  3. We put our first cache camera in a cache that we have discovered is pretty popular this summer and will have to go out and replace the camera soon, if the logs are any indication. I'm really looking forward to seeing the photos, putting faces with names and posting the results on our GeoGadgets website (which is YES, down right now due to server difficulties). When we find them we always take a photo of ourselves or just our boys and we think they are pretty spiffy! Especially when we visit out of town caches like the ones we trekked to in Portland! ---------- Lori aka: RedwoodRed KF6VFI "I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations." 5. quote:Originally posted by White Rabbit:Man, that sounds a lot like me. I have no clue (and don't want to) how much money I've shelled out on eBay recently. Picking up Simpson's Interactive action figures and hard to find vinyl records....yep, vinyl. I can't believe how much some of those old albums go for. In any case, eBay is a great place to find many things and sometimes you actually get lucky and bid on something that slips by everyone else (King Crimson 2 LP lot - In the Court of the Crimson King/In the Wake of Posiedon====$4.00 for BOTH in perfect condition!!! Sweet deal!!) Man! I forgot that I have a butt-load of two huge crates of vinyl in my garage from the late 50's, 60's and '70's... I'll have to see what kinds of stuff is saleable. Should I give you first shot, there RK? Right now I'm concerned with parting company with a few Star Wars, Witchblade and Warcraft III action figures. Oh, and a crisp new MERP game in the box from 1984... maybe even 1k of Magic the Gathering cards. Somebody give me a hell yeah! Lori aka: RedwoodRed
  6. I just got an email to my geocaching e-address from some 'person' trying to get me to join their noble 'cause'. It was a very long letter, with instructions on how to find the information required to join their 'cause'. They would not give precise directions, so as to avoid too much negative email responses! How one finds their website is: in the email is a list of words. One goes to a search engine (I used Google) and types in two of the words in any random order, noting the top so-many search hits. They state that there are seven true combinations of words. I found their site within 10 attempts (hey, I'm a geocacher! I can't turn down a puzzle!) and it spews the same rhetoric that the email did so I know I've hit pay dirt. I'm disturbed, 1) because this was sent to an email address I use solely for Geocaching, 2) the person who sent it might be a fellow geocacher, and God help me, I don't want to meet this person while hunting a cache! Has anyone else received something similar with the title in the subject column of "Fakes"? Just curious... RedwoodRed
  7. ... Less Filing! I never know which one I should go with. Of course, I've always had a hard time not eating all of the green M&M's in the bag first, even if it is a one pounder! Go figure... I would really like to know what you hard-core Northern Oregonian cachers think of our unimaginative caches down here. Sorry I haven't posted lately. I have been waylaid by the attraction of eBay. 10. quote:Originally posted by Ramness570:Anything is better than naming your cache "Geocache" Oh yeah, and I've seen a few of those. The cache description almost always says: "Couldn't think of a name, so I will change it when I think of one..." and it never happens.
  11. If you think, even for now, that you're in it for the "goodies", look for caches that specify what items you might have to choose from. Even if it has been awhile since the placer hid it, the items will tend to remain consistant, though they also have a tendancy to degrade, though that is a separate topic and has been discussed to death. Don't be discouraged by your first find. Hopefully it won't be your last. I'm sure that there are other cache placers in your area. Try some of their 'treasures'. One of our caches consists entirely of paperback books, but you will be well aware of that if you come hunting for it. I have another container sitting next to my front door filled with new bagged-and-boarded comic books and action figures from comic books. Now, you wouldn't be disappointed to find that, would you? Just to point out that there are diverse contents. Don't give up! ---------- Lori aka: RedwoodRed KF6VFI "I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations." 12. Well, one of our more recent ones is called "Where's Waldo?" and though that isn't a very original name, the cache is hidden in what is now the historic and nearly forgotten town of Waldo, Oregon. The former inhabitants literally wiped Waldo off of the maps by tearing the town down. Another is "Open Wide, Jedediah!" because it is hidden near the 'mouth' of the Jedediah Smith River in Northern California. Or, "High on Low Divide" for a cache placed at the very highest point along Low Divide Road. My favorite name (of the caches placed so far by us) is "Gone Bughouse", for a Travel Bug named, of course, Bughouse and we were trying to send him along his way. We even placed items in the cache to make him feel at home while he was there... isn't that cute... I love the naming part, and I think one of my favorite cache names is "Raiders of the Lost Cache", probably because of all of the work that went into making it like the movie from which the name was derived. One of the locals here and I have a contest of sorts to see who comes up with the wittiest cache names...
