugged it in yourself... It had to be perfect for "something", but what are the odds someone other than a cacher would check there for cool rocks? I used an ALICE pack frame to lug a huge, flat rock I took from our neighbor's quarry, and spray painted it flat black for a cache once. Everyone thought I was BSing them, but a cacher went with me to reclaim it when we archived the cache. - They never spotted the huge flat black rock in a boundary stone wall in state game lands...
  15. I understood what you were saying. However, I'm dyslexic as heck, and that might have helped.
  16. Nope. Trackables aren't swag. You Retrieve it and Drop it off elsewhere, or simply Discover it to show the Owner it's still in play, and where. - Some have more complex "goals"... The rare time we see a CO make mention of exchanging Trackables not his (I guess for appearance of being busy...), I grab whatever's in there. Pretty-much all you need to know about Trackables.
  17. If it's really in your collection, now you can (if you'd like...) bring it/them with you at events, or on the trail, to be Discovered by others. Usually a collection is a lot of trackables, mostly for show, like someone who collects stamps or coins. This is where people who like to push buttons mess up. Marking it "collectible" alone allows another to take your trackable and put it in their collection. Legal hoarding. My activated trackables not in collection (and in inventory) are all marked Not Collectible...
  18. Agree with Mineral2, your "accuracy" is probably good enough. "Accuracy" hasn't really improved that much, friends with brand spankin' new top o' the line are equal to mine from 2005... We put the gizmos away when we're around 30 feet or so, the search (and maybe a hint) will be better than doing the bee dance all day.
  19. I usually have a single walking stick. It's good to get the webs n leaves away too. But I worry more of things with bigger fangs ...
  20. I'd add make sure they're slower than you also, for checking in possible bear dens too...
  21. Geocaching has been a free hobby since well-before you started. Did you actually pay for premium membership before, for only four caches found over the years? I wouldn't have... You accessed two caches with higher terrain, so you obviously knew how to get around the site at the time if you remained basic. It's at 2T for basic members (if using the app) now... You were in early enough that I'd assume you used a GPSr to get started... Well, going on the website you still can, and it's still free. I don't use most of the services for premium members, still loading caches manually to a long-discontinued GPSr. You could too. I maintain that PM now to help pay for allowing basic members to continue playing for free...
  22. Is this similar to some "exchange" caches often seen in all nations, where some simply log each other's new cache for the country? IIRC, a few of them were being looked at too...
  23. Pretty-much the only time a friend asks me to tag along is when she's in uncomfortable locations or terrain, or I bring my pack frame with me. Any other time I'm taken too long, "picking up stuff...". She marks locations of new caches and keeps old, archived caches in her GPSr. - Any time she's in the area, she'll call the CO of those archived caches to see if they want them ... and me. She's created entire series with ammo cans that way. Ammo cans left in the woods...
  24. Surprised to receive the "survey" on this since I didn't participate. Or maybe that's why...
