  1. i really appreciate your website. thanks for such an innovative way to pass along geocaching related info and topical discussion. regards archie
  2. hello friends and neighbors, i just decided to join the national map corps as a USGS volunteer. what i would like to know is if any other geocachers have joined this program. and their opinions of it. i would also like to know to what extent is geocaching.com involved with this volunteer program. regards archie
  3. i use a palm IIIxe. i found one on ebay for 29.95 postage included. i purchased the 4.1 os upgrade for 8.00. the 29.95 palm IIIxe was os 3.5. but was easily upgraded for 4.1. the guy had 35 left and his id is satellite recievers. i now own 3 palm IIIxe's...one just for internet, one for arts and entertainment, and one strictly for geocaching. regards archie
  4. i have the radio shack charger for the little zip zap cars. i purchased two units, each had 8 AAA NiMH batteries. each unit cost 24.95. i also have 2 of the energizer 2500 MaH with 8 AA for my T7100 GMRS/FRS radios. the rechargables that came with the T7100 last about 10 hours. those 2500 MaH NiMH last 28 hours on regular use. however, on scanning mode, the batteries last just over 18 hours. a note on nickel metal hydride rechargables, they come to full capacity after four depletions and four recharges. the energizer recharger i got from walmart will fully charge batteries after 8.5 hours and turns itself off. i use the AAA's in my pda's and their modems, its been a little over 2 weeks since i changed them out and im just now showing a slight depletion. the radio shack set for 24.95 is a much better deal than just paying for the batteries by themselves. 4 AAA NiMH are 19.95. i got 8 AAA NiMH and a charger for 24.95. the charger can do either fast charge or trickle charge. it detects when the AAA's are charged and goes out of fast charge(an hour or less) to trickle. regards archie
  5. my definition of a crappy location is having to reach up into the rectum of a statue of a team mascot on a university campus to grab the cache hidden there regards archie
  6. myself and lostfool have traveled 145 miles to score some finds. regards archie
  7. what the hell is angst anyway?????? regards archie
  8. okay, ill keep it simple on this topic.........i personally do not define any cache or its location as "lame" or "silly". as a geocaching person, all i need to be concerned with is FINDING the cache without regard to its placement or its location. just my opinion folks........ regards archie
  9. okay heres my top ten: 1.) my geocaching compadre, lostfool. 2.)extra batteries 3.) silva ranger compass 4.)GPSr 5.) PDA (which has all of my medical info and contact info in case of an emergency) 6.) hikers stove and denatured alcohol 7.) instant coffee 8.) canteen of water 9.) patrol level first aid kit 10.)headlamp and flashlights, lighters, and matches. in my butt pack is this stuff plus, emergency blanket, insulatebag, poncho, and gmrs radio. on that note i also carry raisins or grapes, and icebreakers mints(to conserve water and keep my mouth and throat from becoming dry) i use the hands free vox headphone/mic on my gmrs/frs radio. if were going to be out for an extended period of time myself and lostfool have everything necessary for field cooking, making coffee, personal hygiene, and SURVIVAL. we keep that stuff at base point. if you are using a PDA a good car charger is higly recommended.i use NiMH batteries in my PDA's, and if need be, charge it in between caches. ABOVE ALL ELSE, ALL NEW CACHERS ESPECIALLY, NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR NEED FOR HYDRATION IN THE FIELD...WATER IS THE BEST THING TO CARRY!!! regards archie
  10. i am not a certified emt, however, i am a military trained radiological survey team medic. i take everything from absorbable hemostats to zinc oxide in my field kit. i also take water purification tabs in it as well. my personal kit has a cuple of sets of hemos and an assortment of medical items as well. i also carry snake bite kits and betadine. rest assured im confident that i can help someone in the field to the best of my abilities.(especially myself since i have the dreaded clutzitis disease that affects my perspective of gravity. ) regards archie

  15. welllll lets see...i am an evil, mean, socially unacceptable, reclusive individual. the reason i am such as this is becuase i geocache. i can think of a myriad of things more sinister than being a geocacher. take for example an ill informed, self righteous, pompous, shortsighted, multiple big mac eatting reporter such as mr donnely. in other words all i have to say is CACHE ON!!!!!!! regatds archie
  16. the 2nd annual meet and greet was my first geocaching event. i had a great time and met some great people there. i want to take this time to thank wcnut and tater for the great job they did putting this event together. while there i met a few folks and spoke with them. i met arf, wcnut, tater, lumberjack tom and a few others. it was a pretty good sized crowd there at the golden corral. a few people intoduced themselves and told of their cache counts. it amazed me me that people had 2000 plus finds under their belts. at the meet and greet they had door prizes, i won a nice mini mag lite and lost fool won some geocaching stickers hes been wanting for a while. i also signed a miniature log from what i now know as the smallest micro i had ever seen. this lady walks up and says do you see a micro i said oh you mean your earrings( i apologize for not remembering her name). after the munchies, intros, and door prizes we all headed out for some event caches. once again i was amazed how orderly everybody left and went caching. no traffic tie ups or anything. the most fun was trying to quickly re hide a cache we just found as other cachers were pulling in and then trying to non challantly walk away from the cache. in conclusion, if you get the chance to go to a caching event go for it. i can honestly say a good time can be had by all. regards archie