  13. I was perusing the new local caches and almost sprayed coffee all over my monitor when I came across the name of THIS CACHE! I love thinking up amusing and interesting names for our caches... it is half of the fun. Yes, I can be accused of lack of imagination on some of our placements, too, but the majority have humorous or thought-invoking names. Sometimes the name comes before the cache or even where to place it for me. I currently have about five cache names and we are putting together caches to immortalize them with. How much importance do you place on the name of your cache? What is the most amusing cache name you have ever seen/found/hidden? Will you hunt a cache with a funny/interesting name just because of said name? Curiousity compels me... ---------- Lori aka: RedwoodRed KF6VFI "I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations." 14. get mad, Choberiba. I too believe that caches can be closer together than a mile, half-mile, third of a mile... I enjoy hunting them all. It isn't like I'm going to boycott somebody's cache because they placed it too close to mine or didn't visit my caches while they were in the area. A tourist, which we get tons of around here this time of year, is excused from hitting one or two caches in the area, maybe finding a nice place to hide one or two and moving on in their travels. HOWEVER, I do maintain that those who live within 100 miles of this area should look into adjacent caches BEFORE placing new ones. The folks in question were obviously familiar with the area in which they wanted to place this cache to some degree. Maybe they are of the variety that would rather hide than find and that is okay, too. But these folks never visited any of the other caches between their zip code and mine. Not one. One of these groups of cache-dumpers/placers was obviously staying at a local hostel while traveling and probably placed caches all along their route at other hostels, etc. And the issue of too many caches and not enough space to hide new ones doesn't apply here. Six months ago there weren't enough caches to get excited about. Though that has changed, the majority of the acreage in this area is wilderness, series of trails, National Park and BLM land with plenty of places to hide caches. If they had worked on it a bit, they had eighty-plus miles of roadway and access to the lands adjacent to those in which to hide caches away from any others. I guess it is just me. Our caches tend to get good reviews and they are in interesting places with interesting history and I love to share that. I just wish more folks would plan on coming out here to hunt them! After all, that is the coolest reason for placing caches: sharing one's love for an area and it's history. I guess I've prattled long enough... back to my new obcession... eBay Action Figures! 16. It could be phase of the moon... Maybe the planets aren't aligned right... It could be too hot... It could be too windy (here)... It could be lack of interest (NAW!)... Too much work... Too little time... Too much reading and responding to forum threads... Yep, that's the ticket!

  18. Just for the record, I would like to point out that the website Doombot uses as a reference is not an official documenting (sp?) website, but instead a promotional tool and without any documentation to prove its claim to largest, and is thereby unreliable. I do agree that the bickering should have taken place in private email and you probably shouldn't even have brought it up here as that just instigates more animosity. It is a game/sport. The owner of the cache has made his/her/their decision. I think the point has been made. Move on.
  19. I would like to point out that one of the caches I have mentioned we visited and it was very well hidden, BUT it was placed very close to private property where there is a shooting range and in our log I mentioned that, so I hope other folks who plan to visit that cache will take note, especially in regard to parking and where to start their search. The second mentioned cache we haven't gone in search of yet, so I cannot comment on its placement or condition. I was so agitated when I saw where it was placed that I waited two days before I even wrote my initial post on this thread, no less going hunting for it. We may go hunting for it today (last day of school - whoopie...) and it is Steak's day off, but I'll leave it up to him as I'm supposed to be putting my nose to the grindstone... I will offer to maintain them - I WON'T request that they be removed as I DO encourage cache placement and will do nothing like that to discourage a new cacher, unless they set a cache within yards or less of mine without acknowledging that cache. I will also point out that before I began this thread I emailed the placer and asked why they visited the area long enough to place a cache but not long enough to visit the other two caches within walking distance. I have received no response, so far.

  21. What a cool idea! If I get it, can I clean out my wallet, sock drawer and pockets and fill it with lint? Oh, you just want calling cards? 22. I live in the most beautiful place in the whole world! That said, many tourists and travelers pass through this area, either to visit here or on their way elsewhere. In the past month we have had two groups of people come to this area and place caches in close proximaty to one of our caches. One of the caches is practically across the street from ours and the latest one is within a half-mile, along the same trail. The closeness doesn't really bother me, but what does upset me is that neither of these groups bothered to LOOK for our cache! It is almost as though they are/were unaware of its existance. Maybe it is just me, but when I find out that cachers come to this area to cache-hunt and they walk or drive right past one of my caches, I get frustrated. Maybe it is just the long winter of near cache-inactivity on the part of anyone around here but us that makes me curious. A small point of bother: these folks couldn't have done any research at all into the area in which they were placing the cache. They just slapped it there and left town. "Well, I happen to be here, so I'll just leave this box of trinkets!" Who will maintain them? One of the groups lives in Illinois (I'm in No. Cal.) and the others live at least 100 miles from where they placed the cache. Do any of you get upset when you know that cachers have been in the area and didn't hit some of your caches that you know were right along their way? ---------- Lori aka: RedwoodRed KF6VFI "I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations." 24. Good Topic! To the tyro: No, it isn't a fashion show, no one ever said it was and next time you feel tempted to make a snide, sexist comment, use your REAL nick! In General: I too did some research into boots before buying some. I have had excellent luck with New Balance for casual shoes so I checked out their website and the Denham boots that they make. I like NB's because they make them in wide sizes and I have wide feet. I purchased (online) a pair of New Balance MO851's. They are waterproof (very important to me) and they have an excellent mid-foot support. They are extremely lightweight even though the lugs are deep and agressive. They are a mid-ankle boot and I appreciate the ankle support. I have had them since the beginning of March and I now enjoy Geocaching even more. It is amazing the difference a good pair of shoes/boots can make. ---------- Lori aka: RedwoodRed KF6VFI "I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations."
