  1. More likely BaseCamp is trying to read maps from your unit to display on the Mac. If you have a bunch of third party maps on there it will do that. I tend to pull the MicroSD card out and put it in an SD Card adapter for loading Maps. Basecamp is a beast on Mac anyway, not my first choice for managing tracks and geocaches. You will want to remove the tracks from the device when you can as the eTrex can get a little stressed with a lot on it. I've had corrupted tracks occur when I do that for too long. Remember the speed of the device has more to do with battery life than it does with quality control. This is a unit that is meant for longetivity - as in people like me take it on a week long camping trip with four AA batteries instead of 16 AA batteries. That sort of thing matters on a 3.5 km portage over a mountain. There are times I would love to have the beautiful screen of the Oregon 650 but I love that I can navigate for three days on a single set of AA batteries (6-8 hours of paddling a day). This is physics - by putting a lower resolution display and slower CPU in there less energy is used overall and thus less energy needs to be provided. My Early 2014 MacBook Pro Retina i7/2.3 has no problems talking to the device. My Early 2011 MBP is also fine with it under Mac OS Yosemite. Technically, the eTrex is using USB 1.1 not 1.0 as well. What NO said. I love my Legend for in compactness and long battery life. I can navigate as well as with any other unit I have owned. It scares me that one day it will break and I will need to replace it.
  2. I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. Have downloaded base camp and unlocked my previous maps City Nav to it. When I attach my Vista HCX to the computer it recognize it and I am able to transfer waypoints back and forth. However it will not let me load any maps onto the device. When I click send to device I get the block where I can send maps by when I select that it does not let me send anything. Plus I can find a way to choose what maps I want to send.
  3. I saw once before a link to a forum that discusses auto GPS. Anyone have the link.
  4. What is currently the best Garmin Unit screen in sunlight. I have very old and tired eyes and need all the help I can get. Want to make this a consideration in my next purchase.
  5. That worked. Thanks. One other thing do you all like the GPS set at North Up or Track Up.
  6. I had the same problem with my MAC. Once I downloaded the communicator Plugin all went well. It was frustrating for awhile
  7. Thanks. I'll give that a try. It's been so long since I used this unit. For some reason I thouight I could just updat an existing waypoint to the new coordinates and save it along with changing the waypoint name.
  8. Can someone please tell me how to enter a waypoint into a VISTA HCX. I tried to modify another waypoint with new UTM coordinates but it never seems to save it.
  9. This never seems to get easy. For as long and Garmin has been around you would think there would be an easier way. I tried to load my old Trips Manager on my new MAC today and found out it was not compatable. Guess it's Base Camp.
  10. Looks like Map manager is needed to install th maps to my GPS Unit od SD card. I want to get the maps into Base camp. Is MMneeded for that finction also?
  11. I recently bought a Mac Book Pro. I downloaded Garmin Base Camp then went to GPS File Depot to download a free Topo of Colorado. Looked like all went well but no map showed up in Base camp. Any suggestions. Really thinking of returning the CPU and going back to a PC.
  12. I rode with a guy that has 4800 miles on his ATV using a Garmin 550 or 500 with no ill effects.
  13. Not sure that the Montana is a good choice for ATV riding. Garmin is pushing the Zumo line for that. Right now I have a Vista HCX. The screen on it is just so small that my older eyes are having a hards time seeing the details. No way I can use it on a ride. quote name='Styk' timestamp='1343930011' post='5090963'] Don\t know about the sat, google or custom maps but i suspect not. I have had one for 4 yrs, tomorrow I'm trading it for a legend HCx, while not paperless, i think it has better sensitivity then the nuvi 550 But I will tell you this, it sucks for ATVing, that's why I went with it, I was looking for a bigger screen for the ATV. but it's biggest flaw is the inability to load tracks. You have to convert tracks to routes and then load the routes. Routes can have a maximum of 200 points so the tracks must be small else then accuracy will be severely compromise, not something you want off road. plus the route info will be constantly tell you you off the road. very very annoying. bottom line if you want a great all around unit with a large screen, go for the Montana, it's features and abilities blow the nuvi out of the water. Just compare teh two units and you will see that the Nuvi is a poor investment. Benefits of the Montana versus the Nuvi 550 - larger screen 4" - accepts tracks (200 with up to 10,000 points0 - accepts custom maps - holds 12,000 geocaches - battery options include bith a lithum ion pack or 3 AA cells - 3D compass - option to have model with 5M camera - customizable screens - wireless transfer of waypoints, tracks and geocaches with other supporting models (oregon, dakota, new etrex 30, gpsmap 62 and 78 series but bottom line, it is a really poor unit for atving!!
  14. Anyone have the answer to being able to download SAT Maps this unit. I suspect I wouild donwload the maps to a SD card and it would work.
  15. Great feedback. Thanks a bunch. If only this unit supported Birdseye. It there a way to download a Sat or Google map to the 550.
  16. I am looking for something to use off road on my Bike and ATV as well as double duty for on road navigation. The NUVI 550- while an older moodel really seems to hit the mark for what I do. It really looks like a good deal at todays prices of around $250.00. It says I can add maps with the mico SD card which would work well when I go off road in out of state areas. Lookig for thoughts and pros and cons.
  17. If I have waypoints logged in my Etrex Legend and 62s in Lat/LON and I chance the settings in the unit to UTM will they convert themselves.
  18. Thanks for all the info. very informative. The inReach is very interesting and I plan on doing a little research on them.
  19. [Guess I needed to be a little more clear when I said navigation. I meant navigation off road while on the trail. That being said I do want my handheld unit to be able to give turn by turn directions on the road if needed. I do a lot of travel out west on bivy backpacking in areas that I have not been in. The little screens don't give much on a look in Topos even at 1:24 size. In areas with no cell coverage I wanted to be able to use sat photo's to help orient myself better.
  20. I got a good chuckle out of that. Thanks. I for one would like to see the UTM conversion.
  21. Not sure why the Montana would be my oly option. I used the 60csx and Etrex Legend and they wroked fine but I want something to show overhead pictures to improve my association to where I am at on the map. From whjat I read the 62 can do this. I am not as concerned with size. I dropped down from the 60 to etrax thinking size mattered. It really didn't in this case (maybe others) and I now finding I want more that what the legend can give me.
  22. So I am lookig for a new GPS to be mainly used for hiking and my primary navigation device. I really want the capability to have overhead maps like on my smart phone. A considerable amount of the areas I travel to out west have no cell phone coverage. I have always had a Garmin and would prefer to stay with the brands since I am familar with the unit navigation. Should I be looking at the 62 or Montana.
  23. May I'll just update the Maps on my Garmin 760 for the car and look at the Montana.
