  1. i went caching in swindon yesterday, ended up calling it a day after a few hours as i got bored finding 35mm in bushes with rubbish and needles. there was two huge trees which could fit a lunchbox half way up but instead in the ivy was a wet 35mm, at a bridge a 35mm when an ammo box or similar size could have snuggly hid there. on way home we decided to do a multi and a puzzle and actually enjoyed the multi the most as it was well thought out, a large ammo can and a huge logbook inside not some damp stinky mouldy bit of paper. i think we all should look at ways of making the experience better. do we really need to place a 35mm, can a ammo can or lunchbox fit there. what would you prefer to find.

  2. i think the difference being fb forums post straight to your phone, where as a forum like this doesnt (unless ive missed a tool somewhere). also with more regional sites you tend to find out more things of use to you in your area not 100 miles away.

  3. My favourites:

Gc1aggd my first 5/5 cost us three trips a new mobile phone and a pair of walkie talkies along with close hyperthermia

Gc11km7 been back here a few times best abseiling/climbing cache

Gc2jpkz best and hardest cave along with the others close by.

Gc1c47m best boating cache as this was underground

Gc3k9xq probably the hardest 5/5 ever as its 5x5/5

Gc29m8v not as hard and as great as I thought but still enjoyed it.

Gc3j3pj as it was my 100th and the climb was good the puzzle nearly impossible.

    So narrowing them down

    The beast

    Hippos below

Again two different types here beast being very dangerous from white ice and hippos below because of the risk of drowning if it goes wrong.

I guess after thinking about it and this is very close hippos below wins but unless you go there you won't understand. But if you want the hardest ever to do physically try t5 challenge you won't be disappointed.

  4. Nope that's it for now, I hit the magic 100 now on 101 so done what I set to achieve and happy with the results, probably just save them for milestones and other occasions now, now need to look at grid filling or something else if I can find a nice challenge to do next.

I'll post up shortly my favourite ones as there is more than one. However on another thread I went through them last night and found half were rated correctly thirty percent more or less close and twenty percent lmfao are you having a laugh where was the d/t in that lol.

  6. Once up the pole thing you needed a fishing rod or long pole to hook off the cache, bring it down to you sign it and get it back up there. I'm sure dizzy pair can explain it better.

Right I've gone through my 5/5s today using gsak and found that 48 were correctly graded as a 5/5 35 were close to what I would call 5/5 and 18 were no where near a 5/5 rating.

You could play with the geocaching rating tool to work out what makes a 5/5 but my theory is difficulty is either the puzzle or how well it's hidden or how hard it's to reach. Also is there a chance of fatality if it goes wrong?

Terrain being would a normal joe bloggs get this cache easy if not why will he need specialist equipment or skills to abseil scuba dive and will the equipment he need generally be stuff you don't find in the average household garage eg ropes and climbing equipment. There is many 5/5s I would not have got if I didn't have specialist equipment.

Maybe ask Groundspeak for guidance ??

Splendidz where you off caching and I'll tell you if it's worth going to ;)

  7. i thought it was about 200ft or was i measuring it against the size of the fish i caught lol. i guess you did it in the middle of the night or very early morning? we turned up about 3pm on a saturday not the best time, thus me refusing to do it.

  8. not sure off hand its the one in ipswich outside pizza hut where you have to hook it off the top of a spire at the top of the signage pole thing. i wouldnt do it as i didnt fancy explaining to the police if they turned up lol.

  9. Without going through them individually and by going off the top of my head I would say the beast down red hill way the t5 tree top challenge and the 3 of the 5 cave ones near bath/Bristol. There was an underground river one up Gloucester way that you had to row for about half a mile underground and the only way to it would have been boat due to depth, yes they must be the ultimate 5/5s but there are some 4/5s that should be 5/5 s. others have been complete a task of 100 caches in a day or get a cache for 100 days which mentally and physically to get that part takes some going so would make it 5/5 however finding the cache would be a 1.5/1.5

I would say over the past month I've done 22 of which about a quarter were not 5/5s in my opinion but then the cache owner might be inexperienced and to them it felt like a 5/5

I think all cache ratings can be wrong. Some puzzles can be very easy for some and impossible to others.

  10. As a top 5/5 finder of 93 5/5s I have seen all manner of 5/5s from ones that you walk 20ft up a bank and one hanging from the roots of a tree on a shallow stream to proper caves, underground rivers and the more extreme t5 tree top challenge. Many of these involved specialist tools from boats to abseiling gear a few 5/5s I've given a miss as they require scuba gear or climbing 200ft up a pole on an industrial estate. Yes there should be ratings by the people who done them but what I tend to do is give favourites to the 5/5s that I've found fun or challenging and not the ones that involve a quick step up the bank.

  11. I would like to thank tony and lillian for all their hard work, getting caches replaced on the morning of the sand and sarnies event which again me and my family probably enjoyed the most (including the meeting with the dalek). Whenever i bump into these two wonderful people they have always made myself and my family welcome. New cachers, old cachers, doesnt matter who they are they both make people feel welcomed and with all their events you can tell lillian has had a touch as it has that lillian sparkle to it.

Again I would like to thank you both not only for all you have done, but for making us feel so welcome!!

  12. i got bitten a few months ago, luckily it didnt draw any blood and same thing no growling or defensive behaviour from the sheep dog. farmer carried on driving by. the people i was with said i should have said something and one of them would have challenged the farmer, but i felt as no blood had been drawn to leave it,kinda wished i had taken it further, but at the time i was more concerned on our parties dog than actually being bitten. hope it heals up ok.