  17. okay folks, im getting confused, and i really shouldnt be. as i have read numerous posts in the forums concerning the negative press i have read concerning our sport, i am surely and sorely confused even more. i have read posts detailing the imaginations of those who wish to ban geocaching. as a result i have a few questions. 1.)do we not pay federal taxes, of which, a certain percentage goes to the care and maintenance of federal and state parks? 2.) do we not pay taxes on the purchase of our GPSr and other equipment deemed necessary for geocaching? it seems imbicilic for anyone or anything to ban geocaching. further, the logic is apparently pay for the product but do not use it(i.e federal parks etc. by taxation). i would go so far to say that this a form of taxation without representation. taxes we pay and parks we cant use. i agree entirely with one post i read where the individual posted as longs as the law isnt being broken leave geocaching alone. unfortunately, the short sightedness of certain government agencies will once again attempt to control our lives even more. above all else some entities have targeted geocaching. once again it appears the logic is dont get excercise dont go out in the parks a walk off that thanksgiving dinner et cetera. i have seen a lot of fat politicians who would benefit greatly by wandering around in the woods and looking for a few microcaches. in conclusion, whatever happened to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.better still, what is to become of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, let alone certain unalienable rights. regards archie
  18. so whats wrong with dumpster diving...that cobra GPSr i found was in a dumpster...i left it and took the coffee table. which is in my living room right now
  19. hmmmm...let us see...a lunatic is an individual who doubles his efforts while at the same time loosing sight of his goal....sounds like a serious DNF obsession. or perhaps its a fruedian kinda self torture thing.....yep, i now know im not quite right in the head. im still obsessing over the patch reef beach cache as well. just on that alone makes me insane...i really need help!
  20. my wife thoroughly encourages me to go out with lostfool geocaching......funny thing.....she has never objected at all for me to get out and do something
  21. i was regular army. my mos was 15D20 as primary mos and 15J20 as secondary. a 15D20 is an E-5 in the lance missile system, which has be decommissioned since 1999. as a 15J20 i was in FDC fire direction control. i went in directly after highschool in 1981 ans was in for 6 years, until 1987. at age 19 i was working nuetron bombs. i was a nuclear weapons and ordinance specialist. i was assigned to the radiological survey team and eventually assigned as armyd nuclear responce team. once it was determined that it was no longer necessary to have army units being nuke capable( no more pershing or lance) that was the end of my career. i was stationed at fort sill oklahoma and fiori kaserne in aschaffenburg west germany. at fort sill i was in C Btry 1st Bn 12th FA. in Germany i was in B Btry 1st Bn 80th FA. i was trained as rto/medic while on radiological survey team. NRT is pretty much self explanatory. army delta is also pretty much self explanatory. regards archie ps my handle, archeangelsk2002 comes from military related issues. this place was a target in days of old(one of many)(use russian spelling to check it out)
  22. i use a military issue but pack and lbe. the fanny pack i was using had a habit of slowly sliding downward, even though i tightened it up. the problem with that was the fanny pack would also cause my pants to slowly slide downwards. on at least 2 occassions i was in an unusually embarrassing posture to compensate for the lack of proper fit regards archie
  23. i got my palmlllxe over a month ago. to date i have 2459 cache pages and still have 3 mb of 8 remaining. i have also downloaded to the palm several applications from www.palmgear.com. one of the main applications i downloaded was the first responder first aid app. for programming purpose such as cachemate, its absoultely great. very easy to use and very easy to program from the palm desktop. you really do not have to spend a lot of money. mine cost me 64.00 total with express delivery. in my opinion, i got a really good deal. i also purchased the gladiator II hard case and a lighted stylus. all in all paperless caching has cost me just under 115.00 for equipmenr, registration for cachemate, and registration for gsak. id much rather use the palm in the field as opposed to a high dollar pda. mainly, i feel this way becuase if i loose a 64.00 palm pilot i can live with that. but i wouldnt dare take a high dollar pda to the field. you just never know what could happen. regards archie cgriffin101@yahoo.com
  24. i use cachemate and gsak. both were readily compatible with my palm lllxe. on that palm i have 2500 .gpx cachepages. the way i did it was to become a premium member, download all the .gpx files to my hard drive. then i made a folder and copied all of the .gpx files into the new folder. once the folder was created, i used the open file tab on gsak and searched for the new folder and afetr finding it downloaded the whole thing to gsak. gsak can send out.gpx to the pda by converting them to .pdb files with cachemate. you directly export the .gpx to cachemate from the gsak tab that looks like a globe. all databases are backed up on gsak itself, and all.gpx files are backed up as well. the hard part was downloading all of the 124 pages of .gpx files. i didnt know at the time how to download those files en masse, and actually i still dont know. all i do know is it took me every bit of 10 hours to download 2500 .gpx files. to get them on my pda. the pda process of this only took 35 seconds to download complete cache pages. regards archie
  25. my handle is archeangelsk2002 archeangelsk is a military related place i was at in the days of my military life. archeangelsk was the name of the place in russian it also relates to the fulda gap and shape belgium regards archie
