  1. I hosted an event last year on TN Valley Authority property (TVA) and had requested a representative from their agency to attend. The cachers and the agent had some great interaction with each side coming to understand the other's side even more. I've even taken him out to visit some of the various caches in the area he patrols so he will know the specifics on the caches. I feel it should be top priority to educate the police of our game. I've had run ins with the authorities as low as Barney Fife and as high as the Secret Service while caching. I try to keep the brochure from Geo-U on me to help explain what I'm doing as well as a business card which lists the yahoo group I started for my area for further investigation if they wish. But in this day and time, I can totally understand the police reaction to an ammo box. I've found few ammo boxes that had the original markings altered and them designated as a "game piece."
  2. Congrats!!! I enjoy travelling to various areas and attend events. Maybe our paths may cross sometime. Until then......keep on cach'n!!!!
  3. Ttam42 and my logs on this cache justifies sticking to the trail. It was quite an adventure we had. Stick to the trails unless you're a SHORT distance from ground zero.
  4. I've spent 2 days devoted to a new multi that had me going thru a cemetary gathering numbers from headstones and statues, only to find the hiders computations were off. So I was a FTF their math was off and finally got the FTF on it. There's one in a near by town that is supposedly a Mr Magneto painted the same color as the gravel in a flower bed. There's been various cachers employ different methods of locating it. There's been large magnets run over the area and even one cacher who brought a metal detector for the search. Their search has come up empty. With a nice FTF prize, I'd make them earn it unless there's something off on your computations.
  5. Great job in educating those in your area. I hope it turns out well.
  6. Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately I saw it a little too late. I just started a tb to track the miles I travelled caching and upon seeing 0 miles on it, I thought something was wrong and I deleted all the logs. I'll keep an eye out for it to be working.
  7. We found one over the weekend that was logged prior to the reviewer publishing it? The cache was found and published on the very same day. I didn't realize posting a find prior to publishing was possible. But it was shown like that on my pq as well as 3 other's pq. Upon returning home, it had changed to a find following posting with the same date. The log didn't indicate an edite log.
  8. I never realized there was voting going on or nominations for the matter. I don't feel worthy of what should be a highly regarded award. I have strong feelings one of our local cachers is worthy of it. When I travel to various states, it's usually said "you are from where ___ lives." But in a state the size and shape of VA, it's difficult for word to get out and cachers to know one another. I'm in an area where it's easier to travel to 2 other states than travel to the closest group in our own state. I appreciate the thought of the vote for carrying the cooler and mingling with the crowd. But I would rather have a vote based on number of hides, recruiting new cachers, talking to groups about caching, and taking less fortunate cachers out on my $2+ / gallon to enjoy a hobby / obsession that I have. That is giving back to geocaching, in my book. After going out sick in the nasty weather over the weekend, I ended up feeling worse as the weekend went on. I'd sleep a few hours and then have to get out of bed and found a couple of "can you believe this" e-mails. I shouldn't have been as sarcastic with my post to your group and I apologize for that. But what merits should a person have, how should the selection(s) be made, and how should nominations be solicited? My opinion of the matter is that it's nothing more than a joke. Maybe the next years "award" will be handled in a different manner.
  9. I'm a member of various groups. (No longer the Roanoke, VA group as my own decision.) I recall the MD geocaching group accepts nominations on various categories. It is much easier because it is on a state site and not a regional site. MD is also much smaller than VA and from what I've seen in the many posts there, many of them seem to know one another as well as the caches in the state. I loved the TB idea where it travels with the recipient from cache to cache on their travels. It's a great idea that I'd like to use for an upcoming milestone event for some local cachers.
  10. Hides are measurable. (Other numbers are indicative of nothing but the fun we have and the miles on our vehicles.) Travelling to events to meet fellow cachers in other areas, since it is a state award. Willingness to help others in the caching community. Organizing events for cachers to get acquainted with one another. A fair pool of candidates (not just 2) to select from / as cachers of the year. Unbiased "judge(s)" to select the "winner" based on their merits. Yes, I was the person that called out what I saw as a shoe in win in your local group and the war of e-mails has started because of my comments. But with only 2 candidates being nominated in the entire state, I feel something was obviously wrong. I will be the first to say I'm not worthy or expect any type of award in the state or any level. I'm involved in caching for the interesting sights and people that I encounter. I've made some very dear friends I'd never had if not for caching. Just as I've met some others that help me understand why abortion is legal. There were some very worthy people who didn't get their name in the hat for consideration. Part of the error was mine as I was a member of the group the announcement was made on 1/1 for nominations. Whether I checked the mail after too much festivity or simply overlooked it is beyond me. It's not just numbers...it is much more as you state. With the regional divisions of the hobby, is it possible to know of one's merits in another area? I don't feel it is. There could be many worthy of the award and only 2 were nominated by their peers?
  11. I recentely attended a 5K party where a platinum ammo box was awarded. I'm not sure what a 2K would call for though. Something that might be considered is the milestone coins that can be engraved with the date, waypoint, and cachers name for various miilestones. It would surely be appreciated by the recipient. Of course a new car would be nice too or even a 6 pk of Guinness.
  12. Although I live in VA, I attended an event at Pipestem park last year with a great group of cachers from your state. Maybe get in touch with some of the cachers that attended event waypoint GCNN9V Those in attendance were a real pleasure to meet.
  13. I get to learn the locations light poles and phone booths in various area. I have recently been enjoying the social aspects of events.
  14. Here's a link to TN Rest Area caches. I hope this helps for at least one state.
  15. We had a hiking club at the small college I went to and some of them already had a gpsr. Maybe you would consider joining that group and spreading the word among them? They already enjoy getting out in the wilderness and scoring a find while taking a break on a trail would just be a bonus.
  16. An "expert opinion" from someone with 10 finds but 10,000 forum posts.
  17. My Subaru Legacy Sedan has been a great cache-mobile. Although I'm looking at adding a 06 Pontiac GTO. Maybe those 400 horses under the hood will get me a couple of FTF?
  18. I had one of my caches that moved all over the howitzer (sp?) gun it was attached to. Each time I visited it, it was in a different location. Cachers would call me because the hint could even lead Helen Keller to it, but it never seemed it was replaced in the same place twice. After an hour and half hunt for it one day, I finally archived it. It's was the case of the mysterious moving micro coming to an end.
  19. Unless I can see the hours posted at a park when it's dark, I avoid them. I do the same with cemetaries. You first said there's a sign clearly saying sunrise to sunset and then you said you assume. You know what they say when you assume?
  20. I can recall at least 4 caches where they even took something and left something. The first they were hunters who ran across the ammo box and they left a nice log entry as well as feathers from "the kill." The second was at an overlook and logged by a young couple that left their college id's in exchange for swag. The third logged they thought it was a bomb. (But for some stupid reason they opened the ammo box that was way out in the woods.) They were kind enough to leave a beer for the next finder. The fourth ammo box was logged "If you're reading this I p*ssed in this box." It must have happened well in the past because it was dry and had no odor.
  21. EXACTLY Lone Duck. We have a cacher who is an avid hiker that has a history of flaming in the logs of micros. I started putting in my cach descriptions that it is a lame urban micro, if you don't like them..don't hunt them. He would still go off in the logs. After a few (ok, many) choice words in an e-mail to them and deleting their log, it seems to have helped. Caching is supposed to be fun and some people's bitterness in life can spoil it for everyone.
  22. I always welcome the opportunity to meet other cachers and a cache near their home is a great way to do it. I am more comfortable when they reference that it's at their home so I know I don't have the wrong coords in the gps. You may want to also indicate a time frame to search or times when not to search for the cache.
