Now, instead of lab rats they have meth-maggots and crank-weasels! Cool, they eat less than the rats.

Can you tell I'm anti-drug? One "person" a few doors down from me, who I wouldn't know at all if she didn't have a son the same approx. age as mine, is obviously a methamphetamine user. The son would come over to play, and all of a sudden three or four cars would show up in her driveway. Then our phone would ring... "Can you make sure (son's name) doesn't come home before he calls here first?" Now, why can't the kid come home whenever he wants? What is she worried he'll catch her doing? When (son's name) wanted to go home, I'd have him call and sure enough, all of the cars would leave!

They were just evicted, though I don't know what for. The kid came over to play "for the last time". She had the nerve to say, "Can I drop (son's name) off here next time I'm in town?" Uh, yeah sure... just as long as you don't mind my calling CPS! Maggot... I feel sorry for the poor kid.

  2. ...arguement, IMHO.

I understand if they show up on one's radar when checking for new caches in one's area. The super-simple ones I agree are pretty bad. What is worse is: have you noticed how many folks who place/generate locationless caches also log them as finds for themselves? That is even more ridiculous... place a cache so you can log it. Or folks who log more than one time for that same cache ("...oh, and look, we found ANOTHER mural!"). Other than the mural cache, I find it amusing that even on these simpler caches, many people still can't read the rules or follow instructions.

There are many redeeming qualities for the better locationless caches, though (IMHO).

Some are for historical areas/markers that would be impossible to place any kind of cache, except maybe a virtual, and most of those you can look up on the internet to get the answers for and post it as a find. Those are still great places to get others to go. I have always found it interesting to learn that folks that have lived in an area for all or most of their lives know very little about that area's history. No, Geocaching isn't History 101, but part of GCing is bringing folks to places they wouldn't normally go - so these apply.

Another thing I like about loctionless caches is that I can learn more about the areas in which other geocachers live and THEIR history by reading the logs. I love reading the site logs, this is no different. I especially enjoy looking at the pictures. It is like virtual traveling for me. You might find that weak, and I suppose it makes me a voyeur... so be it.

And finally, while looking over the locationless caches, I discovered quite a few interesting points about my own area that I didn't know... like that a little town such as where I live has TWO SuperFund clean-up sites! Yikes! One very close to my home. The real estate agent never told me about THAT!

Again it should be said, if you don't like them, don't do them. Don't be a Nazi and say that they don't meet YOUR criteria for a GC and so they don't belong. Those who complain habitually don't lend any credence to their perspective. I hate it when people drive through my beautiful area and stop for lunch and during that time flood the local list with drive-up, drive-off virtuals that take little or no ability or imagination other than to plug in coordinates.

If you get rid of locationless, ditch virtuals and I don't think that, with the NFS and State and National Parks in prime caching areas, that that will happen anytime soon.

All caches have some validity. If they get too lame, that decision needs to be made in the approval stage.

On our very first cache outing we grabbed a TB. Getting the TB was one of my main objectives in picking that cache. We had checked out the website for days before actually "heading out", and I took it upon myself to learn about TB's and the proper way to handle them. Our very first cache placement was designed completely around that travel bug and was, in fact, named for him. Now, I just wish he'd move. I just wish someone would visit that cache! It isn't all that remote compared to some others in the area.

But it doesn't matter. The TB isn't even in it. It has been sitting in someone's house since November ( icon_mad.gif ). He's not my TB, but I'd sure like to see him move, or the person who has him to put him out somewhere even if it isn't the place he'd originally planned on taking him, just so he could meet his agenda.

IMHO, people shouldn't keep a TB longer than 2 weeks. We took some up to the Contact Cache, so they moved far when we moved them.

I also found a traveler in a cache (Agent Scully) and took her to the Contact Cache (seemed right up her alley!), but when I attempted to email the owner as requested in her FBI Report Book the email has come back as non-deliverable. The last person to have her had the same problem. I have no idea where Scully is, how to keep track of her or who her original owner was. Sad.

I'm happy to see the idea for a laminated card attached to the bug with the tag. Seems like it would inspire more activity.

Yep, one of them is a new action figure designed for the new movie (we went to see it today, but the theater was full! So, we took the boys to see Ice Age... what a funny movie!), one that has this spinning trash-can prop with it. Should I send the prop, too?

The other two are Witchblade action figures to commemorate the new season of Witchblade the series on TBS coming in June: A Kenneth Iron Gold Neogenesis and a Scarlet Medieval Witchblade (both sculpted by Clayton Moore).

I haven't completely worked out their goals, yet. I thought of sending Spiderman to New York City, to Ground Zero, but isn't everybody doing that? NYC is where the movie and comics took place.

Witchblade takes place in New York, too, but Sara Pezzini gets around a bit more. Any suggestions will be thrown into the mix and considered for the final release...

    Thanks!

Well, the the books registered at BookCrossing.com are in essence just like travel bugs. You register the books you have/have read and want to "release", you write the pertinent information like the registration number and your info inside the book's cover. When you release it, you post on the bookcrossing.com site the place and date it was "released to the wild". Then people (even non-geocachers) can search for released books they are interested in. Once they are found, the finder goes to the bookcrossing.com website, logs the find and from then on can log "notes", like what they thought of it after reading it and if and when they release it. You and anyone else who chooses to can check on the status and read the exploits of the book.

