  1. Just wondering really, after going to a good dozen caches that are meant to contain Tb's/geocoins etc and find they are not there. Is this down to the site owner to ensure this information is correct or not?
  2. being new i missed out on this, but hopefully will be able to attend the next one and meet many of you as well as (hopefully) gain some good tips
  3. Being a newbie this is what i thought it was about, but some caches ive seen have one item to trade within while another had a royal mail keyring and a broken toy... However the best cache i found had loads of kids stuff and certainly lived up to the youtube video on this site of what a cache should look like. Just hope my first cache doesnt get abused considering the money i spent on it.
  4. My first cache got approved last night. As some of you know im new here and after a few emails with the reviewer and trying to understand what waypoints are and how to enter them i eventually managed to get it right and get it approved. So a BIG thank you to Graculus for his kind words and approval, hopefully this will encourage other geocachers how easy it is to get a cache approved as if a newbie like me can get it done
  5. @keystone many thanks, when you click submit etc it doesnt say if its been submitted (as you will see on my initial submission thats now submissions). Thats why i was a bit worried, but many thanks i can now patiently wait knowing its safely with yourselves for review @lil devil sorry i didnt know about the event ive only been here under two weeks.
  6. im lucky, my partner doesnt mind as it gets me out of the house and the dog gets a longer walk.
  7. Hi being new and paid my annual fee i have taken a look at pocket queries and even after reading about im still at a blank. Could someone explain in layman terms exactly what it is and how i would benefit from it? many thanks in advance.
  8. yes that box was ticked, i will try the email option.
  9. how do you email a reviewer? i submitted a cache for review last week... still waiting...
  10. you can download the geocache sites from the garmin site, this is what i did at the weekend.
  11. hi there ive been here about a week and have already found 24, sounds a great number till i tell you there are 4 that i couldnt find. it might be a case once you seen what different caches look like that you know what you are looking for. Have a look up on youtube for hiding geocaches and you will see why you might be missing them.
  12. Only been doing it a week and only one box was great (pookie's in south oxfordshire, uk), however there is one In Abingdon, UK that all there was in the box was an allen key and notepad. One done tonight had a royal mail keyring advertising its services, a geocacher offering his services in making ceocaching keyrings and a dozen or so cards from other geocachers (thought the logbook was the way to do that). Ive not done any swaps in days, but started off swapping some cheap tachy toy for some decent earphones for a well known brand that i have hoping by putting these into caches the next person might choose these and put something of equal value or more and put the quality up. Still waiting for my first cache to be given approval and now im wondering if i have gone over the top with 10 items + TB and good deal of money spent on it. If what ive read above and seen today is true then it saddens me that ive spent that sort of money on doing a cache that will probably end up with a few copper coins, a few pens and some bolts... great trade
  13. today i have found caches made of old squirty sauce bottles, which have been a pain to get the paper out to sign it to say we've been. Then i found a cache that had the following :pencil, bit of paper and an allen key...
  14. thank you, what a star you are now i can use it properly, have got a lead coming my way (now dont need it lol). what can i do to the device with the pc interface lead?
  15. hi there same boat as me, started with an iphone 3gs, althrough i have an emergency battery to charge it with me and the car charger in the car, i have invested in a second hand etrex h for all day missions and for slightly better accuracy (56 ft down to a couple of meters). Just need help getting the settings set up to get the most out of it, already have it set to WAAS as ive read its more accurate.
  16. I managed to get one second hand and have now realised i need a pc lead as there seems to be no way of entering in the co ordinates without one otherwise it seems to be a good device to run along side my iphone. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions for the settings on the device to make it better??? ive tried search but having problems with it. Many thanks in advance.
  17. when i was a kid, we used to play gold down the local playing field and once on the mud track down to the field start to whack the golf balls down, so maybe its kids. BTW never had to buy a golf ball, a visit to the local golf club 10 miles away and a walk around the perimeter used to yield a rucksack full of gold balls.
  18. being new to this, so far our ruck sack contains the following: a few swaps a keyring torch spare batteries iphone emergency charger battery bottle of water tissues + hand wipes doggy poo bags (as dog is usually with us). pen and if weather is unpredictable our rain macks. If its very local then i just wear my combats which holds my wallet, gps, iphone, a pen and some swaps.
  19. obviously you dont want people who would destroy the cache to know, but family friends that you trust tend to be quite interested, some may even want to come out and try the hobby with you. But those you feel who would ruin it or muggles you just say nowt about it to them.
  20. thanks again, ive looked at some of the geocaching links and whats in the stores, one even does the nik naks to go inside like keyring torches etc. Im sure by the weekend i will have the ideas and places in mind sorted and by the weekend after myself and my daughter will go out and place them. Did however get some camo bags for £1.50 plus 50p ish p&p
  21. im new too, so guess you not the only one Our first cache was last saturday GC1HBDX after finding it on the map we decided to take the dog for a walk who promptly jumped into the black canal as we walked along the canal i was doing a countdown (no muggles about) as we got down to 6-10ft i looked to the right and saw the dead sticks over the box and immediately thought that it was a strnage place for lots of old sticks to end up, removed them and found the cache. Both the partner and my daughter are now hooked. My daughters first find a few caches later and she was over the moon, we now have a set routine, i fill out the log and the little one looks through the cache and says what she sees and my partner keeps an eye out. Certainly a great new hobby that gets us out and about.
  22. many thanks, we have done 15 now only 4 of them were not found and of them four we knew one had been vandalized as the card was scattered down the nearby shaft (and yes reported promplty too). How do i make my own camo bag for 50p? i was going to buy some spray paint and spray each tupperware tub in green and black to camouflage it, but if its easy enough to make my own camo then im all ears!!!
  23. Hi all, after a great weekend geocaching, we as a family decided it be great to give something back and create some caches ourselves. I have read the rules on what isnt allowed in the boxes. however my questions are: 1. what sort of things do people start the box off with? (obviously notebook and pencil) 2. How many items? 3. How much do you spend per cache? 4. Where to get the geocaching stickers for it? 5. the geocaching card explaining it all, is it purchasable or is it a case of printing it off and finding a laminator? 5. and lastly where do you go to get the stuff for a cache? I have noticed quite a few caches have camo bags, surely thats expensive? many thanks in adavance.
  24. many thanks to the both of you... hopefully other newbies will see this and will give something back by creating their own cache.
  25. Hi all ive found on submitting a cache is that it takes up to 72 hours to be approved. After a great weekend we would like to make up a cache and submit it as a way of giving back to a great new hobby that has given us so much joy so far!! Many thanks in advance sms
