Much of the wooded area between Butler and West Milford is Newark Watershed. You have to purchase a permit to hike on the property otherwise you could get kicked off or fined for trespassing.

There's a great trail at Shawangunk Ridge near New Paltz, New York on the grounds of the Mohonk Mountain House which is open to the public.
