  1. I plan to get the Audiovox VX6600. I have never really actually played around with it, but that is what the office is telling me I will be getting. A friend of mine from another state has one and he likes it more than my current phone (treo 600). I guess I will see how it works out. It sounds as if the software for the phone is not that expensive. I still need to figure out how to automaticly upload my logs to Geocaching.com!
  2. I really have no intelligent statement to add other than I was checking out this thread and realized that it had been viewed a total of 11,999 times. Must be hot! I was the 12,000th view!
  3. All, I am sorry....I posted this on another thread but did not get a responce because I was getting a little off the subject. When people say "paperless" is this the process they would go through? I am planning on purchasing a PDA phone and was wondering if this would be the proper procedure. Please see the last two questions. So... 1. I download the information from Geocaching.com to GSAK 2. I sort that information and download that in my GPS 3. I then transfer that same information to my phone (afer getting software for my phone) 4. I find a cache 5. I log the find on my phone while I am there 6. Will my log on my phone sync with GSAK when I sync it to my computer? 7. Will I have to still log my find on Geocaching.com?
  4. Hello all, I am traveling to Harlingen Texas in a few weeks for business. I plan to spend all day sunday geocaching. Any suggestions on caches that I should include on my list?

  6. I would not need to do that since I already invested in a Gamin 76cs, however, I would like to learn about downloading from GASK to my unit. I could see a HUGE benifit from not bring all the paper logs on my travels!
  7. I like that....an opportunistic cacher. I just updated my profile yesterday on Geocaching.com to say that I plan on trying to find at least one cache per state that I visit. Between now and the end of the year, I will have visited Kentucky, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Arizona and Connecticut.....I'm sure there will be a few others too. I only wish I was not sick when I went out to Colorado. The only problem I can see, is my caching with my suit and tie..... I posted a question the other day about my new cell phone that my office is getting me. It's an Audiovox VX6600 (I think its VX)...anyway, it's a PDA phone with some pretty good memory. Maybe I can download from GASK to my phone??
  8. If I were you.... I would start marketing to parks. Have them pass out fliers to incomming cusotmers or post on their websites. You can provide the units and you can both share in the profits from renting them. It's a win, win situation. Their customers learn a new and exciting sport and they don't have to lay down a bunch of money to see if they like it or not. The park gets increased traffic, and you profit. The problem I can see is your ROI (return on investment) In order for you to make any real money, you will have to sell this to A LOT of places. good luck
  9. It sounds as if I just need to take the time to set down for a few hours and play with it. I am (almost) a pro with Microsoft Excel, and I do understand databases. I am a premium member (I don't know why it does not show that next to my name) and I have already done a pocket Querie and downloaded 100 waypoints. Now I have 100 of my waypoints and some examples that came with the data base. I still can't figure out how to delete the examples that came with it! Anyway....I think I just need to play with it, it looks like (from all the different post) that this really is the best out there. Thank you!
  10. Hmmm I think it should have Pocket PC, I will investigate that. What type of software should I get with it?
  11. Ok, I can tell that a lot of people here use GASK and I have downloaded the free 21 day trial of this. Are there any other software programs that anyone else would like to suggest? I can honestly say that GASK seems a bit over my head. I really have not had enough time to dedicate to it (reading the help screens and such). I did manage to get about 100 caches loaded into my 76cs and that was pretty easy, but it seems like managing the information is hard.... Maybe it's just me....I am just a sales man! I have my IT department figure everything out for me. Anyway, before I will decide if this is what I will use I would like other suggestions. Suggestions? comments?
  12. I was on Gamin's web site looking at all there map options. I found one called "Roads & Recreation - U.S." Has anyone had any expeirence with this? This seems to have great detail! It does not show elevation (or so I think), but what the heck...I live in michigan and we don't change elevation much anyway!
  13. I keep hearing about people going "paperless" by using PDAs and such. I know this may be a dumb question, but can I use my phone to do this? I am getting (within 2 weeks) an audiovox XV6600 from work. Here is a link: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/c...tedPhoneId=1581 what other software would I need? Since I always carry my phone with me while Caching, I think this could be a good fit! Your thoughts?
  14. PhntmArcher, that map seems to be pretty detailed compared to my GPS I will check that out. I will not be using my GPS in my car (or for auto routing). I am lucky enough to have a navigation system built into the car, so that gets me around. Does that software replace my base map or just “add” to it?
  15. Hello everyone. I got so much help from my last post, I figured I would give this a try again. I have a Garmin 76cs. Whenever I go any sporting goods store I see the map software available that seems to get pretty detailed. I just wonder how much better it will get over my base map that comes with the 76cs. Are the pictures on the packages as good as the detail on the disk? I don't want to dish out money to just be upset about purchasing software that is not as good as what I got. A good expample of what I would be looking for: N 42° 43.792 W 083° 06.029, Stony Creek Cache (GC4819) I found this cache not to long ago. Even though this is a major park in my area, my map (on the 76cs) seems to show no detail of it (the large lake that is within the park, the roads that run though, ect) I want map software that will show me as much detail as possible. Something that will show small lakes and streams. Is this something that is out there and available or am I asking for to much? Please advise!
  16. Wow, I did not expect this many responses to my questions. Thank you very much! I have had several people say the same thing to me about my Vista “If you use it correctly you will never loose reception. You must have it level (face up).”….I guess the problem I have with that would be the type of Geocaching I love to do. I love hard terrain. The day I took my Vista out with my friend who had the Magellan, we were crossing rivers on logs, ducking through thickets and climbing some fairly steep river beds. It’s hard to keep your GPS perfectly horizontal all the time. (Just my opinion). I can’t believe the Magellan looses satellite reception and still calculates. I guess that would be why my friend always passes by an area and has to walk back…. And the verdict is…..I will stick with my 76cs. It sounds like a solid upgrade from the 60cs except for the size. I know it is bulky, but I think I can live with that. I imagine that someday (in the very near future) they will have GPSs so small that I will want to upgrade anyway. I’m certain they are working on powerful units that will make the 60 series look like a “brick”. Besides….now I can talk my wife into a boat! Thanks for all the responses. I will let everyone one know how it goes when I take it out!!
  17. OK….long story short: I bought an Etrex Vista a little over a month ago. I took it out for the first time with a friend and HATED every second of it. I lost satellites every time I got under the slightest of cover. His Magellan was working fine and my new gps kept failing. I did some additional research and decide to swap it for the Gamin 60cs (just a small upgrade, I told my wife…). When I got to the store, they gladly took the vista back, but were out of the 60cs’s. Since the electronic compass is very important to me, the gentleman talked me into the 76cs (as opposed to the 60c they had). Fast forward to today….I have not had a chance to get outside and use my new 76cs yet (sad, I know, but I have been traveling for work). I have read other post debating between the 76 series and the 60 series (size and memory seem to always come up) My question: I have about a one week window to take my 76cs back and exchange it for the 60cs that I was originally going to get. The store manager said that since I asked for the 60cs and they were out, he would allow me to do that. “However, I geocache myself, and I love my 76cs. I would never step in the woods with anything else since I upgraded to it.” [words quoted from the store manager] My biggest concern would be loosing satellites. Everyone says the 76 series was geared toward marine and not so much hiking. Has anyone had any experience between the two and how they compare under tree cover? Please advise 
  18. Wilkens, I just bought the etrex vista last week. Today I went out with a friend and kept loosing sat reception under tree cover.....hmmm.... I will be watching to see what people have to say about this.
