  1. I think the system that generates PQs is at capacity and gasping for air from Thursday to Saturday. I can get small queries to run ad hoc or within a reasonable amount of time. But I two queries one for home and one for the mountains and those seem to have issues with the system running them. I know they work... I setup both to run on Friday - one did not run (it ran on 10/1) and the other I futzed with, it ran w/ no results, I refutzed with it at 7pm Pacific and set it to run on Fridays and it never ran. I just built a run once and delete query (about fifteen minuts ago) and I'm still waiting.
  2. Select a day to run it and then check how you want it to run - these are at the top of the configuration page for each query. The my finds query can only run once a week. Days to Generate (Server time: Friday, October 03, 2008 9:07:16 PM) Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Choose how often your query should run: Uncheck the day of the week after the query runs Run this query every week on the days checked Run this query once then delete it
  3. You need to select any/all maps that you want at the same time. Not sure what GPS you have and routability. The newest versions of Topo and city navigator are both routable...
  4. you should contact Garmin and find out if this is a known issue. I gather you have the batteries well connected and they aren't the cause of the shut downs.
  5. That has worked for me. I archive the current track. erase the track and then setup the exercise profile.
  6. I bought the 400T for $400 a couple of months back. Retailers and manufacturers move prices around to drive the consumer. It's well known that retailers believe the consumer will not come through this shopping season. Garmin is offering rebates just like camera manufacturers do the same thing all the time.
  7. A little more detail to your question would be helpful. Might also want to move it to the technical forum.
  8. This is fairly simple to do when you are logging the find of the cache. At the bottom of the screen you should see an inventory of your "trackable" items. You can select (highlight) an item and it will automatically be included as a leave behind. Also remember not to list the trackable id number - what you would use to search, list, claim a trackable item on the page. That way someone can't claim a ghost find.
  9. You might consider looking at GSAK which is a great utility that manages the database of caches and can parse the content in various ways, generate and transfer to the PDA and/or GPS. For instance if you wanted to send a list to your GPS, you could then generate a PDF of the logs, hints, other information for hardcopy, or generate a txt file or other file to view on your PDA. One of the starup hints on GSAK states, "You can generate HTML files from the offline view (of the online cache pages). This generates an HTML and index file that can be downloaded to your PDA." Which might be useful for paperless caching. GSAK has a lot of other capabilities and is an excellent addition to your arsenal to make the most out of Geocaching.
  10. The 60Csx is the workhorse of Garmin and has been out for awhile. It's thought to have a better signal in heavy coverage. If you want to do a lot of backcountry, non-geocaching, the 60Csx is a great unit. However, if your predominantly into geocaching. The 400T is an awsome unit, new with a few bugs to still work out, and allows for full paperless caching - which you can't do on the 60Csx. It's a little larger format than the 60Csx too. I have the 400T and love it. I had a but unit and returned it and the second one has been fine. Your mileage may vary.
  11. If it isn't something family oriented then it shouldn't be there. But someone might really want a button or a sticker, so I don't see any harm, unless the item is profane, hateful, etc. I was thinking the same thing. I'm thinking here - if we're gonna say political or religious agendas are a no-no....are we going to ban the following things (things i HAVE found in caches): 1. toy soldiers - obvious support for war (at least some war) - blatantly anti-peace? 2. McDonalds happy meal toys - obvious support for the enslavement of animals - blatant violation of the rights of animals? 3. Mickey Mouse toys - blatant affront to Islam and to Allah - dont beleive me? - see http://www.metimes.com/Editorial/2008/09/2...a_too_far/7727/ Ok - i think I've made my point here...if yer gonna disallow something because of politcial or religious overtones - it better be really good.... The guidelines are against caches promoting agendas and not what is inside them.
  12. So the cache I asked about has been archived. But not until the cache owner deleted my find and made some comment about a double standard...Confederate Flag Caches in the South but he can't have a political hide and called me a fascist to boot. Strikes me as childish, but lesson learned. There are those that will be spiteful and seek retribution so should you come upon a hide that has no place in geocaching discuss it back channel with a regional cache master - not on the forum - or you just might get your find erased as I did. No biggie, I'll make it shortly and clearly the guy was a doofus. ;-) Happy caching folks!
  13. I think it is safe to say the base map on the Colorado and Oregon are the best that Garmin has ever put out. Combined with a 24k topo card or the driving card/software you can get routable directions. I drove to the park where a cache was located on my 400T with Topo 24k installed w/ turn by turn directions.
