  1. Chiming in from Coos Bay, OR (with ties to the Okanogan Valley). Just responding to the question in general terms. Personally, I enjoy finding caches that haven't been found for awhile. I intentionally picked a local cache that didn't get much activity for my 100th. It hadn't been found in over a year and it was a nice hike off on a less travelled path. If the only reason for thinking about archiving a cache is that it doesn't get much activity then I say just leave it as long as you're willing and able to maintain it. This addiction of ours is growing by leaps and bounds and there are always new cachers coming into areas - someone will always want to go for this kind of cache. On the other hand, I've thought about a couple of mine that haven't had much activity in the last year and wondered if I ought to just archive them and put them out in places where more people will go. BUT, have decided against it for all the reasons above. They are in interesting places and finders always enjoyed the hunt so that's enough for me - even if it's only a few people a year. BTW - my ties to Okanogan Valley - lived in Tonasket 73-78, brother lives up near Chesaw Might get up your way this summer - will ask for "must do's" when the time comes. Merry Christmas all and Happy Caching Edited to add: Just looked at your profile and in your own words..... I started geocaching on September 28, 2002. My brother (Mountainhome) introduced me to this game. I enjoy the hunt, but what I really enjoy most about geocaching is that it brings me to new areas and points of interest I may not have seen otherwise. A great cache in my opinion is not the container or its contents, but its setting, such as at a mountain top viewpoint of the Cascades, or at a Firewatch Lookout Tower, or a natural geological wonder, or a historical artifact such as an abandoned railway tunnel.
  2. Most folks get this product. In addition, you will want to update the MapSource program which came on your disc.
  3. Just started using with Motorola Razr V3 Silver on Edge Wireless (Cingular) on the Oregon Coast. No problems.
  4. Are you sure you have the very latest beta build? While in GE, Check for Updates Online - does it tell you that you have the latest? If not, you should be prompted to download the latest version and it should be 4.02.2416. This worked for me - got the ability to import GPX files back! However, I'm not a PLUS subscriber. OK, I'm confused. I currently have Google Earth Plus 4.0.2416, and I'm still having problems displaying GPX files (the same problems gruntmo is reporting). popop, is the lastest and greatest version that you're using 4.0.2416 or 4.02.2416? You've mentioned both version numbers in previous messages. Thanks, --Larry 4.0.2416 was what I meant to write - must have been in a hurry. But I just checked my version of GE and it is 4.0.2693 as mcrt noted. Not sure how that happened - could have sworn when I clicked on "Check for updates online" it gave me 4.0.2416. Regardless, the ability to import gpx files has returned.

  6. The November 1, 2006 beta wasn't allowing gpx import as noted by others above, including Robert Lipe. This was apparently an issue with Windows users only, not Mac users. The above referenced announcement on the Google Earth Community Forum specifically notes " - Numerous GPS fixes (including GPX import)".
  7. The latest GSAK 6.6.5 patch now includes GPSBabel 1.3.2 Grabbed the patch (thanks, Clyde) and tried exporting a GSAK database to GPX format and dropping into Google Earth 3.0 - only got the single standard GE icon. Then re-read geonerds post - I see I need to convert the GPX to KML. Not real sure where to do that, in GSAK, that is. Tried the custom export and the default command line looks to convert to KML but when I dropped the resulting KML file into GE 3.0 it gave me the little white box w/ flag icon instead of the gc.com icons. What am I missing? Do I have to convert the GPX in native GPSBabel? Never mind - today I upgraded GE to a brand new beta (check for updates - should get version 4.0.2416) that fixed the GPX import issue and when I loaded my first GPX file - bingo - gc.com icons as advertised. Pretty nice.
  8. Problem Fixed apparently. This today from Google Earth Community Forum: Updated Google Earth installers are available from http://earth.google.com/ Release notes: - Progress indicator for loading network links and models - Real-time GPS tracking using NMEA (Plus, Pro and EC) - Greatly improved performance for collada models (textured buildings) - Tours can display balloons (Tools->Options... then "Touring" tab) - Driving directions and touring allow a greater range for typed values - Mac movie-maker supports many more compression formats KML notes: - Icon palettes are deprecated (no more root:// for the styles) - Improved performance on network link hierarchies Major fixes since last beta: - Improved compatibility on shared memory architecture ATI graphics cards with older graphics card drivers - Improved success rate of log in over unreliable connections - Fixed offline mode in Pro - Numerous GPS fixes (including GPX import) That very last bullet item is what I've been waiting for! Version 4.02.2416 Finally! Allows import of GPX file!
  9. There is an issue however with this recent build - unable to load .gpx/.loc files See this discussion - http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=147760 Hopefully, they will get that fixed soon! Same issue with me these past two weeks, regarding the "My Finds" PQ. Last weeks didn't come but that was in the middle of the gc.com server issues so I just shrugged it off and waited for this weeks. Asked for My Finds again today and nothing so far. My email is Charter. I doubt it's ISP or spam filtering because my regular PQ's showed up a few days ago just like normal.