Very similar to a TB, but with a bit more adventure and no photos that I can see.

So, in essence, I've released 12 book travel bugs!

As for stealing... it isn't really my idea, I don't think. I got the idea from a THIS THREAD that Jeremy started. I thought of doing the books-only cache just seconds before reading tmac's post. So feel free to do one. Like I said, I'd like to see these all over the country/world!

I will be watching this cache carefully too, because my kids now want to do a bookcrossing.com Kids Only cache! It is harder to find real little kids paperback books though.

  9. I did a search, and didn't find this topic before... maybe I worded it incorrectly, but here goes:

I am almost ready to place Red's Ultimate Comics Cache, something I've been planning and gathering items for for months.

I have nearly twenty comic books and three collectible comic book action figures that I'd like to turn into travel bugs (the AC's not the comics). I have the figures, I have the tags...

1.) should I take the action figures out of their boxes? They aren't very expensive ($5 each), but I can't imagine a travel bug left in it's original box (especially since the box is kinda large). I suppose once it is open, it isn't a collectible anymore, though.

2.) is it unusual to put three bugs in one new cache? I'm considering making this an MOC, even if only for six weeks, just to insure that people take it seriously, since it is a very themed cache (comic stuff to trade only). I think that if it is an MOC that the TB's might have a better chance of reaching their goals.

I would appreciate opinions, soon. I'm ready activate the bugs and place the cache!

  10. I wish I had known that this had been reduced in price. With two adults and two kids under 10 there was no way we could do it at the higher price, so I stopped watching the page.

Now I wish I hadn't. *sniff* Well, hopefully this one is so bang-up cool that there will be a second annual! We'll be at that one, fer sure!

Here is one such, if I understand this correctly.

I have looked at the Letterboxing website before and dismissed it months ago because there weren't any in my area (the closest is almost 300 miles south of me). Now that I look closer, most of them would rate a 5 for terrain on GC.com. Out of twenty that I looked at in So. Cal. area where I grew up, the majority required the use of helicopter or boat to gain access to, or they are so far out in the middle of nowhere that the owners suggest spending an "Idyllic Weekend" while hunting for it! Now that is dedication to a hobby!

On the otherhand, almost all of them were considered "orphans" and the original placer asks that others care for and maintain the cache as they can't be back for "years". Not very responsible. 90% of the ones I've read about were also located within a State or National Park or NFS land. Ahem...

I hope that Letterboxers aren't giving Geocachers a black eye with their disregard for protocols.

Then why, though I have been diligently practicing all of the above - newest version of IE, update my Norton AV once per week, it is always on and ZoneAlarm keeps things from coming in or going out when I am not online and have the system locked - am I getting emails "returned" to me by a mailer daemon with my email address as the original sender? Now, Norton reads my emails before I do, and when my emails are d/loading it tells me that something infected is attempting to cross the threshold and would I like to quarentine, repair or delete it. I always click on delete, and yet I have been getting 15 to 20 returns or forwarded attempts per day! ARGH!

I've run Norton Virus Scan, with the patch to specifically check for all versions of Klez and it tells me I'm clean... and has been since this started. Is Norton missing something, or am I?

Steak and I started caching in Oct. of last year and we currently have in excess of 60 finds - not great but not bad. We are obviously some of those who dive in with both hands and feet and come out dancing.

I write an infrequent column for the local paper here and I wrote an article on Geocaching that was published in Nov. '01. The local Wal-Mart claims that they have sold quite a large number of GPS units since, and the person buying commented that they were going to try Geocaching. But the number of "local" visitors to caches here don't bear that out. We get a high volume of tourist traffic when the weather is good, and that brings more GCers into the area, but doesn't say much for the locals.

The funny thing to me is that I think some of the newbies, most of whom are people between the ages of 18 and 30 whom we've encouraged to start, got scared away. I won't say why in this forum... I know what will happen if I do, but scared and harangued away from a great hobby they were. Not by us, trust me. It isn't the lack of caches here, we have a good number for an area of this population density.

Maybe it is just me and all of my friends and aquaintences are flakes... sheesh.

At this point, wild elephants couldn't drag our family away from this sport!

  17. Well, it has been in the planning stages for over a month and it has finally been released. I believe that this is the first fully-BookCrossing dedicated Geocache.

It hasn't been approved yet, but here's the URL.

To say that it is a themed cache is putting it mildly...

I hope it gets a good/great response. It is in a wonderful and easily accessible area, so it should get a lot of traffic.

(*fingers crossed, chanting "I hope, I hope..."*)

I'd like to know what you all think? I'd love to see these all over the world, how about it?

My months-in-the-works Comics Cache will be set out on Sunday... I can hardly wait!

In one of the other threads I noticed that someone mentioned they had placed a cache only to find out that someone else had placed one very close to theirs, with a similar name, but listed it on Bux|ey's instead of Geocaching.com. They then moved and renamed their cache... if I remember correctly (the cache was called "Whistle Punk"?).

    My questions are these:

1.) How often do any of you check Bux!ey's or Nav|cache before placing a new cache?

2.) Do you ever post your caches to more than one or all three sites (or more)?

I have seen group get-togethers listed on the others that are also listed here, but didn't do a cache-by-cache check.

I think it is an appropriate way to celebrate, right?