  14. I take it you can see the Colorado on the PC and are downloading .gpx files to the Colorado? If not then you have some USB/PC/Mac troubleshooting issues to deal with. Mapsource can see waypoints and tracks and points of interest. It doesn't really understand a geocache from a waypoint. You can transfer waypoints and what ever else is in your current file from within mapsource. You should have your colorado connected via USB and verify the PC can see it by making sure you can open up the Colorado drive. then from mapsource you can click transfer and select from device. It should automatically grab any tracks, waypoints and poi information from your colorado and/or error if it can't find it. I've pulled mine a couple of times. Make sure you have up to date versions of the software for the Colorado and Mapsource.
  15. Are either of you premium members? If so you can generate pocket queries that are .gpx files (as opposed to .loc files) and those can either be entered into a data management system like GSAK, or dowloaded into the Colorado via your PC. If you've successfully loaded them to the Colorado you will see a list of them when you select the geocache icon in shortcuts - they are sorted by distance from your current location...they will also show up on the map as icons and can be selected via the cursor and clicked to goto. Mapsource will only make waypoints - they won't have any detail. If you have a Colorado or Oregon you should avoid it unless you want to transfer waypoints. Check out the Garmin Colorado Wiki - http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/ As well as the information on GC.com. Hope that helps - I'm sure others will chip in w/ better information as well.
  16. Jim; Since I have Colorado 400T do I just skip #1 and load NW Trails? Or if I were to want to load NW Trails and HI, NM, CO, etc go ahead and do that all at once? How does NW Trails interact with the Topo 24K West map I have loaded on the SD Card? (CA/NV so might not work at all) P.S. I am in awe at the work the opensource and mico-payments community is doing w/ caching/gps/mapping. Thank you so much folks! Thanks -cjd Team Chinook 1. Load topo 2008 2. load NW trails - it goes into mapsource 3. select maps you want on your unit, along with NW trails 4. click transfer to unit 5. Go get a cup of coffee while the computer hums Doesn't sound hard or complicated. Oh, yes, the part about open source. You got to pay for topo 2008. And NW trails is constantly evolving. As folks send in data it is incorporated into the releases. If it was built into the maps you would have to wait for the next release of the topo map. I like it the way it is. Jim
  17. any chance this is from not holding down the on/off button firmly and for the requisite amount of time? I find that if I short the time I hold down the on/off button on the Colorado I'll get a false start...need to hold it for a minimum of 3 to 5 seconds.
  18. I've seen velcro used. I picked up a plate at the local hardware store and was going to epoxy it to the stone building...cept for the private property part.hmm.
  19. So I came across a hate cache today. Unfortunately it's probably acceptable because the hider hates George Bush and it's in the Bay Area and well that's the popular viewpoint for many a lib in the Bay. Not mine. The cache is called I hate Bush hides - so you wouldn't completely know it's a hateful hide until you get to the cache and it has pictures of George Bush XXXed out. My view is there's no place for that type of hide. I explained to my 8 year old daughter that there are people that don't like some of our Politicians, but for all of the different viewpoints out there we could possibly end up with nothing but attack caches from either side all day long. If I was emporer of Groundspeak I'd ban political statements and political hides - particularly "hate hides".
  20. Well I didn't say it was a "great" deal...and it does apply to "certain" map products.
  21. Why wouldn't one just build the trails into the map? When new trail data comes available then you build a new map? Isn't it much more complicated for the average Joe to get a base map and then layer trails on? It's clearly the antithisis of what your promoting, but the vast majority of us are newb's to map making and just want an opensource, or low cost, high res map to use. Maybe it's super easy, but it sounds like it requires more steps...I'd rather get a map w/ the trails built than having to figure out how to get a map and then go get trails and figure out how to layer that and then figure out how to get it onto my gps...
  22. Has anyone compiled a list of audio signals on the Colorado series? I don't recall seeing anything about that on the Wiki. I know there is a proximity alert approaching a cache proximity alert on a selected waypoint proximity alert nearing a turn (topo 24k) proximity alert at turn ? ? I turned the unit on and selected the satellite page and placed it in my West facing window and a couple of minutes later I heard an audio beep - not sure what it is signaling...
  23. wouldn't that be nice? Garmin doesn't have one there are some additional GPS sites that have forums, but they're not as active as this one. The 60Csx is just about the most popular Garmin for caching, so if you ask your questions in GPS and Techology they will likely get answered.
  24. you could put aerials on the unit as a jpg, but I don't think they would be that visible. I've found the auto route feature on the Colorado 400T w/ the 24k West Topo maps to be quite excellent. Per the most recent review of this map set, it has essentially the same capabilities as CityNav NT for the States that are covered - for me that is CA and NV. Nuvi can take a specialized output from GSAK that provides a lot of detail about the cache too. Check out GSAK board and macro section.