  12. That's a very appealing upgrade. The latest version of GSAK (6.6.4) uses GPSBabel (1.3.1). Hopefully, Clyde has a GSAK upgrade just around the corner with this newest version of GPSBabel. Also need to remember to use GE 3.0 for GPX import to work. The early Nov. upgrade of GE seems to be missing the ability to import GPX files, except for Mac users apparently. Wish they'd get that resolved.

  14. Glad to see the geocache icons back but it doesn't seem to be loading my gpx files. Well, it creates a folder in Temporary Places alright but no waypoints! The timeline bar also seems to be missing - was a pain to always set the timeline bar to the current date to get all waypoints to show up. Anyone else seeing the issue with gpx downloads? You don't fit a person for glasses until the nose job is done. (edited for clarification) ... except if the person can't see enough that they keep bumping into things. (stretching it a bit far ) BUt as you say it does seem that the very latest version have made it a non issue (there is another issue that the blue 'humbug' icon, but that is to be fixed - although again there is a workaround. ) - also note, that this update is as yet only available at the website, 'Check For Updates' wont pick it up yet.
  15. Just went through the setup on my 60C - worked as described, thanks a great deal to VERY well written instructions. Very nice to have these symbols on the GPSr screen. Saves me looking at the PDA one time anyway. I take it that the 60C does NOT have the ability to load custom poi's then? Hmmmm, the justification for buying an new X model is growing! Thanks for the great procedural write-up
  16. Anyone else experiencing this? Since upgrading to the GE 4 beta I've not been able to retain gpx files dropped into the My Places folder as before. The next time I start GE everything is gone! Edited for new info - Ok I think what happened was the failure of GE to load the myplaces.kml (Occasionally I get that error message when starting GE).
  17. Bingo. Thanks a bunch. I never even knew what Time Sliders were til you mentioned them. Much appreciated, MrW. Unfortunately there is no option to turn the feature off - at least I can't see it. To get them all to show up at once I have to drag the slider all the way to the right. I could see some interesting uses for the geocacher like if you're looking for older caches. Most of the time, however, I would rather the time slider not even be there. I also find it irritating that you have to go through two iterations of selecting properties to change the waypoint icon to your choice. When gpx files are imported they automatically load with the little white square with a flag. When you select a different icon they only change to the pushpin icon. So you have to select properties one more time to get the icon you really wanted. What's up with that?
  18. I just picked up a this Travel Bug from a cache on the Oregon Coast. Only the tag itself survived a Florida fire and now travels from forest to forest (as per it's stated goal) attached to a message about our individual responsibility for preventing forest fires. As a career forester and manager of public forest land I'm glad they didn't just archive their TB but changed it's purpose for a nobler cause.
  19. Actually there is a new one out near the beach at the New Carissa wreckage - New Carissa Flight Control. I live locally and will email you directly with a list of what I think you're after.
  20. Echoing 5winters question. Would like to be able to alter GE's list of turn points - delete or move them.
  21. Ditto - I'm keeping January's until something just as appealing comes along.
  22. Of course... I explained that one to you here a week and a half ago. That's a design thing, not a bug to be eventually fixed. I must apologize for the "tone" of the statement above. Didn't mean to express frustration with having to find and delete the old files. I was merely showing the flow of steps I took in the process.
  23. Launch the PPC File Explorer and go into "\windows\start menu". You'll probably find the old shortcut there. Scott That did it - thanks. Then I reset the new version exe file to show up in the TODAY list.
  24. Enjoy! Installed the 1.0.3 and yes, noticable increase of import speed of gpx files. Great app thanks BTW, decided to load the new app on the storage card and the install wizard notified me that it would delete the old version first. Well, I still had to go to File Explorer and physically deleted some files/folders from the Program Folder. The only thing I haven't figured out how to do is to remove the shortcut to the exe file from the drop down list under START. I know it wants to run the app that was in program memory. It's not a big deal because another CM icon shows up in the "latest apps" portion of the Start drop down list and that one opens the new version loaded on the storage card. But it would be nice to remove the old one. Edited for clarification: Running WM 5.0 on a new Ipaq rx1955
  25. RE: running the application on an SD card I'm thinking of running the application from my 1.0GB SD card on my Ipaq rx1955. I've read of others having issues with how slowly it runs in this configuration. I'm thinking that since my pda had WM 5.0 that might not be quite the concern. IF I were try this - do I just go to File Explorer and copy over the main folder to the SD card? No other files to transfer? Can anyone confirm tolerable application speed with WM 5.0 and running CM totally on an SD card?
