I would do light geo caching, and driving navigation with it..(GPS V)

yes you can change the level on the GPS V. The book explains how.

I had this same problem last weekend with my streetpilot III, I never had it happen before and I'm trying different software loads before sending it back to garmin. (They told me to send it in.)

Just about the same as yours reverted to version 2.28, ran the same tests, and the clocks (and everything else) worked correctly.

Just talk to Garmin about this latest beta version and beta means it's in testing and you use it at your own risk. If you are having problems with it contact them so they can get the bugs out.
